Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!
State & Main

They’re conveniently located in Kildonan Place Mall, and make a good addition, and alternative, to the crowd of other chain restaurants found on Regent Avenue.
They’re a sister company to Original Joe’s, and you can definitely see the similarities between the two based on their décor and menu. We would have to give preference to State & Main however, considering their menu has way more choices.
They claim to serve classic dishes, with an inventive twist; and choices like Jalapeno Mac & Cheese and Butter Chicken Poutine can attest to that. They have a lengthy menu, with choices like sandwiches, soups, burgers, steaks, flatbreads, pastas, salads and even tacos. We were impressed by the large menu, but were curious to see how the food measured up!

Our second visit, we tried the fish tacos and the Rueben sandwich. On the plus side, all mains come with two sides, so you do not leave hungry. Sides include your usual suspects, plus some interesting options like jalapeno cornbread, honey slaw and deviled egg potato salad.
The steak was seasoned well, but slightly overcooked. The grilled Rueben was delicious but extremely greasy, nothing healthy about that sandwich! The chicken fingers, tacos and all of the side dishes were quite satisfying. You may not find culinary masterpieces here, but we were pleased with our meals on both visits.

The size of their menu, and those few unique choices that they do offer, help to set them apart from the nearby competitors. For an easy, reliable meal that’s decently priced, we would choose State & Main over many of the other chain restaurants, and we recommend you give them a try!
