The City has increased the number of patching crews to 12 and they will be out in full force this week. They hope to patch up those nasty holes in a shorter timeframe.

Since Winnipeg is still seeing pretty cold temperatures, hand patching of a cold mixture is the method being used by City crews. Once temperatures warm up, they will be able to use pothole patching machines (Road Patchers) which will provide a quicker and more durable repair.

Winnipeggers can report pothole locations by calling 311, using the 311 app, or by emailing them at 311@winnipeg.ca.

Drive safe Winnipeg! And if you’re swerving to avoid a pothole, make sure to slow down and shoulder check to make sure there isn’t another vehicle in the other lane.

How are potholes formed?
Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water after the water has entered into the ground under the pavement. When water freezes, it expands. When it melts in the Spring, a hole if left in the pavement where the expended frozen water used to be.
