Dhoom Restaurant and Lounge

Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!

They’ve extensively renovated the old Pizza Hut on York Avenue and they did a really good job at it. The space is rich with dark colors and modern décor, and no hints to the fact it was once a Pizza Hut! An intriguing mirror and light feature is at the entrance way and acts as a conversation starter while you wait for a hostess.

Dhoom Restaurant specializes in Indian cuisine but they offer a variety of Western choices and pizzas as well. They also have a good sized buffet operating all day, which features salads, rice and about 8 different Indian dishes for under $20.00. It was nice to see that the cooks came out frequently to restock and clean up the buffet area.

The dine-in menu starts off with a long list of appetizers, including Tandoori Sheesh Kebobs, Chicken Malai Tikka, calamari, coconut or garlic shrimp, chicken wings and a seemingly endless list of Na’an bread choices. The menu continues onto a hefty list of Western dishes, including many pizzas before reaching an even longer section of Indian cuisine. Having only been out for Indian food a handful of times, we appreciated the short descriptions following the entrees.

The service staff members are friendly and attentive, but busy. It took a while to place our order, and the food itself took a while to come out, but it was hot and fresh once it did arrive.
The Chicken Biryani was flavorful, spicy and there was no shortage of chicken pieces in it. The Battered Haddock came with one large piece of fish, fries and their daily vegetable. The fish itself was satisfying but the side dishes, including a medley of bagged vegetables, are fairly basic.

Dhoom Restaurant provides a modern and relaxing space to enjoy an authentic meal of Indian cuisine, or a quick and fresh buffet. Overall, we were satisfied but not blown away by our experience at Dhoom. However, with a menu of that size, we will definitely visit them again to try some of their other items!
