2009 Free Press Short Fiction Contest

Sharpen your pencils or open your favorite word processor, the 2009 Free Press Short Fiction Contest is here.

I’m a huge fan of fiction, especially when it’s not commercial and comes from the pens of everyday people and not your typical writer.

There are 3 divisions of ages in the contest. First is for Junior which is Grades 7 & 8, then Senior Student which is Senior 1 thru 4 (grades 9 to 12 for those who graduated a long time ago) and finally Adult which is 18 and older.

The deadline for the contest is April 7, 2009.

The Rules are as follows:

  • You must submit 3 copies of each story, typed, one-sided, double-spaced, individually stapled, on 8.5 X 11 paper.
  • Stories must be original, unpublished works of fiction between 800 and 1000 words for the junior student and between 1000 and 1500 words for senior and adult.
  • Author’s name should NOT appear on the manuscript.
  • Entry forms are available from the Writers’ Collective by calling (204)786-9468 or email writerscollective@uwinnipeg.ca. To obtain the form online visit thewriterscollective.wordpress.com.
  • Each entry must come with a $10 entry fee of $5 for Writers’ Collective members, payable to The Writers’ Collective.
  • Only one price awarded per person.

FYI, works of fiction need not be entirely imaginary and may include real people, places, and events.
