SUMMARY:The Small Glories
DESCRIPTION:“To witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection…”\n\n\nRoots powerhouse duo The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards\, a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies. Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre\, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate. \n \nWith a stage banter striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon\, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear\, rooms shrink\, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs\, living the songs\, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing\, dancing\, crying\, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along. “We’re folk singers\, we try to write stuff that people can relate to\,” says Edwards\, whose looming stage presence and penetrating eyes find him the yin to Luft’s petite\, snort-laughing yang. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject\, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love\, loss\, and environment\, delivered with soaring\, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo\, guitar and harmonica. However\, a Small Glories performance is really about what happens in-between the songs. “The feedback we get from a lot of audiences is that it’s not just about the music for them\,” Luft says. “It’s the whole package.” \n \nOn record\, The Small Glories take the musical synergy honed from hundreds of shows together\, and expand it into a new soundscape amplified by pounding drums and other textural embellishments which only reinforce the magic of Luft and Edwards’ innate chemistry — a chemistry labeled the “Lennon-McCartney syndrome\,” by Americana UK\, writing\, “Some things just work together… to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection.” But don’t just take a European reviewer’s word for it — the band’s debut album\, 2016’s Wondrous Traveler was also praised in Pitchfork by legendary American rock critic Greil Marcus\, who wrote\, “…in moments (The Small Glories) find the darkening chord change the best bluegrass — from the Stanley Brothers to Be Good Tanyas — has always hidden in the sweet slide of the rhythm\, the tiny shift where the person telling the story suddenly understands it.” \n \nIt’s this yearning for understanding which finds the band often taking more time to introduce a song than it actually takes to play it. Luft\, an original member of harmony sweethearts The Wailin’ Jennys and whose parents were folksingers influenced by the great activist Pete Seeger\, knows that sometimes a song is all you need to bring people together. But often\, it is more. “(Seeger) was the king of uniting people through singing\,” Luft says. “There’s so much animosity and divisiveness in our world these days… as artists\, part of our job is to somehow create unity.” \n \nThe Small Glories duplicate and reinforce each others’ many strengths and yet allow their distinct personalities to shine through\, resulting in a live show that is as heartwarming as it is hilarious\, as finger-picking proficient as it is relatable\, and as Canadian as\, well… it’s very Canadian. But that hasn’t stopped them from winning over audiences from Nashville to the Australian outback. Their highly anticipated sophomore album “Assiniboine & the Red” was released the summer of 2019 on Compass/Red House Records. \n \n“Some things just work together: the Lennon and McCartney syndrome – and to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection…” \n— David Allen\, Americana UK

SUMMARY:The Arrogant Worms
DESCRIPTION:The Arrogant Worms at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, May 6th at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe year was 1991. Presumably\, some significant world events occurred. The world truly changed in the fall however\, when something truly magnificent happened in Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada. A beacon of hope was lit and has shone brightly ever since – The Arrogant Worms. The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on campus radio. The early feedback on the live shows was clear: lose the sketches. So the songs endured and they all remain because the band hates to throw anything out. \nThe songs were written to make fun of a big dumb world. Luckily\, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick\, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The shows are fast\, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick\, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia. \nThe Arrogant Worms have sold more than 160\,000 copies of their 13 albums. Their most recent offering is SPACE\, a collection of 16 new songs released in 2014 that bravely tackles the hard issues like Local Politicians\, Yoga Pants and Uncomfortable Chairs. The band has played on three continents to crowds as large as 100\,000 and were recognized in 2003 as the Touring Act of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenters Association. The Worms have entertained at corporate functions\, sung anthems at sporting events and emceed at major festivals. Their songs are in school lesson plans\, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle. On earth or in space\, everyone digs these Worms. \nThe Arrogant Worms are as comfortable on the radio or on camera as they are on stage. Their energy and showmanship were captured on the DVD of their concert with the renowned Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The DVD also features appearances by Worm pals figure skating champion Kurt Browning\, astronaut Chris Hadfield and actors Tom Cavanaugh (Ed\, Love Monkey) and Nathan Fillion (Castle\, Firefly). \nIn recent years the Worms have been pleased to donate their time and talent to the cause of literacy in Canada through Frontier College and were twice awarded the Peter Gzowski Award for their efforts. \nSo nearly a quarter century after they began\, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it. And if you think you don’t need it\, well you’re wrong. You do. The Arrogant Worms know what’s best for you and what’s best for you is The Arrogant Worms. \n—– \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.

SUMMARY:Del Barber
DESCRIPTION:Del Barber is\, simply\, a world-class songwriter. Please join all of us at the Times Change(d) as we celebrate a genuine homegrown hero!\n\n\nAs the follow up to his 2020 Juno-nominated album Easy Keeper\, Stray Dogs finds Del Barber bridging his past and present. Conceived during pandemic isolation at his rural Manitoba home\, the eight songs on Stray Dogs are drawn mainly from Del’s large stock of previously unfinished demos\, given renewed focus and polish by his longtime band and producer Scott Franchuk. \n \nParing things down to the bone\, the acoustic-based Stray Dogs captures the essence of Del’s art\, of which Rolling Stone wrote\, “Like John Prine (one of his primary influences)\, Barber writes the types of songs his characters might listen to themselves.” \n \nFrom the first single “Meantime”—a show of support to his favourite venue in Winnipeg—to the heart-swelling closer “Just A Little Heat\,” written with his father\, Stray Dogs is a powerful reflection of the resilience we have all displayed over the past year. It also shows how Del has emerged even stronger\, and how he truly deserves a place among Canada’s most celebrated singer-songwriters.

DESCRIPTION:Apollo Suns with Zrada and The Remedies – Saturday\, May 7th at 8:00pm\n\n\nBorn from the fusing of nine Winnipeg\, Canada based musicians\, Apollo Suns have created a refreshing and innovative sound and live performance combining instrumental\, jazz\, rock and psychedelic music. They were awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” at the 2018 and 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards. \nApollo Suns began in 2016 following the deconstruction of Ed Durocher (Guitar) and Dave Guenette’s (bass) previous band Electric Soul. Over the years the band has seen a large rotation of some very talented and have now solidified the core group of Glenn Radley (Drums)\, Erika Einarson (Percussion)\, Niall Cade (Tenor Sax)\, Bryn Herperger (Bass)\, Garrett Malenko (Trumpet)\, Benjamin James Hill (Trombone)\, Aaron Bartel (Bari Sax) and Anatol Rennie (Keyboards/Synths). \nWith each Anatol\, Aaron\, Glenn\, Bryn\, Niall\, and Erika having studied music at the U of M and CMU along with their previous bands including other genre-bending acts such as The Dirty Catfish Brass Band\, Super Duty Tough Work\, Moses Mayes and Sapphire Empire; there has been no lack of musical creativity amongst the band. Apollo Suns constantly challenge themselves in their writing by constructing jazz influenced songs with the end goal of maintaining an overall accessible and catchy track for listeners of all backgrounds. \nTheir debut EP\, Each Day a Different Sun\, was released April 2017 followed by a Western Canadian tour in support of the release. They have since been through Western Canada twice and Eastern Canada once. The album spent seven weeks on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts with its top position at #15. \nApollo Suns released their sophomore EP\, Dawn Offerings\, in late April of 2019 with two sold out shows in their hometown of Winnipeg\, MB. The release was followed by multiple tours and festival showcases across Canada to support the album. The album reached number #7 on the Earshot! National Top 50 charts. \nHaving recently signed with USA based record label COLOR RED they will be releasing their third EP\, A Relationship of Force\, in late 2021 and supporting the album with a robust North American tour itinerary in 2022/23. \nSome of their most notable shows include support slots for The Comet is Coming\, The Brooks\, Anomalie\, Mariachi Ghost\, Five Alarm Funk\, Kobo Town\, and Bend Sinister; as well as showcases at Canadian Music Week\, Winnipeg International Jazz Fest\, Big Fun Festival\, Ness Creek Festival\, Festival Du Voyageur and Winnipeg Fringe Festival. \nApollo Suns are an exciting band out of Winnipeg who are not afraid to walk a fine line and pave their own musical path to success and into the hearts of music fans all over Canada and soon internationally. With the recent signing to Cielo Talent Agency (Western USA) and Loose Leaf Agency (Eastern USA). They will be working closely with the band to book\, schedule and execute tour dates in the USA. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.

SUMMARY:Stanley County Cutups
DESCRIPTION:Hard drivin’ banjo solos\, four part harmony singing\, blues infused mandolin breaks and hair-raising fiddle tunes: all the bluegrass bases!\n\n\nFrom hard drivin’ banjo solos to four part harmony singing\, blues infused mandolin breaks and hair-raising fiddle tunes\, this quintet covers all the bluegrass bases. Some nights\, when the moon is just so\, you can even hear the wail of a lonesome dobro. \nThis group has been playing together in different capacities for close to 20 years and their performances have been described as “more than fine” and “refilling my folk music cup” by audience members. The Cutups include Jess Reimer on bass\, Jeremy Hamm on mandolin and fiddle\, banjo/dobro player Tim Osmond\, fiddler Jeremy Penner and guitarist T.J. Blair. SUMMARY:Martyn Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Martyn Joseph at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, May 8\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nMartyn Joseph is a completely unique and mind blowing artist. Take everything you think you know about singer songwriters….and rip it up. For one man and a guitar he creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic\, compelling and passionate. Be it to two hundred people or twenty thousand\, he blows the crowd away night after night. \nHe is gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics and has a career spanning 30 years\, 32 albums\, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances. \nCompared to Bruce Springsteen\, John Mayer\, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews\, he has created his own style and reputation as a mesmerising live performer and stands in his own right\, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives. A unique talent driven by passion\, social awareness and love for his trade\, he’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style\, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice\, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”. \nIn addition to his 5 top 50 UK hits\, the importance of his work has been recognised by programmes such as BBC Radio 2’s prime time series on Singer/Songwriters. Social justice has an essential presence throughout his music\, which has been recognised with various humanitarian awards and plaudits. \nConcerned with making music that is relevant and vital to his audience\, he engages with challenging narratives tackling the complexity of the human condition\, underpinned with a promise of hope. In his own words “Really what I do is to try and write songs that might step up and make some sense of a moment in time. A good song makes you feel like you’re not alone in the world.” \nThere is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried\, resulting in labels such as Folk\, Rock\, Soul\, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture\, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures\, and stories\, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve.

SUMMARY:BADFLOWER
DESCRIPTION:MODO-LIVE & Programme Presents: Badflower – This Is How The World Continues… w/ Chastity\n\n\nBadflower don’t care what you think about them. They don’t care whether you get what they’re doing\, because their thoroughly modern rock is more ahead of the curve than anyone else you might try and pigeonhole them with. And they really don’t care whether you like the messages in their songs\, because what they sing about is important\, if uncomfortable. \n \nThat attitude might seem misguided for a band who have yet to release their debut album. In this age where music’s money comes largely from touring\, fans are more important than ever – they’re the ones who buy the tickets to shows and ultimately give artists the opportunity to keep playing and progressing. But the LA four-piece aren’t complete beginners – since forming in 2013\, frontman Josh Katz\, guitarist Joey Morrow\, drummer Anthony Sonetti\, and bassist Alex Espiritu have toured relentlessly across the US and beyond\, building up a reputation as a formidable live force as well as an ever-growing mass of loyal followers and praise from the likes of Billboard\, Forbes\, and Consequence Of Sound. \n \nThough the band credit their years of gigging with giving them the life experience to write their debut album\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’\, it’s also had its downsides\, especially for Katz. The singer and guitarist suffers from anxiety and panic disorder – something that he’s had to learn how to cope with on the road. “I once ran off stage mid-song and just had to take a beat and was very confused\,” he says\, offering an example of how the problem can affect him. “I wasn’t sure if I should be throwing up or sitting down. Typically\, it’s just clenching every muscle in my body until it hopefully goes away. I can barely stand up\, barely get notes out. It’s all of these feelings at once.” \n \nIt’s that problem that inspired ‘Ghost’\, the band’s big breakthrough single. After coming home from tour\, Katz was so fed up with what he had to go through to get on stage every night\, he was in two minds whether to carry on with music. “If I’m miserable every night\, why am I doing it?” he asked himself. It was that song\, which reached the top of the US charts\, that saved Badflower. \n \nDespite its success\, the group was initially sceptical about it being more than an album track. In its often graphic lyrics\, Katz plays out a dark\, suicidal fantasy – “This life is overwhelming and I’m ready for the next one\,” he sighs resignedly at one point. They worried listeners would think they were glorifying suicide\, cynically using a very real and serious problem for their own gain. “But people got it immediately and we realised how many people are affected by depression\, panic disorder\, and anxiety issues\,” Katz explains. “You hear about it all the time\, you see it on every commercial – there’s some anti-depressant being sold to you because everybody has these issues – but people don’t like to talk about it that much.” \n \nWhile ‘Ghost’ is a somewhat harrowing take on mental health issues\, not all of ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ is as serious. Opener ‘x ANA x’ (inspired in part by Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre documentary The Defiant Ones) tackles a similar topic but with a far more sardonic tone. An ode to the helpful qualities of Xanax\, it’s eyebrow-raising\, incredibly self-aware and rife with meta moments (in one breakdown Katz cheerily asks: “Hey\, wanna see what happens when I mix Xanax\, blow\, and a MacBook Pro?”). Along with the constantly changing music – be it speeding up\, stuttering almost to the brink of collapse\, or weaving even more claustrophobic layers together – it adds up to something completely manic. \n \n“The whole song is meant to feel like a panic attack – unexplained chaos happening within you\,” Katz says. “We wrote that song together and then I took what we had to our house in the desert and stayed awake all night and\, like a mad scientist\, destroyed everything and chopped it up. I didn’t feel like it was manic enough. It’s making fun of anxiety but it’s also making fun of itself.” \n \nAs a band with plenty to say\, mental health isn’t the only message Badflower share on their debut. ‘Murder Games’ is the album’s most intense and urgent sounding cut\, metallic\, guillotine-esque swishes entwined with a punishing guitar line that sets you on edge. Its lyrics speak about veganism (Katz has been vegan for four years) in uncompromising terms. “That’s gonna alienate our band like crazy\,” the frontman shrugs\, unbothered. “We think it’s something important that needs to be talked about so we’re gonna talk about it. It’s about getting the conversation started. It’s about getting people to look at it in a different way and not be so passive about the idea that something in society that you grew up hearing was right might not be as right as you think.” \n \n‘Die’ also has the potential to cause controversy. Partly a damning assessment of Trump’s position on the environment (Morrow is keen to point out the President is not the only target of the song)\, it features Katz screaming the title as if his own life depends on it. But his sentiment is not what you might immediately assume. “It doesn’t mean\, ‘Hey\, go get murdered’ or ‘I’m gonna kill you’\,” he clarifies. “It’s more all of those people who are so stuck in their ways\, who are afraid of change and afraid of evolution\, need to get old and die off so the next generation can come up and make some change and do something good.” Despite first appearances\, it’s intended as a statement of progression. “We’re meant to move forward\, not stagnate\,” Espiritu notes. \n \nElsewhere\, the album navigates subjects like abuse (‘Daddy’)\, depression in the face of success (’24’)\, and social media stalking (‘Girlfriend’). The latter merges old and new\, layering lyrics about Instagram filters and the internet over a big blues-rock jam. “We’ve always wanted to write about that anyway\,” says Katz\, “and it was the perfect\, wacky blues riff to write that over. I think we came up with something very special.” \n \nBadflower’s focus might be on big conversations but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to turn their attention to less weighty subjects too. ‘Promise Me’ is the only traditional love song on the record but not even it can escape the band’s entrenched darkness. “That’s my proudest moment on the album\,” Espiritu says. “We talk about doing what we want and what the spirit of rock and roll is\, and then we have ‘Promise Me’\, which is this leftfield\, beautiful\, romantic love song\, and we’re able to spin it and make it our own.” The making it their own\, Katz explains\, involves one of the song’s characters meeting their maker. \n \nProduced with Noah Shain (Atreyu\, Dead Sara)\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ represents a band full of ideas and submerged in the most modern of sounds. The band’s intention was to make the most 2018 album they possibly could\, unfazed by the idea it could sound dated a few years down the line. “Timeless music is amazing but everybody’s trying so hard to make timeless music that they’re making vague\, cookie-cutter shit\,” Katz says. “It sounds like everything else and I don’t think there’s really many rock bands who are trying to write anything current. We wanted to make something for this generation.” \n \nYou might have realised by now this band isn’t one to limit themselves. “We don’t even consider ourselves a rock band\,” Katz says defiantly. “If we decide to put out a rap album next week\, we’re gonna do it. Watch us. We don’t fucking care. We do what we want. Rock and roll used to be about that spirit and that got lost somewhere.” You can count on Badflower to put it right back in the heart of things\, whether anyone else likes it or not.

SUMMARY:The Duhks - 20th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Duhks: 20th Anniversary Concert – Saturday\, May 14\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nIn the twenty years since their inception\, many have tried to describe The Duhks’ music– “contemporary acoustic\,” “progressive soul-grass\,” and “kick-ass rock/folk fusion” being just a few of the attempts to classify the group who would go on to be nominated for a Grammy award and 4 Juno awards\, one of which won for Best Roots & Traditional album in 2005\, perform over a thousand shows in 12 countries. \nFormed in 2002 from a collection of accomplished folk nerds who met through the adventures of Leonard Podolak and his former band Scruj MacDuhk and who all just couldn’t get enough of mashing up genres from the Appalachian mountains\, French Canada\, Cuba\, Brazil\, Ireland\, Scotland and Louisiana. Their unique brand of entertainment fuses driving sets of tunes and soaring vocals with danceability and great songwriting that will make you want to follow them around the globe to every folk festival. Back to the original lineup\, they are ready to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album\, Your Daughters & Your Sons. \nDespite a rotating cast of talented musicians in the last decade\, The Duhks stayed a 5-piece band with no bass player; a highly unusual choice that has worked because of the innovation of founding member and innovative luthier Jordan McConnell\, who modified his guitar to allow a deep bassline to emanate in addition to the rich tone of his natural sounding guitar channel. \nPaired brilliantly with his intricate Irish and Punk-inspired guitar playing is percussionist Scott Senior’s pounding polyrhythms on; congas\, cajon\, bongo and cymbals meant to be hit with a hand\, not a stick. Jessee Havey stands in the middle; a striking\, soulful singer up front\, awash in tattoos\, cooing\, crying and shouting like a punk rock-era Gladys Knight–or India.Arie. The way the salsa and soul organically intertwine with Leonard’s Old-time banjo and Tania Elizabeth’s inimitable fiddle only underscores that this band is essentially something else again\, with sounds of their own making\, still working a potent new North American vein of World Music. \nWith the revival of the original lineup\, longtime fans can expect to hear their favorite Duhks songs sung with a lot of joy onstage and guest appearances by former members whenever possible. Tour dates will be coming soon. \n“Canada’s premier neo-tradsters romp from world-beat to blues\, urban-pop to old-timey\, with wild-eyed invention\, haunting traditionalism\, and spine-rattling groove. GRAMMY nominees and JUNO award winners\, seeing The Duhks live is nothing short of a spiritual experience. A syncopated bluesy banjo number seamlessly follows a Brazilian samba; an old-time jaunt nestles comfortably next to a gospel performance. One of the most musically adventurous bands to come from the roots scene in the past decade\, The Duhks return to the stage is definitely a cause for celebration.” – The Boston Globe

SUMMARY:Royal Canoe
DESCRIPTION:Royal Canoe – ‘Sidelining’ Album Release Show – April 29\, 2022\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nYou’re having a bit of a year\, aren’t you? I mean\, that’s kind of a silly question\, because we’re all having a bit of a year – this is just a strange time to be alive – but you’re in over your head. Sure\, you made the necessary adjustments. You bought a bread making kit. You did yoga twice. You got a Zoom-pro account. And yet\, for some reason\, that third re-watch of The Wire just isn’t hitting right. Then\, all of a sudden\, one of those rogue anxiety-waves comes crashing through your brain fog. You realize that you’ve been spinning in a dozen different overlapping whirlpools. Your work feels joyless and irrelevant. Your relationship is complicated. Everyday the world somehow out-clusterfucks itself. You can’t sleep. You look in the mirror and you’re kinda gross. You’re scrolling and scrolling\, watching the goddamn Joneses be as busy as ever. Your body aches in weird new ways. And then\, suddenly\, the existential threats start to pile on\, and it’s like\, “OK.. I need to take a minute here…” And that’s when you remember that this isn’t your first rodeo. You take a breath and you tell yourself that you can only control the controllables. Maybe be less of a jerk in your relationships. Try exercising. Read a book. You have friends – lean on them. But also support them\, and those around you who need it. And take care of yourself\, too\, because it’s not necessarily going to get any easier. You step outside for a moment. There’s music playing. The air feels kind. You’re sitting on the stoop watching all that sun shining. \nRoyal Canoe would never be characterized as having taken the simple\, prescribed path over the past decade. This almost stubborn fascination with finding “the long way around” has resulted in a rich catalog of albums\, EPs\, videos and experimental live-shows that are as adventurous in their process as they are in their creativity. Whether it’s releasing radio-singles in 5/4 time\, performing concerts on instruments made of ice\, adamantly dragging their multiple-drum-set\, six-keyboard\, live-setup around the world in their van and trailer\, or their various outrageous schemes to stay connected to their fans\, Royal Canoe have stuck around because they’ve never lost sight of what drives them – the exhilaration that comes with the opportunity to do something completely new. \nSo when they began working on their latest album Sidelining (out July 9th\, 2021 on Paper Bag and Birthday Cake Records) at Private Ear Studios there was one rule: no song-nuggets or lyrical ideas from before. No demos you came up with last week that you brought to the band. Everything would be built and completed that day. Less second-guessing\, more music making. \n“We booked studio time\, set up and mic’d all of our gear and then just pressed record and tried to let things happen\,” says singer Matt Peters. “This is pretty much the complete opposite approach to how we made our previous three albums\, where everything was very planned ahead of time. I think at first it felt like this arbitrary test of limitations that might go disastrously\, but then we learned to trust ourselves\, and follow the ideas as they came\, whether it was a drum part\, or a chord progression\, or a recorder solo. It was really refreshing to capture these ideas in real-time as we were discovering them\, and watch these songs start to materialize.” \nThe result is an album that\, at times\, aches with the undeniable tensions of the past year. But above all\, the songs are an attempt at being raw and honest communicators. They throw up a mirror to challenge old ways. They are cries to tear down the familiar and build it back better. \nRoyal Canoe’s musical journey has taken them around the world and into projects they never dreamed of. They’ve played over 500 shows from Kiev to California\, toured with Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club and hit major festivals like Bonaroo\, Iceland Airwaves and Osheaga. Their records have received critical acclaim: a nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the Junos\, winning Best Independent Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards and love from music-press and devoted fans the world over. They’ve written and performed a musical version of Shakespeare’s Richard II\, performed their sophomore album backed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and built a concert from Beck’s sheet-music only album Song Reader at Winnipeg’s prestigious New Music Festival. Most recently\, Royal Canoe performed an outdoor winter concert to more than 5000 attendees featuring re-imagined versions of their songs using only instruments made of ice harvested from local rivers and ponds.
