Louis Riel Poems Auctioned for $31,050

Louis Riel Originally uploaded by Sighthound

Original copies of four poems written by Louis Riel himself sold for $31,050 at an auction in Toronto.

The four poems were hand written while he was behind bars just before he was hung for treason. The bidding started at $4,500 and ended at $27,000 plus a buyer’s premium.

These poems are very rare and have only been seen by a selected few. They were all hand written by Louis Riel and given to Northwest Mounted Police Const. Robert Hobbs who guarded his cell while he was on death row in a Regina prison. Hobbs would give Riel paper to write on to pass time, in return, Riel gave him these four poems.

It’s amazing how a piece of Manitoba history can go so far!
