SUMMARY:Corb Lund
DESCRIPTION:Corb Lund brings The Hurtin’ Albertans along with him on his Back To The Barrooms Tour 2022 as he returns to his favourite small venues.\n\n\nPre-sales of General Admission tickets are now complete. There will be some tickets for each night released to the public on Friday Nov 26 at 10am. Get ready\, folks\, they will go fast! \n \nCorb Lund has received multiple CCMA\, Juno\, and international award nominations and wins. A rural Albertan hailing from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a long family lineage of ranchers and rodeo people\, Lund is about as authentic as they come. Embracing both his Western heritage and his indie rock past through his music\, Lund has been known to filter a range of cowboy themes past and present through his unique lens – from rough-and-tumble tales of lawless frontier saloons to the somber realities of running a modern family ranch. \nLund released his highly anticipated album Agricultural Tragic via Warner Music Canada on June 26th\, 2020\, his first album of original songs in five years\, to much acclaim; the album debut inside the top 5 in both the US and Canada. It was named #7 on the No Depression Readers’ “50 Favorite Roots Music Albums of 2020” with the publication saying\, “Eloquent and plainspoken\, the excellent Agricultural Tragic finds the affable country rocker exploring his roots as a rancher and rodeo rider while striving to adapt this traditional identity to the challenging modern world… Corb Lund radiates authenticity from first note to last.” The Associated Press said “The result is a distinctive sound — call it Country & Northwestern — that romances the region from which Lund hails\,” American Songwriter stated\, “The songs on Agricultural Tragic sparkle with a kind of authenticity that only someone who lives that life can project” while Saving Country Music said it was “…some of the most compelling country and western music you can find.” \nMost recently\, Lund has been actively leading protests against the Alberta provincial government’s plan to allow open-pit coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. \nThis fall\, Lund re-released “This is My Prairie”\, featuring some of Alberta’s biggest country artists like Brett Kissel\, Paul Brandt\, Terri Clark and more\, which some are calling an anthem for the fight against coal. More music is imminently on the horizon for 2022.

SUMMARY:Harry Manx
DESCRIPTION:Harry Manx at the West End Cultural Centre – Wednesday\, April 13\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\n“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West\, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. \nHarry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters\, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. \nHarry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan\,in fact he had been living in another part of India for many years already\, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage\, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. He learned Eastern scales and eventually ragas\, deceptively complex and regimented musical patterns that form the basis of Indian composition. Learning the voicings of Indian music is a subtle art that comes with time. Harry spent most of twelve years in India learning that. It was later on that Harry decided to explore the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. \nBorn on the Isle of Man\, Manx immigrated to Ontario with his parents when he was a child. He started working with bands as a ‘roadie’ at age 15 and gradually worked his way up to becoming the regular sound man at the well-known El Mocambo (blues) club in Toronto. There he worked with a slew of blues legends. Harry admits that blues is still at the heart of much of his work. “I’ve always had one foot in the blues from those days … what I got from those artists is a groove. That’s what I’m particularly interested in is the groove\, and that’s the way I play blues”. “I went to Europe when I was 20 and started making money as a busker\,” recalls Manx. “I’ve worked mostly as a musician since then\, though I did some theatre work for a while. I was a one-man band with a drums and a cymbals for a time too. It was really a lot of fun” \nManx’s time in India has imbued his music with an intangible spiritual quality. “the song reveals who you are\, it’s the vehicle for your message\, your inspirational ideas or your story\,” explained Manx. “Like many people I’m interested in my own development as a person and that’s represented in my songs\, I’m searching for truth through art and spirituality. My songs are a synthesis of everything I’ve absorbed\, all my experiences and I share that. I’m glad that it means something to people.” \n“Indian music moves a person inward\,” he explains. “It’s traditionally used in religious ceremonies and during meditations because it puts you into this whole other place (now\, here). But Western music has the ability to move you outward\, into celebration and dance. There are some ragas that sound bluesy\, and there are ways to bend strings while playing blues that sound Indian. I may be forcing the relationship between the two musical cultures\, but I keep thinking they were made for each other. That leads me to more and more experimentation. The journey has been great so far.” Manx is a prolific artist\, releasing 12 albums in a 12 year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards\, six Juno nominations\, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007. \nHis most recent original release\, “Om Suite Ohm” was voted by the Montreal daily La Presse as one of only 4 CDs to watch for in 2013. Guitar Player Magazine called it “his most fully realized work to date”. Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues\, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. It’s a recipe that goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.

SUMMARY:Mark Reeves
DESCRIPTION:Beloved Winnipeg blues and R&B artist well-known for his incredibly vibrant live show.\n\n\nBeloved Winnipeg blues and R&B artist well-known for his incredibly vibrant live show. \n \nMark is one of those artists who’s been around\, building steam\, making records and touring in support of some of the world’s best-known roots artists. The past two decades have seen Mark stream through a journey from busker to seasoned performer with masterful chops and the kind of mesmerizing stage presence that most artists never achieve in a lifetime. Turning heads because of youthful talent\, he won a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music at 19\, paid his dues in the blues clubs\, made a record with Los Lobos producer Keith Keller’s at Keller’s mansion in New Orleans\, won a sackful of awards\, and warmed up stages for everyone from Robert Cray and Blue Rodeo to Colin James and Jesse Winchester. It’s been said that if Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett had a love child\, Mark Reeves would be it. Fans of Lovett and Martin Sexton will eat up Reeves’ hard-earned positive vibe\, rock solid rhythmic groove and kick-ass Motown horn section which adds a pleasant double-espresso kick to the mix.Anybody who loves R&B will immediately be inspired by Mark’s infectious\, dance-all-night grove thang\, but there are profoundly beautiful moments here\, and unpretentious lyrical wisdom that makes you sit back while you catch your breath.

SUMMARY:The Honeysliders plus Son of Dave
DESCRIPTION:Take one part dirty country\, one part honest\, prairie vocals\, and one part party-rock band and you get…The Honeysliders.\n\n\nTake one part dirty country\, one part honest\, prairie vocals\, and one part party-rock band and you get…The Honeysliders. \nBirthed from the popular Winnipeg cover band\, “James and the Giants\,” founding members Jamie Buckboro and Micah Bell felt they had something more to say. Banding together with keyboardist Alex Campballse (The Bros. Landreth\, Imaginary Cities\, JD Edwards Band\, Sweet Alibi) and veteran Winnipeg drummer Jesse Miller (Romi Mayes) the boys found their sound and The Honeysliders were born. \nChanneling The Band and Neil Young\, these boys put on a show that transports you to a time when bellbottoms and moustaches ruled the world and albums were played on turntables (as God intended). \nDrawing from a wide circle of talented Winnipeg musicians and songwriters\, The Honeysliders are working on their first full-length record. Stay Tuned.

SUMMARY:The Small Glories
DESCRIPTION:“To witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection…”\n\n\nRoots powerhouse duo The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards\, a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies. Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre\, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate. \n \nWith a stage banter striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon\, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear\, rooms shrink\, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs\, living the songs\, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing\, dancing\, crying\, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along. “We’re folk singers\, we try to write stuff that people can relate to\,” says Edwards\, whose looming stage presence and penetrating eyes find him the yin to Luft’s petite\, snort-laughing yang. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject\, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love\, loss\, and environment\, delivered with soaring\, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo\, guitar and harmonica. However\, a Small Glories performance is really about what happens in-between the songs. “The feedback we get from a lot of audiences is that it’s not just about the music for them\,” Luft says. “It’s the whole package.” \n \nOn record\, The Small Glories take the musical synergy honed from hundreds of shows together\, and expand it into a new soundscape amplified by pounding drums and other textural embellishments which only reinforce the magic of Luft and Edwards’ innate chemistry — a chemistry labeled the “Lennon-McCartney syndrome\,” by Americana UK\, writing\, “Some things just work together… to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection.” But don’t just take a European reviewer’s word for it — the band’s debut album\, 2016’s Wondrous Traveler was also praised in Pitchfork by legendary American rock critic Greil Marcus\, who wrote\, “…in moments (The Small Glories) find the darkening chord change the best bluegrass — from the Stanley Brothers to Be Good Tanyas — has always hidden in the sweet slide of the rhythm\, the tiny shift where the person telling the story suddenly understands it.” \n \nIt’s this yearning for understanding which finds the band often taking more time to introduce a song than it actually takes to play it. Luft\, an original member of harmony sweethearts The Wailin’ Jennys and whose parents were folksingers influenced by the great activist Pete Seeger\, knows that sometimes a song is all you need to bring people together. But often\, it is more. “(Seeger) was the king of uniting people through singing\,” Luft says. “There’s so much animosity and divisiveness in our world these days… as artists\, part of our job is to somehow create unity.” \n \nThe Small Glories duplicate and reinforce each others’ many strengths and yet allow their distinct personalities to shine through\, resulting in a live show that is as heartwarming as it is hilarious\, as finger-picking proficient as it is relatable\, and as Canadian as\, well… it’s very Canadian. But that hasn’t stopped them from winning over audiences from Nashville to the Australian outback. Their highly anticipated sophomore album “Assiniboine & the Red” was released the summer of 2019 on Compass/Red House Records. \n \n“Some things just work together: the Lennon and McCartney syndrome – and to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection…” \n— David Allen\, Americana UK

SUMMARY:The Arrogant Worms
DESCRIPTION:The Arrogant Worms at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, May 6th at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe year was 1991. Presumably\, some significant world events occurred. The world truly changed in the fall however\, when something truly magnificent happened in Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada. A beacon of hope was lit and has shone brightly ever since – The Arrogant Worms. The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on campus radio. The early feedback on the live shows was clear: lose the sketches. So the songs endured and they all remain because the band hates to throw anything out. \nThe songs were written to make fun of a big dumb world. Luckily\, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick\, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The shows are fast\, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick\, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia. \nThe Arrogant Worms have sold more than 160\,000 copies of their 13 albums. Their most recent offering is SPACE\, a collection of 16 new songs released in 2014 that bravely tackles the hard issues like Local Politicians\, Yoga Pants and Uncomfortable Chairs. The band has played on three continents to crowds as large as 100\,000 and were recognized in 2003 as the Touring Act of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenters Association. The Worms have entertained at corporate functions\, sung anthems at sporting events and emceed at major festivals. Their songs are in school lesson plans\, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle. On earth or in space\, everyone digs these Worms. \nThe Arrogant Worms are as comfortable on the radio or on camera as they are on stage. Their energy and showmanship were captured on the DVD of their concert with the renowned Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The DVD also features appearances by Worm pals figure skating champion Kurt Browning\, astronaut Chris Hadfield and actors Tom Cavanaugh (Ed\, Love Monkey) and Nathan Fillion (Castle\, Firefly). \nIn recent years the Worms have been pleased to donate their time and talent to the cause of literacy in Canada through Frontier College and were twice awarded the Peter Gzowski Award for their efforts. \nSo nearly a quarter century after they began\, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it. And if you think you don’t need it\, well you’re wrong. You do. The Arrogant Worms know what’s best for you and what’s best for you is The Arrogant Worms. \n—– \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.

SUMMARY:Del Barber
DESCRIPTION:Del Barber is\, simply\, a world-class songwriter. Please join all of us at the Times Change(d) as we celebrate a genuine homegrown hero!\n\n\nAs the follow up to his 2020 Juno-nominated album Easy Keeper\, Stray Dogs finds Del Barber bridging his past and present. Conceived during pandemic isolation at his rural Manitoba home\, the eight songs on Stray Dogs are drawn mainly from Del’s large stock of previously unfinished demos\, given renewed focus and polish by his longtime band and producer Scott Franchuk. \n \nParing things down to the bone\, the acoustic-based Stray Dogs captures the essence of Del’s art\, of which Rolling Stone wrote\, “Like John Prine (one of his primary influences)\, Barber writes the types of songs his characters might listen to themselves.” \n \nFrom the first single “Meantime”—a show of support to his favourite venue in Winnipeg—to the heart-swelling closer “Just A Little Heat\,” written with his father\, Stray Dogs is a powerful reflection of the resilience we have all displayed over the past year. It also shows how Del has emerged even stronger\, and how he truly deserves a place among Canada’s most celebrated singer-songwriters.

They were awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” at the 2018 and 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards. \nApollo Suns began in 2016 following the deconstruction of Ed Durocher (Guitar) and Dave Guenette’s (bass) previous band Electric Soul. Apollo Suns constantly challenge themselves in their writing by constructing jazz influenced songs with the end goal of maintaining an overall accessible and catchy track for listeners of all backgrounds. \nTheir debut EP\, Each Day a Different Sun\, was released April 2017 followed by a Western Canadian tour in support of the release. They have since been through Western Canada twice and Eastern Canada once. The album spent seven weeks on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts with its top position at #15. \nApollo Suns released their sophomore EP\, Dawn Offerings\, in late April of 2019 with two sold out shows in their hometown of Winnipeg\, MB. The release was followed by multiple tours and festival showcases across Canada to support the album. The album reached number #7 on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts. \nHaving recently signed with USA based record label COLOR RED they will be releasing their third EP\, A Relationship of Force\, in late 2021 and supporting the album with a robust North American tour itinerary in 2022/23. \nSome of their most notable shows include support slots for The Comet is Coming\, The Brooks\, Anomalie\, Mariachi Ghost\, Five Alarm Funk\, Kobo Town\, and Bend Sinister; as well as showcases at Canadian Music Week\, Winnipeg International Jazz Fest\, Big Fun Festival\, Ness Creek Festival\, Festival Du Voyageur and Winnipeg Fringe Festival. \nApollo Suns are an exciting band out of Winnipeg who are not afraid to walk a fine line and pave their own musical path to success and into the hearts of music fans all over Canada and soon internationally. SUMMARY:Martyn Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Martyn Joseph at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, May 8\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nMartyn Joseph is a completely unique and mind blowing artist. Take everything you think you know about singer songwriters….and rip it up. For one man and a guitar he creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic\, compelling and passionate. Be it to two hundred people or twenty thousand\, he blows the crowd away night after night. \nHe is gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics and has a career spanning 30 years\, 32 albums\, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances. \nCompared to Bruce Springsteen\, John Mayer\, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews\, he has created his own style and reputation as a mesmerising live performer and stands in his own right\, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives. A unique talent driven by passion\, social awareness and love for his trade\, he’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style\, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice\, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”. \nIn addition to his 5 top 50 UK hits\, the importance of his work has been recognised by programmes such as BBC Radio 2’s prime time series on Singer/Songwriters. Social justice has an essential presence throughout his music\, which has been recognised with various humanitarian awards and plaudits. \nConcerned with making music that is relevant and vital to his audience\, he engages with challenging narratives tackling the complexity of the human condition\, underpinned with a promise of hope. In his own words “Really what I do is to try and write songs that might step up and make some sense of a moment in time. A good song makes you feel like you’re not alone in the world.” \nThere is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried\, resulting in labels such as Folk\, Rock\, Soul\, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture\, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures\, and stories\, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.
