They don’t care whether you get what they’re doing\, because their thoroughly modern rock is more ahead of the curve than anyone else you might try and pigeonhole them with. And they really don’t care whether you like the messages in their songs\, because what they sing about is important\, if uncomfortable. \n \nThat attitude might seem misguided for a band who have yet to release their debut album. In this age where music’s money comes largely from touring\, fans are more important than ever – they’re the ones who buy the tickets to shows and ultimately give artists the opportunity to keep playing and progressing. But the LA four-piece aren’t complete beginners – since forming in 2013\, frontman Josh Katz\, guitarist Joey Morrow\, drummer Anthony Sonetti\, and bassist Alex Espiritu have toured relentlessly across the US and beyond\, building up a reputation as a formidable live force as well as an ever-growing mass of loyal followers and praise from the likes of Billboard\, Forbes\, and Consequence Of Sound. \n \nThough the band credit their years of gigging with giving them the life experience to write their debut album\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’\, it’s also had its downsides\, especially for Katz. The singer and guitarist suffers from anxiety and panic disorder – something that he’s had to learn how to cope with on the road. “I once ran off stage mid-song and just had to take a beat and was very confused\,” he says\, offering an example of how the problem can affect him. “I wasn’t sure if I should be throwing up or sitting down. Typically\, it’s just clenching every muscle in my body until it hopefully goes away. I can barely stand up\, barely get notes out. It’s all of these feelings at once.” \n \nIt’s that problem that inspired ‘Ghost’\, the band’s big breakthrough single. After coming home from tour\, Katz was so fed up with what he had to go through to get on stage every night\, he was in two minds whether to carry on with music. “If I’m miserable every night\, why am I doing it?” he asked himself. It was that song\, which reached the top of the US charts\, that saved Badflower. \n \nDespite its success\, the group was initially sceptical about it being more than an album track. In its often graphic lyrics\, Katz plays out a dark\, suicidal fantasy – “This life is overwhelming and I’m ready for the next one\,” he sighs resignedly at one point. They worried listeners would think they were glorifying suicide\, cynically using a very real and serious problem for their own gain. “But people got it immediately and we realised how many people are affected by depression\, panic disorder\, and anxiety issues\,” Katz explains. “You hear about it all the time\, you see it on every commercial – there’s some anti-depressant being sold to you because everybody has these issues – but people don’t like to talk about it that much.” \n \nWhile ‘Ghost’ is a somewhat harrowing take on mental health issues\, not all of ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ is as serious. Opener ‘x ANA x’ (inspired in part by Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre documentary The Defiant Ones) tackles a similar topic but with a far more sardonic tone. An ode to the helpful qualities of Xanax\, it’s eyebrow-raising\, incredibly self-aware and rife with meta moments (in one breakdown Katz cheerily asks: “Hey\, wanna see what happens when I mix Xanax\, blow\, and a MacBook Pro?”). Along with the constantly changing music – be it speeding up\, stuttering almost to the brink of collapse\, or weaving even more claustrophobic layers together – it adds up to something completely manic. \n \n“The whole song is meant to feel like a panic attack – unexplained chaos happening within you\,” Katz says. “We wrote that song together and then I took what we had to our house in the desert and stayed awake all night and\, like a mad scientist\, destroyed everything and chopped it up. I didn’t feel like it was manic enough. It’s making fun of anxiety but it’s also making fun of itself.” \n \nAs a band with plenty to say\, mental health isn’t the only message Badflower share on their debut. ‘Murder Games’ is the album’s most intense and urgent sounding cut\, metallic\, guillotine-esque swishes entwined with a punishing guitar line that sets you on edge. Its lyrics speak about veganism (Katz has been vegan for four years) in uncompromising terms. “That’s gonna alienate our band like crazy\,” the frontman shrugs\, unbothered. “We think it’s something important that needs to be talked about so we’re gonna talk about it. It’s about getting the conversation started. It’s about getting people to look at it in a different way and not be so passive about the idea that something in society that you grew up hearing was right might not be as right as you think.” \n \n‘Die’ also has the potential to cause controversy. Partly a damning assessment of Trump’s position on the environment (Morrow is keen to point out the President is not the only target of the song)\, it features Katz screaming the title as if his own life depends on it. But his sentiment is not what you might immediately assume. “It doesn’t mean\, ‘Hey\, go get murdered’ or ‘I’m gonna kill you’\,” he clarifies. “It’s more all of those people who are so stuck in their ways\, who are afraid of change and afraid of evolution\, need to get old and die off so the next generation can come up and make some change and do something good.” Despite first appearances\, it’s intended as a statement of progression. “We’re meant to move forward\, not stagnate\,” Espiritu notes. \n \nElsewhere\, the album navigates subjects like abuse (‘Daddy’)\, depression in the face of success (’24’)\, and social media stalking (‘Girlfriend’). The latter merges old and new\, layering lyrics about Instagram filters and the internet over a big blues-rock jam. “We’ve always wanted to write about that anyway\,” says Katz\, “and it was the perfect\, wacky blues riff to write that over. I think we came up with something very special.” \n \nBadflower’s focus might be on big conversations but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to turn their attention to less weighty subjects too. ‘Promise Me’ is the only traditional love song on the record but not even it can escape the band’s entrenched darkness. “That’s my proudest moment on the album\,” Espiritu says. “We talk about doing what we want and what the spirit of rock and roll is\, and then we have ‘Promise Me’\, which is this leftfield\, beautiful\, romantic love song\, and we’re able to spin it and make it our own.” The making it their own\, Katz explains\, involves one of the song’s characters meeting their maker. \n \nProduced with Noah Shain (Atreyu\, Dead Sara)\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ represents a band full of ideas and submerged in the most modern of sounds. The band’s intention was to make the most 2018 album they possibly could\, unfazed by the idea it could sound dated a few years down the line. “Timeless music is amazing but everybody’s trying so hard to make timeless music that they’re making vague\, cookie-cutter shit\,” Katz says. “It sounds like everything else and I don’t think there’s really many rock bands who are trying to write anything current. We wanted to make something for this generation.” \n \nYou might have realised by now this band isn’t one to limit themselves. “We don’t even consider ourselves a rock band\,” Katz says defiantly. “If we decide to put out a rap album next week\, we’re gonna do it. Watch us. We don’t fucking care. We do what we want. Rock and roll used to be about that spirit and that got lost somewhere.” You can count on Badflower to put it right back in the heart of things\, whether anyone else likes it or not.

DESCRIPTION:Brent Parkin is a legend of the Winnipeg music scene and has been playing for audiences in Winnipeg and across Canada for over 50 years.\n\n\nBrent Parkin is a veteran of the Winnipeg music scene and has been playing for audiences in Winnipeg and across Canada for over 50 years. \nBrent’s music is a mix of Chicago style Blues\, Swing\, Roots music with some Country and Roots Rock and Roll thrown in for good measure. He is comfortable playing with his band whether it be a 3 piece or up to 7 piece\, solo or duo.  \nCheck out YouTube for videos including a performance with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra 20 piece band or his solo version of Kingfish Blues. \nIn the early 70’s he co-founded several popular blues bands including the popular band Houndog in 1976. \nIn the last 43 years he has been part of the backup bands for such legends as Bo Diddley\, Gatemouth Brown\, Otis Rush\, Billy Boy Arnold\, Johnnie Johnson and Jimmy T99 Nelson and many more. As well as opening shows for such greats as James Cotton\, Johnny Winter\, Buddy Guy\, John Prine just to name a few. A career highlight was sharing the tour bus and stage with BB King and his band as his opening act on a Western Canadian tour in 1983. \nBrent has played many bars and nightclubs over the years. Some of the famous and legendary night clubs in Canada include: \nYale Hotel – Vancouver \nKing Eddy – Calgary \nBlues on Whyte – Edmonton \nBuds on Broadway – Saskatoon \nWindsor Hotel – Winnipeg \nAmbassador Hotel – Edmonton \nSilver Dollar – Toronto \n \nBrent has also played many concerts and festivals over the years including: \nWinnipeg Folk Festival \nEdmonton Folk Festival \nVancouver Folk Festival \nSaskatoon Jazz Festival \nWinnipeg Jazz Festival \nHarbourfront Blues Festival Toronto \nWinnipeg Blues and BBQ Festival \nBlues Brews and BBQ Kitchener \nLabatt’s Blues Festival Edmonton \n \nNumerous appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival also made it possible for Brent to play and share many workshop stages with a lot of great artists over the years. This experience has come in handy when doing shows in schools and such. \nOver the years he has appeared on many TV and radio shows. Some of the most memorable were 90 Minutes Live CBC with Peter Gzowski. Jimmy King Presents CTV’s Live at the Warehouse. \nHis original songs “Goodbye Canadian Penny” and “Brown Water Blues” were also featured on CBC Radio Up To Speed Winnipeg and CBC National Radio As It Happens in 2012 – 2013. \nIn 2008 Brent appeared in the highly successful play Mesa for the Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg\, providing the musical landscape\, singing and acting. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nIn the twenty years since their inception\, many have tried to describe The Duhks’ music– “contemporary acoustic\,” “progressive soul-grass\,” and “kick-ass rock/folk fusion” being just a few of the attempts to classify the group who would go on to be nominated for a Grammy award and 4 Juno awards\, one of which won for Best Roots & Traditional album in 2005\, perform over a thousand shows in 12 countries. \nFormed in 2002 from a collection of accomplished folk nerds who met through the adventures of Leonard Podolak and his former band Scruj MacDuhk and who all just couldn’t get enough of mashing up genres from the Appalachian mountains\, French Canada\, Cuba\, Brazil\, Ireland\, Scotland and Louisiana. Their unique brand of entertainment fuses driving sets of tunes and soaring vocals with danceability and great songwriting that will make you want to follow them around the globe to every folk festival. Back to the original lineup\, they are ready to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album\, Your Daughters & Your Sons. \nDespite a rotating cast of talented musicians in the last decade\, The Duhks stayed a 5-piece band with no bass player; a highly unusual choice that has worked because of the innovation of founding member and innovative luthier Jordan McConnell\, who modified his guitar to allow a deep bassline to emanate in addition to the rich tone of his natural sounding guitar channel.  \nPaired brilliantly with his intricate Irish and Punk-inspired guitar playing is percussionist Scott Senior’s pounding polyrhythms on; congas\, cajon\, bongo and cymbals meant to be hit with a hand\, not a stick. Jessee Havey stands in the middle; a striking\, soulful singer up front\, awash in tattoos\, cooing\, crying and shouting like a punk rock-era Gladys Knight–or India.Arie. I mean\, that’s kind of a silly question\, because we’re all having a bit of a year – this is just a strange time to be alive – but you’re in over your head. Sure\, you made the necessary adjustments. You bought a bread making kit. You did yoga twice. You got a Zoom-pro account. And yet\, for some reason\, that third re-watch of The Wire just isn’t hitting right. Then\, all of a sudden\, one of those rogue anxiety-waves comes crashing through your brain fog. You realize that you’ve been spinning in a dozen different overlapping whirlpools. Your work feels joyless and irrelevant. Your relationship is complicated. Everyday the world somehow out-clusterfucks itself. You can’t sleep. You look in the mirror and you’re kinda gross. You’re scrolling and scrolling\, watching the goddamn Joneses be as busy as ever. Your body aches in weird new ways. And then\, suddenly\, the existential threats start to pile on\, and it’s like\, “OK.. I need to take a minute here…” And that’s when you remember that this isn’t your first rodeo. You take a breath and you tell yourself that you can only control the controllables. Maybe be less of a jerk in your relationships. Try exercising. Read a book. You have friends – lean on them. But also support them\, and those around you who need it. And take care of yourself\, too\, because it’s not necessarily going to get any easier. You step outside for a moment. There’s music playing. The air feels kind. You’re sitting on the stoop watching all that sun shining.  \nRoyal Canoe would never be characterized as having taken the simple\, prescribed path over the past decade. This almost stubborn fascination with finding “the long way around” has resulted in a rich catalog of albums\, EPs\, videos and experimental live-shows that are as adventurous in their process as they are in their creativity. Whether it’s releasing radio-singles in 5/4 time\, performing concerts on instruments made of ice\, adamantly dragging their multiple-drum-set\, six-keyboard\, live-setup around the world in their van and trailer\, or their various outrageous schemes to stay connected to their fans\, Royal Canoe have stuck around because they’ve never lost sight of what drives them – the exhilaration that comes with the opportunity to do something completely new. \nSo when they began working on their latest album Sidelining (out July 9th\, 2021 on Paper Bag and Birthday Cake Records) at Private Ear Studios there was one rule: no song-nuggets or lyrical ideas from before. No demos you came up with last week that you brought to the band. Everything would be built and completed that day. Less second-guessing\, more music making.  \n“We booked studio time\, set up and mic’d all of our gear and then just pressed record and tried to let things happen\,” says singer Matt Peters. “This is pretty much the complete opposite approach to how we made our previous three albums\, where everything was very planned ahead of time. I think at first it felt like this arbitrary test of limitations that might go disastrously\, but then we learned to trust ourselves\, and follow the ideas as they came\, whether it was a drum part\, or a chord progression\, or a recorder solo. It was really refreshing to capture these ideas in real-time as we were discovering them\, and watch these songs start to materialize.”  \nThe result is an album that\, at times\, aches with the undeniable tensions of the past year. But above all\, the songs are an attempt at being raw and honest communicators. They throw up a mirror to challenge old ways. They are cries to tear down the familiar and build it back better. \nRoyal Canoe’s musical journey has taken them around the world and into projects they never dreamed of. They’ve played over 500 shows from Kiev to California\, toured with Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club and hit major festivals like Bonaroo\, Iceland Airwaves and Osheaga. Their records have received critical acclaim: a nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the Junos\, winning Best Independent Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards and love from music-press and devoted fans the world over. They’ve written and performed a musical version of Shakespeare’s Richard II\, performed their sophomore album backed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and built a concert from Beck’s sheet-music only album Song Reader at Winnipeg’s prestigious New Music Festival. Most recently\, Royal Canoe performed an outdoor winter concert to more than 5000 attendees featuring re-imagined versions of their songs using only instruments made of ice harvested from local rivers and ponds.

Get swooned. \n \nGabriela Ocejo \n \nGabriela Ocejo is an Argentine-born\, Treaty 1-based guitarist and songwriter. Raised in a musical family\, Gabi’s father\, guitarist Guillermo Ocejo was a major influence to her love of music and artistry\, introducing her to Jazz\, Tango and Argentinean Folklore. Gabi continued honing her craft playing with her talented hometown musician friends in Buenos Aires and Bahia Blanca\, as she bounced back and forth between the continents. \n \nDecidedly relocating to Winnipeg in 2011\, Gabi became immersed in the local arts and cultural community.  Her range in style\, gift in songwriting and tasteful arrangements quickly made Gabi a mainstay of Winnipeg music scene\, effortlessly collaborating with some of the city’s best musicians across a range of styles including all-female Jazz Manouche band\, Juvel; 7-piece traditional swing band\, Sunny Roseland; folk-roots songwriter and Crooked Brother\, Matt Foster; and Polaris Prize-nominated 8-piece live hip-hop ensemble\, Super Duty Tough Work. \n \nRecently\, Gabi has started her own project\, showcasing her skill as a songwriter and arranger. Gabi’s music blends her love for R&B\, jazz\, pop and neo soul\, with lyrics that earnestly examine the joy\, pain and neurosis of contemporary city living. With a series of EPs on the horizon\, Gabi’s band features Ashley Au\, Holly Stratton and Kevin Waters.

He has been active on the international jazz scene for two decades. At 17\, Will joined Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau Band for a world tour\, which included performances in Europe\, Thailand\, and the Caribbean. He has performed at many of the major jazz festivals in Canada and the United States\, as well as in the world’s most prestigious venues\, with such luminaries as Jon Gordon\, Avishai Cohen\, Quincy Davis\, Jimmy Greene\, and Derrick Gardner. Locally\, he can often be seen performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra\, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra.  \n \n     Will has three releases to his credit: Subtle Fire (2009)\, Halcyon (2016)\, and Change of Plans (2020). He has appeared as an accompanist on almost 30 albums\, many of which have been nominated for or won JUNO and Western Canada Music Awards. Change of Plans has received international critical acclaim and nearly one million streams on Spotify.
