DESCRIPTION:Harry Manx at the West End Cultural Centre – Wednesday\, April 13\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\n“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West\, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. \nHarry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters\, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. \nHarry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan\,in fact he had been living in another part of India for many years already\, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage\, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. He learned Eastern scales and eventually ragas\, deceptively complex and regimented musical patterns that form the basis of Indian composition. Learning the voicings of Indian music is a subtle art that comes with time. Harry spent most of twelve years in India learning that. It was later on that Harry decided to explore the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. \nBorn on the Isle of Man\, Manx immigrated to Ontario with his parents when he was a child. He started working with bands as a ‘roadie’ at age 15 and gradually worked his way up to becoming the regular sound man at the well-known El Mocambo (blues) club in Toronto. There he worked with a slew of blues legends. Harry admits that blues is still at the heart of much of his work. “I’ve always had one foot in the blues from those days … what I got from those artists is a groove. That’s what I’m particularly interested in is the groove\, and that’s the way I play blues”. “I went to Europe when I was 20 and started making money as a busker\,” recalls Manx. “I’ve worked mostly as a musician since then\, though I did some theatre work for a while. I was a one-man band with a drums and a cymbals for a time too. It was really a lot of fun” \nManx’s time in India has imbued his music with an intangible spiritual quality. “the song reveals who you are\, it’s the vehicle for your message\, your inspirational ideas or your story\,” explained Manx. “Like many people I’m interested in my own development as a person and that’s represented in my songs\, I’m searching for truth through art and spirituality. My songs are a synthesis of everything I’ve absorbed\, all my experiences and I share that. I’m glad that it means something to people.” \n“Indian music moves a person inward\,” he explains. “It’s traditionally used in religious ceremonies and during meditations because it puts you into this whole other place (now\, here). But Western music has the ability to move you outward\, into celebration and dance. There are some ragas that sound bluesy\, and there are ways to bend strings while playing blues that sound Indian. I may be forcing the relationship between the two musical cultures\, but I keep thinking they were made for each other. That leads me to more and more experimentation. The journey has been great so far.” Manx is a prolific artist\, releasing 12 albums in a 12 year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards\, six Juno nominations\, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007. \nHis most recent original release\, “Om Suite Ohm” was voted by the Montreal daily La Presse as one of only 4 CDs to watch for in 2013. Guitar Player Magazine called it “his most fully realized work to date”. Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues\, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre\, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate.  \n \nWith a stage banter striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon\, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear\, rooms shrink\, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs\, living the songs\, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing\, dancing\, crying\, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along.  “We’re folk singers\, we try to write stuff that people can relate to\,” says Edwards\, whose looming stage presence and penetrating eyes find him the yin to Luft’s petite\, snort-laughing yang. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject\, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love\, loss\, and environment\, delivered with soaring\, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo\, guitar and harmonica. However\, a Small Glories performance is really about what happens in-between the songs. “The feedback we get from a lot of audiences is that it’s not just about the music for them\,” Luft says. “It’s the whole package.” \n \nOn record\, The Small Glories take the musical synergy honed from hundreds of shows together\, and expand it into a new soundscape amplified by pounding drums and other textural embellishments which only reinforce the magic of Luft and Edwards’ innate chemistry — a chemistry labeled the “Lennon-McCartney syndrome\,” by Americana UK\, writing\, “Some things just work together… to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection.” But don’t just take a European reviewer’s word for it — the band’s debut album\, 2016’s Wondrous Traveler was also praised in Pitchfork by legendary American rock critic Greil Marcus\, who wrote\, “…in moments (The Small Glories) find the darkening chord change the best bluegrass — from the Stanley Brothers to Be Good Tanyas — has always hidden in the sweet slide of the rhythm\, the tiny shift where the person telling the story suddenly understands it.” \n \nIt’s this yearning for understanding which finds the band often taking more time to introduce a song than it actually takes to play it. Luft\, an original member of harmony sweethearts The Wailin’ Jennys and whose parents were folksingers influenced by the great activist Pete Seeger\, knows that sometimes a song is all you need to bring people together.  But often\, it is more. “(Seeger) was the king of uniting people through singing\,” Luft says. “There’s so much animosity and divisiveness in our world these days… as artists\, part of our job is to somehow create unity.” \n \nThe Small Glories duplicate and reinforce each others’ many strengths and yet allow their distinct personalities to shine through\, resulting in a live show that is as heartwarming as it is hilarious\, as finger-picking proficient as it is relatable\, and as Canadian as\, well… it’s very Canadian. But that hasn’t stopped them from winning over audiences from Nashville to the Australian outback. The world truly changed in the fall however\, when something truly magnificent happened in Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada. A beacon of hope was lit and has shone brightly ever since – The Arrogant Worms. The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on campus radio. The early feedback on the live shows was clear:  lose the sketches.  So the songs endured and they all remain because the band hates to throw anything out. \nThe songs were written to make fun of a big dumb world. Luckily\, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick\, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The shows are fast\, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick\, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia. \nThe Arrogant Worms have sold more than 160\,000 copies of their 13 albums.  Their most recent offering is SPACE\, a collection of 16 new songs released in 2014 that bravely tackles the hard issues like Local Politicians\, Yoga Pants and Uncomfortable Chairs.  The band has played on three continents to crowds as large as 100\,000 and were recognized in 2003 as the Touring Act of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenters Association. The Worms have entertained at corporate functions\, sung anthems at sporting events and emceed at major festivals. Their songs are in school lesson plans\, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle. On earth or in space\, everyone digs these Worms. \nThe Arrogant Worms are as comfortable on the radio or on camera as they are on stage. Their energy and showmanship were captured on the DVD of their concert with the renowned Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. They were awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” at the 2018 and 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards. \nApollo Suns began in 2016 following the deconstruction of Ed Durocher (Guitar) and Dave Guenette’s (bass) previous band Electric Soul. Over the years the band has seen a large rotation of some very talented and have now solidified the core group of Glenn Radley (Drums)\, Erika Einarson (Percussion)\, Niall Cade (Tenor Sax)\, Bryn Herperger (Bass)\, Garrett Malenko (Trumpet)\, Benjamin James Hill (Trombone)\, Aaron Bartel (Bari Sax) and Anatol Rennie (Keyboards/Synths).  \nWith each Anatol\, Aaron\, Glenn\, Bryn\, Niall\, and Erika having studied music at the U of M and CMU along with their previous bands including other genre-bending acts such as The Dirty Catfish Brass Band\, Super Duty Tough Work\, Moses Mayes and Sapphire Empire; there has been no lack of musical creativity amongst the band. Apollo Suns constantly challenge themselves in their writing by constructing jazz influenced songs with the end goal of maintaining an overall accessible and catchy track for listeners of all backgrounds. \nTheir debut EP\, Each Day a Different Sun\, was released April 2017 followed by a Western Canadian tour in support of the release. They have since been through Western Canada twice and Eastern Canada once. The album spent seven weeks on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts with its top position at #15. \nApollo Suns released their sophomore EP\, Dawn Offerings\, in late April of 2019 with two sold out shows in their hometown of Winnipeg\, MB. The release was followed by multiple tours and festival showcases across Canada to support the album. The album reached number #7 on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts.  \nHaving recently signed with USA based record label COLOR RED they will be releasing their third EP\, A Relationship of Force\, in late 2021 and supporting the album with a robust North American tour itinerary in 2022/23. \nSome of their most notable shows include support slots for The Comet is Coming\, The Brooks\, Anomalie\, Mariachi Ghost\, Five Alarm Funk\, Kobo Town\,  and Bend Sinister; as well as showcases at Canadian Music Week\, Winnipeg International Jazz Fest\, Big Fun Festival\, Ness Creek Festival\, Festival Du Voyageur and Winnipeg Fringe Festival. \nApollo Suns are an exciting band out of Winnipeg who are not afraid to walk a fine line and pave their own musical path to success and into the hearts of music fans all over Canada and soon internationally. They don’t care whether you get what they’re doing\, because their thoroughly modern rock is more ahead of the curve than anyone else you might try and pigeonhole them with. And they really don’t care whether you like the messages in their songs\, because what they sing about is important\, if uncomfortable. \n \nThat attitude might seem misguided for a band who have yet to release their debut album. In this age where music’s money comes largely from touring\, fans are more important than ever – they’re the ones who buy the tickets to shows and ultimately give artists the opportunity to keep playing and progressing. But the LA four-piece aren’t complete beginners – since forming in 2013\, frontman Josh Katz\, guitarist Joey Morrow\, drummer Anthony Sonetti\, and bassist Alex Espiritu have toured relentlessly across the US and beyond\, building up a reputation as a formidable live force as well as an ever-growing mass of loyal followers and praise from the likes of Billboard\, Forbes\, and Consequence Of Sound. \n \nThough the band credit their years of gigging with giving them the life experience to write their debut album\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’\, it’s also had its downsides\, especially for Katz. The singer and guitarist suffers from anxiety and panic disorder – something that he’s had to learn how to cope with on the road. “I once ran off stage mid-song and just had to take a beat and was very confused\,” he says\, offering an example of how the problem can affect him. “I wasn’t sure if I should be throwing up or sitting down. Typically\, it’s just clenching every muscle in my body until it hopefully goes away. I can barely stand up\, barely get notes out. It’s all of these feelings at once.” \n \nIt’s that problem that inspired ‘Ghost’\, the band’s big breakthrough single. After coming home from tour\, Katz was so fed up with what he had to go through to get on stage every night\, he was in two minds whether to carry on with music. “If I’m miserable every night\, why am I doing it?” he asked himself. It was that song\, which reached the top of the US charts\, that saved Badflower. \n \nDespite its success\, the group was initially sceptical about it being more than an album track. In its often graphic lyrics\, Katz plays out a dark\, suicidal fantasy – “This life is overwhelming and I’m ready for the next one\,” he sighs resignedly at one point. They worried listeners would think they were glorifying suicide\, cynically using a very real and serious problem for their own gain. “But people got it immediately and we realised how many people are affected by depression\, panic disorder\, and anxiety issues\,” Katz explains. “You hear about it all the time\, you see it on every commercial – there’s some anti-depressant being sold to you because everybody has these issues – but people don’t like to talk about it that much.” \n \nWhile ‘Ghost’ is a somewhat harrowing take on mental health issues\, not all of ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ is as serious. Opener ‘x ANA x’ (inspired in part by Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre documentary The Defiant Ones) tackles a similar topic but with a far more sardonic tone. An ode to the helpful qualities of Xanax\, it’s eyebrow-raising\, incredibly self-aware and rife with meta moments (in one breakdown Katz cheerily asks: “Hey\, wanna see what happens when I mix Xanax\, blow\, and a MacBook Pro?”). Along with the constantly changing music – be it speeding up\, stuttering almost to the brink of collapse\, or weaving even more claustrophobic layers together – it adds up to something completely manic. \n \n“The whole song is meant to feel like a panic attack – unexplained chaos happening within you\,” Katz says. “We wrote that song together and then I took what we had to our house in the desert and stayed awake all night and\, like a mad scientist\, destroyed everything and chopped it up. I didn’t feel like it was manic enough. It’s making fun of anxiety but it’s also making fun of itself.” \n \nAs a band with plenty to say\, mental health isn’t the only message Badflower share on their debut. ‘Murder Games’ is the album’s most intense and urgent sounding cut\, metallic\, guillotine-esque swishes entwined with a punishing guitar line that sets you on edge. Its lyrics speak about veganism (Katz has been vegan for four years) in uncompromising terms. “That’s gonna alienate our band like crazy\,” the frontman shrugs\, unbothered. “We think it’s something important that needs to be talked about so we’re gonna talk about it. It’s about getting the conversation started. It’s about getting people to look at it in a different way and not be so passive about the idea that something in society that you grew up hearing was right might not be as right as you think.” \n \n‘Die’ also has the potential to cause controversy. Partly a damning assessment of Trump’s position on the environment (Morrow is keen to point out the President is not the only target of the song)\, it features Katz screaming the title as if his own life depends on it. But his sentiment is not what you might immediately assume. “It doesn’t mean\, ‘Hey\, go get murdered’ or ‘I’m gonna kill you’\,” he clarifies. “It’s more all of those people who are so stuck in their ways\, who are afraid of change and afraid of evolution\, need to get old and die off so the next generation can come up and make some change and do something good.” Despite first appearances\, it’s intended as a statement of progression. “We’re meant to move forward\, not stagnate\,” Espiritu notes. \n \nElsewhere\, the album navigates subjects like abuse (‘Daddy’)\, depression in the face of success (’24’)\, and social media stalking (‘Girlfriend’). The latter merges old and new\, layering lyrics about Instagram filters and the internet over a big blues-rock jam. “We’ve always wanted to write about that anyway\,” says Katz\, “and it was the perfect\, wacky blues riff to write that over. I think we came up with something very special.” \n \nBadflower’s focus might be on big conversations but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to turn their attention to less weighty subjects too. ‘Promise Me’ is the only traditional love song on the record but not even it can escape the band’s entrenched darkness. “That’s my proudest moment on the album\,” Espiritu says. “We talk about doing what we want and what the spirit of rock and roll is\, and then we have ‘Promise Me’\, which is this leftfield\, beautiful\, romantic love song\, and we’re able to spin it and make it our own.” The making it their own\, Katz explains\, involves one of the song’s characters meeting their maker. \n \nProduced with Noah Shain (Atreyu\, Dead Sara)\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ represents a band full of ideas and submerged in the most modern of sounds. The band’s intention was to make the most 2018 album they possibly could\, unfazed by the idea it could sound dated a few years down the line. “Timeless music is amazing but everybody’s trying so hard to make timeless music that they’re making vague\, cookie-cutter shit\,” Katz says. “It sounds like everything else and I don’t think there’s really many rock bands who are trying to write anything current. We wanted to make something for this generation.” \n \nYou might have realised by now this band isn’t one to limit themselves. “We don’t even consider ourselves a rock band\,” Katz says defiantly. “If we decide to put out a rap album next week\, we’re gonna do it. Watch us. We don’t fucking care. We do what we want. Rock and roll used to be about that spirit and that got lost somewhere.” You can count on Badflower to put it right back in the heart of things\, whether anyone else likes it or not.

He is comfortable playing with his band whether it be a 3 piece or up to 7 piece\, solo or duo.  \nCheck out YouTube for videos including a performance with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra 20 piece band or his solo version of Kingfish Blues. \nIn the early 70’s he co-founded several popular blues bands including the popular band Houndog in 1976. \nIn the last 43 years he has been part of the backup bands for such legends as Bo Diddley\, Gatemouth Brown\, Otis Rush\, Billy Boy Arnold\, Johnnie Johnson and Jimmy T99 Nelson and many more. As well as opening shows for such greats as James Cotton\, Johnny Winter\, Buddy Guy\, John Prine just to name a few. A career highlight was sharing the tour bus and stage with BB King and his band as his opening act on a Western Canadian tour in 1983. \nBrent has played many bars and nightclubs over the years. Some of the famous and legendary night clubs in Canada include: \nYale Hotel – Vancouver \nKing Eddy – Calgary \nBlues on Whyte – Edmonton \nBuds on Broadway – Saskatoon \nWindsor Hotel – Winnipeg \nAmbassador Hotel – Edmonton \nSilver Dollar – Toronto \n \nBrent has also played many concerts and festivals over the years including: \nWinnipeg Folk Festival \nEdmonton Folk Festival \nVancouver Folk Festival \nSaskatoon Jazz Festival \nWinnipeg Jazz Festival \nHarbourfront Blues Festival Toronto \nWinnipeg Blues and BBQ Festival \nBlues Brews and BBQ Kitchener \nLabatt’s Blues Festival Edmonton \n \nNumerous appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival also made it possible for Brent to play and share many workshop stages with a lot of great artists over the years. This experience has come in handy when doing shows in schools and such. \nOver the years he has appeared on many TV and radio shows. Some of the most memorable were 90 Minutes Live CBC with Peter Gzowski. Jimmy King Presents CTV’s Live at the Warehouse. \nHis original songs “Goodbye Canadian Penny” and “Brown Water Blues” were also featured on CBC Radio Up To Speed Winnipeg and CBC National Radio As It Happens in 2012 – 2013. \nIn 2008 Brent appeared in the highly successful play Mesa for the Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg\, providing the musical landscape\, singing and acting.
