Effective today, Manitobans will no longer have to pay a deductible for vandalism claims.

If you insure your vehicle with an Autopac Extension deductible package ($100 or $200), then you qualify for this change.

Gord Mackintosh, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance says “Our government has heard the concerns of those who have been victims of this senseless crime. This amendment will benefit those vehicle owners who choose to carry the $100 or $200 deductible option, and who suffer damage to their vehicles as a result of criminal vandalism.”

The average cost of a vandalism claim is about $1,300. In 2014 there were 10,000 vandalism claims opened with Manitoba Public Insurance. Vehicle vandalism is now at the forefront of claims after a rash of criminal incidents.

This policy change will benefit approximately 75 per cent of all MPI customers who currently have the optional $100 and $200 deductible packages. However, it will result in a premium adjustment of $3 to $5 per year.

The increase in premium will be seen starting March 1, 2016.
