Here’s an amazing throwback photo of Winnipeg’s Drive In theatre located on Portage Ave. The theatre entertained Winnipeg movie-goers for more than 40 years and was ran by Cineplex Odeon.

The Odeon opened in 1964. In 2005, more than 11,000 people signed an online petition in support of the theatre, but it wasn’t enough. The theatre was forced to close in 2008. It was the last drive-in theatre in Winnipeg.

It’s very difficult to operate a drive-in theatre in Canada due to the limited Summer season plus chances that rain could void a few nights. A Cineplex spokesperson said that in order to be viable, the company would need the theatre to serve 1,000 cars every night – which was pretty much impossible.
