Cafe Carlo

Cafe Carlo

Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!

This quaint restaurant has maintained a commitment to quality, home-made foods since their opening in 1989. Reservations are recommended, but on a weeknight, we were able to get in without one.

The menu is not very long, but packed full of quality choices and they also offer daily specials to complement their classic dishes. Appetizers include choices like Risotto Croquettes, poutine, PEI Mussels, Scallops and Fish Tacos. Some of the entrée choices include Fett Chile, Szechuan Linguine, Mediterranean Spaghetti and a Veal Chop with spaetzle. We really enjoyed how atypical their pasta choices were; there are a lot of places to get great pasta, but Café Carlo’s options are nice if you want something a little different.

We got the Scallops for our appetizer, along with some Caesar Salads. The scallops are topped with bacon jam, and sit in a pool of white bean puree and chopped leeks. The flavours are complex and work so well together; this dish is an absolute must-try, even if you’re not normally a fan of scallops.

We can’t say enough about this dish, all of the ingredients made for such an amazing flavor and although it had a bite to it, the dish was not overly spicy. The La Bomba garlic toast was made unique by the paste of crushed peppers and vegetables underneath the cheese.

Café Carlo’s slogan is “Created to be Craved” and after our visit, we can definitely attest to that. We can’t wait to go back and try some more of their creations!
