The City is installing 45 new pedestrian countdown signals in 2015 to increase safety for pedestrians.

Pedestrian countdown signals provide better information to pedestrians by displaying the amount of time left to cross a street. With this information, pedestrians can make more informed decisions about crossing the street and can adjust walking speeds based on the time displayed.

Motorists can also use these countdown signals to anticipate an amber light. Amber lights are triggered once the pedestrian timers hit 0.

Pedestrian Countdown Signals were installed in Winnipeg in January 2014 on a priority basis following a successful pilot project in 2013.

Locations are selected and prioritized based on a number of factors including: crosswalk distance, intersection complexity, traffic volume, land use, speed limit, proximity to schools or large populations of seniors, and ridership at nearby transit stops.
