The Winnipeg Free Presses continually publishes a list of people looking for volunteers. It’s always easier to give money, but it’s what is really appreciated is people’s time.

Here’s a short list of volunteer opportunities. For a complete list check out the Free Press’ list:

Winnipeg Harvest needs the following volunteers: order fillers – to process orders for clients, duties include some heavy lifting; drivers – to drive a cube van, cargo van or a five-ton truck, to pick up and deliver food to various agencies; reception, referrals and special events – for administrative tasks, taking telephone calls, special events vary throughout the year. Oakview Place – Extendicare, a personal care home in St. James, needs the following volunteers: bowling assistants – Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. for about one hour; ring toss assistants Monday evenings, 6:30 p.m.; outing assistants once a month during the day to help residents visit museums, casinos, shopping malls, etc. Call Christa or Laura, 888-3005 ext. 254 or lchochinov@extendicare.com.

Parkview Place, on Edmonton Street requires the following volunteers: friendly visitor – to visit, converse, play cards, etc. with seniors; breakfast assistants to help cook and serve breakfast on Wednesday mornings to a small group of residents; pet visitations – bring animals to visit with residents; tuck shop attendant to sell items to residents; special events assistants to help residents to parties, serve refreshments, etc. Call Damien, 942-5291.
