Nygard Plant Closed Originally uploaded by AccessWinnipeg

A shortage of fabric is to blame for the Nygard plant closing down after 35 years. Many mills in the USA and Canada have stopped producing fabric because it “simply isn’t profitable anymore”. 250 people are expected to be out of work.

The 250 – 260 employees at the 1340 Notre Dame Ave. location have already been given their layoff notices. A profit analysis had put them into an approximate $200,000 loss a month if they remained open. This isn’t the first time a Nygard facility has shut down. Nygard had shuffled employees in the past when they shut down the Church Ave. facility, but this wasn’t an option this time.
