I had the opportunity to watch Clash of the Titans in 3D last Friday at Silver City Polo Park.

With it being Good Friday and the movie theatre pretty much the only thing open – mix in the fact that the movie was just released the day before, it was expected to be a very busy day at the theatre.

We arrived at 8:30pm, 2 hours before the 10:30 showing. The scrolling marquee above the box office already stated that the 10:30 show only had ‘few’ tickets left. There were only 4 showings for the 3D version of Clash of the Titans that day and 10:30 was the last one. Luckily, we were in the Polo Park area earlier that afternoon and had pre-purchased our tickets.

2-hours early is often too early to show up for a movie… but we were shocked to discover that 2-hours was a bit late for this one. There was already a line up of about 75 people before us.

Hit the jump for my impressions of the actual movie… no spoilers… promise.

This movie had Avatar written all over it. First the big push of a 3D masterpiece, and Sam Worthington playing the lead role. Though I found the movie really good – it was no where a 3D masterpiece Avatar was.

When watching Avatar, I found my self doing ‘ooo’s and ‘aaa’s at every spectacle they offered. Clash of the Titans had this potential but failed to deliver. There were often amazing landscape scenery that was delivered in a dull 2D fashion. Waterfalls, skylines, clouds, sunrises were all often delivered with little to no 3D effects. Water splashing during water based battle scenes weren’t even in 3D. A few visual effect fight scenes also lacked in CGI and some actor motions seemed very computerized. I’m not sure why it was done this way, but I believe it has a lot to do with the success of Avatar and the need to rush production and get this movie out there to feed off Avatar’s success at the box office. So far, it looks like it worked.

While the movie lacked 3D, it made up for it with a great story line and action scenes that will satisfy all action movie buffs. I’m a sucker for Greek Mythology and this movie had an amazing portrayal of it. We all know how crazy and complex Greek Mythology can get but the movie gives you a perfect dose without causing any confusion. You don’t have to be a Greek Mythology major to know who popular characters like Zeus, Poseidon and Hades are.

A few months ago I urged everyone to watch Avatar in 3D and to not even bother with 2D. With Clash of the Titans it is a completely different story. If you don’t want to pay the extra $3 for a 3D movie at the theatre, watch it in 2D – you won’t be missing much.

PROS:
– Great story line
– Great action sequences
– Movie moves forward well – no dull scenes
Io is HOT

CONS:
– Not enough 3D
– Visual Effects a bit rushed
– Final battle scene a bit short
