Rogers Wins NHL 12-Year Broadcasting Rights

RIP NHL on TSN. The NHL has reached a 12-year, $5.2-billion agreement with Rogers Communications for the league’s broadcast and multimedia rights. The deal will change the face hockey on TV. Once the 2014-15 season faces off, you’ll be watching hockey on Rogers SportsNet instead of TSN. The deal will run until the 2025-26 season.

Above is a sample NHL Broadcast Schedule created by Rogers.

As part of the deal, CBC will continue to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada and the TVA network in Quebec has all of the Canadian French-language multi-media rights.

TSN, who was the long-time broadcasting partner of the NHL, will be completely shut out in the deal. Without hockey, TSN is left with 77 CFL regular-season and playoff games, men’s, women’s and junior world championships in hockey, the national and world championships in curling, Major League Soccer, and a handful of Toronto Raptors games. It also holds the Canadian distribution rights for a package of NFL games, including the Sunday night and Monday night games, all four majors from golf and tennis, and some Premier League soccer games.

TSN Jets will also cease to exist after the 2012-13 Season. Rogers hasn’t announced if it will be offering a similar package.

After the acquisition and rebrand of TheScore, Rogers is quickly becoming to sports entertainment power house. [NATIONAL POST]
