SUMMARY:Leaf Rapids on the West End Neighbourhood Patio
DESCRIPTION:Leaf Rapids on the West End Neighbourhood Patio – Saturday\, June 11\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nIt started the way all good things do\, with a story\, one that emerged from the time-shrouded attics of Keri Latimer’s family history. A tale of the great-grandmother she knew only as tiny and soft-spoken\, a gentle soul who only spoke Japanese. Who would have guessed that once\, in her youth\, that same little old lady stabbed a man with a pair of barbershop shears? \nThat tale became the torch to light a new journey. As the years turned\, Keri plunged into the depths of her family’s ancestral memories\, resurfacing with stories like jewels that had been tucked away and forgotten. These she polished and kept safe\, waiting until it was time to hold their colours up to the light once more. \nNow\, all of those stories come together on Citizen Alien\, the brand-new sophomore album from Winnipeg folk duo Leaf Rapids. The project is a labour of love for Keri and her husband\, Devin Latimer. Through their own family’s stories they created a new world from the old\, delving into the intimate truths told by voices from decades long gone.

SUMMARY:The Honeysliders
DESCRIPTION:Take one part dirty country\, one part honest\, prairie vocals\, and one part party-rock band and you get…The Honeysliders.\n\n\nThe Honeysliders Long Bio \n \nAn all-star cast of Winnipeg’s music scene mvps\, the Honeysliders are the ultimate house band. Whether it’s dirt-road country growls\, angst-ridden back-porch blues\, whiskey-soaked party-rock or just honest prairie vocals\, The Honeysliders will deliver. \n \nFounding members\, Jamie Buckboro(lead vocals/guitar/percussion) and Micah Bell(bass guitar/vocals) together with master keyboardist\, Alex Campballse(keyboard/Whurlitzer/harmonica/vocals)\, multi-talented Winnipeg drummer\, Jesse Millar(percussion/guitar/vocals)\, and local guitar icon\, Chris ‘Chopper’ Carmichael (guitar/vocals/percussion)\, The Honeysliders have branded an undeniably kinetic sound. \n \nThriving on the challenge of tributes to their music heroes – CSNY\, The Band\, Neil Young\, the Beatles\, The Rolling Stones – and Canadian contemporaries – Sloan\, Terra Lightfoot\, The Sheepdogs – their performances teleport to a time when live bootlegs and curated albums ruled turntables and airwaves. \nBorn from these eclectic influences\, their original songs elevate them above mere cover-band status and threaten to rattle the rafters with shout-along anthemic camaraderie. The Honeysliders are currently compiling material for their first full-length album release… \n \nSo put an arm around your partner-in-crime and raise a cup to hometown pride because any member of this band can step forward and break your heart or blow your mind.

SUMMARY:Scott Nolan 'The Suburb Beautiful' Album Release with Glenn Buhr
DESCRIPTION:Scott Nolan with Glenn Buhr and Orchestra – Sunday\, June 12\, 2022 at 2:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nScott Nolan is a songwriter\, poet\, multi instrumentalist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba Treaty One Territory. His songs have been recorded by Hayes Carll\, Mary Gauthier\, Watermelon Slim\, and Corin Raymond among others. He has recently produced albums for William Prince\, Lynne Hanson\, and Watermelon Slim. \nIn January 2015 he started writing poetry\, approximately three weeks after his 40th birthday. The plan was to replace smoking cigarettes with walking eight to ten kilometres a day. He is a songwriter by trade and often discovered melodies and rhythms in the shuffling of his feet. He spends most of his time thinking about words\, music\, and language. Nolan found myself writing short poems based on people and places in his neighbourhood\, trying to capture a bit of what was happening around him. \nAn older cousin of his discovered a gift and passion for poetry while serving time in Folsom State Prison. He was an early influence on him\, sending books and letters from prison and encouraging the younger Nolan to read and write as often as possible. This relationship was the subject of a documentary last year called Visiting Day\, produced for the CBC by filmmaker Charles Konowal. He was invited to perform and host writing workshops in the very same prison library his cousin wrote to him from all those years ago. \nThe late Winnipeg poet Patrick O’Connell was also a dear friend and mentor. Patrick is one of his favourite contemporary Canadian poets. His was a lyrical style that had a strong impact on his early songwriting. One of the many benefits of working in the arts community in Winnipeg is the quality of work of his peers. It’s consistently encouraging and inspiring. After more than a decade of relentless touring\, he decided to take a year or so away from the road to collaborate\, produce records\, and enjoy his life in Winnipeg. A play was produced through Manitoba Theatre Projects based on the nine albums he has released since 2003. The play\, I Dream of Diesel\, enjoyed a two week run of sold-out shows and critical praise from both the community and critic. \n—– \nGlenn Buhr is a composer\, pianist/guitarist\, music curator and producer\, songwriter and band leader. He became well known in Canada in the mid-80’s when the Toronto and Montreal Symphony Orchestras first championed his work\, and in the mid-90’s as front man – with conductor Bramwell Tovey – of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival. He was Composer-in-Residence with the WSO and curator of the New Music Festival from 1990 to 1996. \nBuhr has received commissions from many important performers and ensembles including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra\, the Penderecki String Quartet\, the Detroit Contemporary Chamber Ensemble\, the Verdi String Quartet\, pianist Janina Fialkowska\, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, the Toronto Children’s Chorus and the Esprit Orchestra. His music has been performed all over the world by such diverse ensembles as the London Sinfonia\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the BBC Symphony\, the National Arts Centre Orchestra\, pianist Louis Lortie\, soprano Tracy Dahl and many others. His 3rd Symphony (a choral symphony) was premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in February 2008 with pop singer Sarah Slean as soloist. \nBuhr performed as soloist at the premiere of his jazz-oriented Piano Concerto no. 2 with the Esprit Orchestra in March 2006. The work was remounted by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in February 2008\, again with the composer at the piano. He’s toured Canada twice as a jazz artist (pianist/composer)\, and he released his 3rd jazz CD in March 2007 on the Marquis label. He works with novelist/playwright/lyricist Margaret Sweatman as musical director of their group The Broken Songs Band; that ensemble released its second CD in the fall of 2010. Sweatman and Buhr won a Genie Award for their song When Wintertime from the film Seven Times Lucky. \nIn 2003\, his full length ballet Beauty and the Beast was premiered by the Birmingham Royal Ballet in Birmingham\, England. The work has since toured the UK three times for a total of more than 125 performances. The ballet has also toured to Hong Kong (2005)\, Japan (2008) and to mainland China in 2009. He has also composed a number of scores for film and theatre and has collaborated on several other dance projects. Glenn Buhr’s work and his performances are featured regularly on the CBC. His book Our Native Song – a collection of essays on music – was published in May 2013. \nDr. Buhr is Professor of Music Composition and Improvisation in the Contemporary Music Program at Wilfrid Laurier University. In 1998 he was awarded the University Research Professor Fellowship at Wilfrid Laurier University; it was the first time that the award was given to a creative artist. He is also the founding Artistic Director of the Music
in the Ruins Festival at the St. Norbert Arts Centre in Manitoba and the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony’s New Orchestra Series. He was the Artistic Director of NUMUS Concerts in Kitchener-Waterloo from 2009 to 2013. \n—– \nScott & Glenn will be joined on stage by Paul Balcain\, Gilles Fournier\, Joanna Miller\, and the Penderecki String Quartet.

SUMMARY:Ocean Alley
DESCRIPTION:The Park Theatre Presents\n\n\nOcean Alley \nw/ Le Shiv \nMonday\, June 20th\, 2022 \nTickets $25 adv plus Fees \n_____ \nInfused with their classic sun-drenched sound and infectious groove\, ‘Touch Back Down’ is a story about turning a negative into a positive\, and always finding the light side of a problem. It was written during a last-minute writing session in Byron Bay\, which only came to be after Bluesfest was cancelled at the eleventh hour in April this year. \nBoppy from its opening bars\, the track features an intoxicating sing-along melody that paired with swirling guitars and shimmering keys\, create a warmth and brightness that feels like summer. It builds to an emphatic chorus where frontman Baden Donegal’s soaring vocals shine\, and are punctuated by stunning harmonized backing vocals. \nOn the new single\, Baden shared “It’s exciting to have new music out. The more records we write\, the more we can explore our sound and style\, which is why they are ever-changing. ‘Touch Back Down’ gives a much happier vibe than any single from Lonely Diamond and we’re definitely carrying that upbeat energy across our writing at the moment. It provides a pretty good insight into the feel we’re going for in terms of our next record.” \nGuitarist Mitch Galbraith added\, “It feels more playful than Lonely Diamond and we wanted it to be that way. After the craziness of the past two years\, we wanted to be less serious and write songs that will get people moving rather than thinking. We felt that we could write music this time around that is less introspective and with a little more storytelling\, so this is the first taste of the new direction that our fourth album will offer.” \nFrom Northern Beaches dive bars to sold out international tours\, Ocean Alley’s evolution has been driven by an endless pursuit to push their sound and abilities to new limits. Operating as a proudly independent band\, their output has always been underscored by a refreshingly chilled authenticity and relatability that has seen them achieve more than 450 million catalogue streams. \nSince the release of their Gold-certified breakthrough Chiaroscuro (2018) which saw the band take the #1 spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2018 for their double platinum smash ‘Confidence\,’ the six-piece have performed major festivals including Reading & Leeds (UK)\, Splendour In The Grass (AUS) and Sziget (HU)\, debuted at #3 on the ARIA charts for their critically acclaimed 2020 album Lonely Diamond\, have received Gold certification on five singles and been nominated for 2 ARIA Awards.

SUMMARY:Men I Trust
DESCRIPTION:Live Nation Presents Men I Trust\n\n\nSunday\, February 13th\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm \n \nHear ye\, hear ye! We are super thrilled to announce that we will resume touring in N. America this fall for the release of our new and fourth album called “The Untourable Album”. We started working on this album amidst the global lockdown and didn’t expect to be able to “tour” these songs. We wanted to take the opportunity to work on new and different material\, without necessarily intending to play these songs live. We wrote freely as if we were suspended in time with no external attachments. The initial release date had to be delayed\, however\, when Dragos got into a motorcycle accident and had to recover for several weeks. So here we are now\, almost ready to release the album\, while everything is slowly reopening and the lockdown seems to be a thing of the past. It looks like the “Untourable Album” will be tourable after all! We are still in the process of polishing the songs and doing the last tweaks before the album is ready. We will have an official release date super soon\, stay tuned. Thank you for your ongoing support and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone again in real life! \n \nhttps://menitrust.bandcamp.com/merch \nhttps://www.instagram.com/menitrust/

SUMMARY:The Highway Company
DESCRIPTION:The Highway Company\, with special guests Brandon Post\, and more!\n\n\nUnforgiving Prairie winters seem to have a knack for producing some of Canada’s best musical exports. Known for their rich four-part harmonies and unique take on the Americana/Rock N’ Roll genre\, The Highway Company aim to continue Winnipeg’s fine tradition\, both honoring the past and creating something brand new. \nAfter several years of honing their craft\, 2019 saw the band embark on a three-month Canadian/US tour in support of The Tea Party. Their single “Company” was a hit on Sirius XM’s North Americana\, where it remains in rotation today. As the pandemic wore on\, The Highway Company slowly built their own recording studio\, and the new songs that come with it. “We were forced to reevaluate everything. Nothing in life is guaranteed\, may as well be true to yourself and enjoy it\,” says bassist Jesse Meyer. THC is rounded out by his brother Kyle Meyer (guitar\, vocals)\, Jay Stanley (guitar\, keys\, vocals)\, Jay Mymryk (drums) and Ryan McConnell (vocals\, guitar). \n \n2022 is a bit of a new start for everyone and everything\, so armed with a new name\, new songs\, and a new ethos\, watch for a lot of new The Highway Company music on your favorite streaming service this year.

SUMMARY:The Wooden Sky / Shred Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Shred Kelly and The Wooden Sky join forces for a very special downtown Winnipeg double bill at Blue Note Park!\n\n\nSHRED KELLY \nShred Kelly is a five piece\, alternative folk rock band that emerged from the heart of the Canadian Rockies in 2009. Over the past decade the band have taken their highly energetic live show from humble beginnings on the Canadian ski-town circuit to the international stage. \nThe band’s striking and energy-packed sound has evolved from their eclectic musical influences and their unique experiences as individuals. Their progressive pairing of acoustic instrumentation with electric counterparts\, harmonies\, and driving rhythm\, continues to develop and reach new heights. \nOver the years\, Shred Kelly has had the opportunity to perform across Canada and internationally at festivals such as Reeperbahn Festival\, Australian Music Week\, Folk Alliance\, and SXSW. \nOn Shred Kelly’s fifth album\, Like a Rising Sun – Deluxe Version\, one can sense a change of direction for the group as if life has taken a sharp turn for the Fernie\, BC based alternative-folk rockers. From the first strum of “Rising Sun” to the dissonant fadeout of “Disconnect”\, a fast paced and emotional album is laid out through 11 tracks that tell of major life upheaval in rapidly changing times. Written mostly in 2019 when lead singers/songwriters Tim Newton and Sage McBride welcomed their first child into the world only to lose Tim’s father to an illness one month later. The joy\, sadness and uncertainty of that time allowed for a new lease on their highly energetic music and the stories they tell. The album is woven together in the immediate aftermath with themes of love\, life\, death\, fear for the future\, and new beginnings. With three new re-imagined songs from the album added to the Deluxe Version\, it shows the grass roots and softer side of the band. \nSince the album’s release\, Shred Kelly has received positive reviews in Canada and internationally\, Spotify Editorial Playlisting\, a video feature by Grant Lawerence on CBC\, International radio play\, regular rotation on Sirus XM and Radio Eins in Berlin\, and featured on Canadian alternative radio stations. The band recently opened for ‘The Dead South’ on 12 European dates in November 2021. Additionally\, in 2021 they self produced their own Tiny Concert Tour in the summer in BC & Alberta through a partnership with On The Road Productions to bring live music back. They were recently nominated for Rock Artist of the Year at The 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards. \n“Arguably the most real\, raw\, and evocative album of their burgeoning career. (Like A Rising Sun)” — Music Life Magazine \n“Like A Rising Sun is an outpouring of explosive\, fast-paced\, and anthemic folk-rock\, which I find incredibly impressive and enjoyable from beginning to end. Shred Kelly have very quickly become a new favourite band for me\, and I highly recommend you give their music a spin.” – Great Dark Wonder \n \nTHE WOODEN SKY \nThe title of The Wooden Sky’s fifth full-length album is an abridged quote from Frank Herbert’s1965 sci-fi novel\,Dune:“Survival is the ability to swim in strange water.” It’s a phrase that seems especially apt in 2017\, as many of us are still reeling from the previous year. For Gavin Gardiner\, the frontman of the Toronto-based indie rock band\, the way to understand and reconcile these unknowns — from oil pipelines and refugee crises to his own family’s personal history — is through songwriting. “It’s how I filter a lot of things that come in\,” says Gardiner\, as he walks through the residential streets of Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood. “For better or for worse\, it’s how I deal with things and how I communicate my feelings.” \nSwimming in Strange Waters is Gardiner trying to make sense of the world. The band (made up of Gardiner\, multi-instrumentalists Simon Walker and Andrew Wyatt\,violinist Edwin Huizinga and drummer Andrew Kekewich) started writing and recording demos in a small farmhouse in rural Quebec in January 2015\, but then put them aside as they embarked on a year-long tour in support of their previous album\, Let’s Be Ready. When they resumed work on the album in March 2016\, Gardiner says the band caught a severe case of “demoitis”\, a condition wherein “you fall in love with the scrappiness of the demos.” So rather than completely re-working them\, they decided to record the album in the same way as the demos: in Gardiner’shome studio\, using old tape machines and live off the floor. The resulting album is a sonic maelstrom that sees the band exploring unchartered waters\,where textural psychedelia inspired by the Paisley Underground movement melds into quiet\, acoustic cyclical guitar melodies\, before once again transforming into a bombastic\, Johnny Cash-esque rally against the XL Keystone pipeline in Canada. \n While Let’s Be Ready found the Wooden Sky writing a pure “rock and roll” album\, Swimming in Strange Waters sees the band experimenting once again. “I feel like we’re back on track\,” says Gardiner. John Angello (known for his work with Sonic Youth\, Dinosaur Jr. \, Phosphorescent and Kurt Vile)mixed the album at Water Music in New Jersey. Around 95 percent of it was recorded to an oldtape machine at Gardiner’s home studio\, and the rest was done at Hotel2Tango in Montreal and at a Toronto church where multi-instrumentalist Walker’s father is the Anglican minister. “Dead Horse Creek”\, which is named after the body of water that runs through Gardiner’shometown of Morden\, Manitoba\, creates a layered soundscape with backward guitar\, easygoingharmonica and a crooning slide guitar that all erupt in a foot-stomping\, rollicking jam; “BlackGold”\, inspired by the Keystone XL pipeline protests\, features a 16-person choir\, a VelvetUndergroundesquescreaching violin undertone by band member Edwin Huizinga\, and Gardener embracing a lower register for the first time; “Riding on the Wind” tells stories about refugee families Gardiner met while working with Romero House\, over a bed of dreamy reverb.Meanwhile first single “Swimming in Strange Waters” glimmers like a technicolored circus with warbling synths and organs\, cyclical\, vocoder-drenched gang vocals and a spoken word interlude\, performed by The Highest Order’s Simone Schmidt reading from Herbert’s Dune Messiah. \n“More now than ever\, I feel the weight of responsibility to act and make things better for the people to come\,” says Gardiner. “Maybe that sounds cliche\, but it feels very real now. As an artist\, you have your voice\, and not much else. So you gotta use it.” \n On every album\, the Wooden Sky’s aim is to somehow capture the band’s live performance\, to compress that adrenalin and vigour into a collection of songs that’ll inevitably be played through headphones and crappy computer speakers. It’s a tall order\, considering the Wooden Sky has become known for both high-energy\, sold-out rock shows and their charming\, unconventionalpop-up fgigs – like 2014’s series of three acoustic record store sets in three hours\, where they biked to each shop with instruments slung over their backs. \nSwimming in Strange Waters marks the closest the band has ever got to this coveted goal. To achieve that energy\, Gardiner had to let go of any insecurities and garner new confidence\, part of which he found after speaking with an opera singer friend and working with legendary producer\, Angello\, and part of which came from encapsulating that energy himself. “You have to give the energy that you want to get back\,” notes Gardiner. “When I’m recording\,I’m standing on a chair like I’m on stage\, wearing my boots and my sunglasses\, just trying to create this atmosphere of cacophony. How do you expect to convey that excitement if you don’t feel it? Let’s not just sit here and be bashful.”
