Air Canada to Cut 2,000 Jobs

Air Canada has announced that they will be cutting up to 2,000 jobs due to rising fuel costs.

The cut was justified due to a 7% decrease in flying time for the airline’s fall and winter schedule. Less flying time means less employees needed. But airlines President Montie Brewer says the cuts are necessary to stay profitable. Every dollar rise in the price of oil per barrel results in a $26-million increase in their annual fuel bill.

Air Canada has also announced the cancellation of their Vancouver-Osaka, Japan flight – which I took on my way to Japan earlier this year.
