SUMMARY:The Highway Company
DESCRIPTION:The Highway Company\, with special guests Brandon Post\, and more!\n\n\nUnforgiving Prairie winters seem to have a knack for producing some of Canada’s best musical exports. Known for their rich four-part harmonies and unique take on the Americana/Rock N’ Roll genre\, The Highway Company aim to continue Winnipeg’s fine tradition\, both honoring the past and creating something brand new. \nAfter several years of honing their craft\, 2019 saw the band embark on a three-month Canadian/US tour in support of The Tea Party. Their single “Company” was a hit on Sirius XM’s North Americana\, where it remains in rotation today. As the pandemic wore on\, The Highway Company slowly built their own recording studio\, and the new songs that come with it. “We were forced to reevaluate everything. Nothing in life is guaranteed\, may as well be true to yourself and enjoy it\,” says bassist Jesse Meyer. THC is rounded out by his brother Kyle Meyer (guitar\, vocals)\, Jay Stanley (guitar\, keys\, vocals)\, Jay Mymryk (drums) and Ryan McConnell (vocals\, guitar). \n \n2022 is a bit of a new start for everyone and everything\, so armed with a new name\, new songs\, and a new ethos\, watch for a lot of new The Highway Company music on your favorite streaming service this year.

SUMMARY:The Wooden Sky / Shred Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Shred Kelly and The Wooden Sky join forces for a very special downtown Winnipeg double bill at Blue Note Park!\n\n\nSHRED KELLY \nShred Kelly is a five piece\, alternative folk rock band that emerged from the heart of the Canadian Rockies in 2009. Over the past decade the band have taken their highly energetic live show from humble beginnings on the Canadian ski-town circuit to the international stage. \nThe band’s striking and energy-packed sound has evolved from their eclectic musical influences and their unique experiences as individuals. Their progressive pairing of acoustic instrumentation with electric counterparts\, harmonies\, and driving rhythm\, continues to develop and reach new heights. \nOver the years\, Shred Kelly has had the opportunity to perform across Canada and internationally at festivals such as Reeperbahn Festival\, Australian Music Week\, Folk Alliance\, and SXSW. \nOn Shred Kelly’s fifth album\, Like a Rising Sun – Deluxe Version\, one can sense a change of direction for the group as if life has taken a sharp turn for the Fernie\, BC based alternative-folk rockers. From the first strum of “Rising Sun” to the dissonant fadeout of “Disconnect”\, a fast paced and emotional album is laid out through 11 tracks that tell of major life upheaval in rapidly changing times. Written mostly in 2019 when lead singers/songwriters Tim Newton and Sage McBride welcomed their first child into the world only to lose Tim’s father to an illness one month later. The joy\, sadness and uncertainty of that time allowed for a new lease on their highly energetic music and the stories they tell. The album is woven together in the immediate aftermath with themes of love\, life\, death\, fear for the future\, and new beginnings. With three new re-imagined songs from the album added to the Deluxe Version\, it shows the grass roots and softer side of the band. \nSince the album’s release\, Shred Kelly has received positive reviews in Canada and internationally\, Spotify Editorial Playlisting\, a video feature by Grant Lawerence on CBC\, International radio play\, regular rotation on Sirus XM and Radio Eins in Berlin\, and featured on Canadian alternative radio stations. The band recently opened for ‘The Dead South’ on 12 European dates in November 2021. Additionally\, in 2021 they self produced their own Tiny Concert Tour in the summer in BC & Alberta through a partnership with On The Road Productions to bring live music back. They were recently nominated for Rock Artist of the Year at The 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards. \n“Arguably the most real\, raw\, and evocative album of their burgeoning career. (Like A Rising Sun)” — Music Life Magazine \n“Like A Rising Sun is an outpouring of explosive\, fast-paced\, and anthemic folk-rock\, which I find incredibly impressive and enjoyable from beginning to end. Shred Kelly have very quickly become a new favourite band for me\, and I highly recommend you give their music a spin.” – Great Dark Wonder \n \nTHE WOODEN SKY \nThe title of The Wooden Sky’s fifth full-length album is an abridged quote from Frank Herbert’s1965 sci-fi novel\,Dune:“Survival is the ability to swim in strange water.” It’s a phrase that seems especially apt in 2017\, as many of us are still reeling from the previous year. For Gavin Gardiner\, the frontman of the Toronto-based indie rock band\, the way to understand and reconcile these unknowns — from oil pipelines and refugee crises to his own family’s personal history — is through songwriting. “It’s how I filter a lot of things that come in\,” says Gardiner\, as he walks through the residential streets of Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood. “For better or for worse\, it’s how I deal with things and how I communicate my feelings.” \nSwimming in Strange Waters is Gardiner trying to make sense of the world. The band (made up of Gardiner\, multi-instrumentalists Simon Walker and Andrew Wyatt\,violinist Edwin Huizinga and drummer Andrew Kekewich) started writing and recording demos in a small farmhouse in rural Quebec in January 2015\, but then put them aside as they embarked on a year-long tour in support of their previous album\, Let’s Be Ready. When they resumed work on the album in March 2016\, Gardiner says the band caught a severe case of “demoitis”\, a condition wherein “you fall in love with the scrappiness of the demos.” So rather than completely re-working them\, they decided to record the album in the same way as the demos: in Gardiner’shome studio\, using old tape machines and live off the floor. The resulting album is a sonic maelstrom that sees the band exploring unchartered waters\,where textural psychedelia inspired by the Paisley Underground movement melds into quiet\, acoustic cyclical guitar melodies\, before once again transforming into a bombastic\, Johnny Cash-esque rally against the XL Keystone pipeline in Canada. \n While Let’s Be Ready found the Wooden Sky writing a pure “rock and roll” album\, Swimming in Strange Waters sees the band experimenting once again. “I feel like we’re back on track\,” says Gardiner. John Angello (known for his work with Sonic Youth\, Dinosaur Jr. \, Phosphorescent and Kurt Vile)mixed the album at Water Music in New Jersey. Around 95 percent of it was recorded to an oldtape machine at Gardiner’s home studio\, and the rest was done at Hotel2Tango in Montreal and at a Toronto church where multi-instrumentalist Walker’s father is the Anglican minister. “Dead Horse Creek”\, which is named after the body of water that runs through Gardiner’shometown of Morden\, Manitoba\, creates a layered soundscape with backward guitar\, easygoingharmonica and a crooning slide guitar that all erupt in a foot-stomping\, rollicking jam; “BlackGold”\, inspired by the Keystone XL pipeline protests\, features a 16-person choir\, a VelvetUndergroundesquescreaching violin undertone by band member Edwin Huizinga\, and Gardener embracing a lower register for the first time; “Riding on the Wind” tells stories about refugee families Gardiner met while working with Romero House\, over a bed of dreamy reverb.Meanwhile first single “Swimming in Strange Waters” glimmers like a technicolored circus with warbling synths and organs\, cyclical\, vocoder-drenched gang vocals and a spoken word interlude\, performed by The Highest Order’s Simone Schmidt reading from Herbert’s Dune Messiah. \n“More now than ever\, I feel the weight of responsibility to act and make things better for the people to come\,” says Gardiner. “Maybe that sounds cliche\, but it feels very real now. As an artist\, you have your voice\, and not much else. So you gotta use it.” \n On every album\, the Wooden Sky’s aim is to somehow capture the band’s live performance\, to compress that adrenalin and vigour into a collection of songs that’ll inevitably be played through headphones and crappy computer speakers. It’s a tall order\, considering the Wooden Sky has become known for both high-energy\, sold-out rock shows and their charming\, unconventionalpop-up fgigs – like 2014’s series of three acoustic record store sets in three hours\, where they biked to each shop with instruments slung over their backs. \nSwimming in Strange Waters marks the closest the band has ever got to this coveted goal. To achieve that energy\, Gardiner had to let go of any insecurities and garner new confidence\, part of which he found after speaking with an opera singer friend and working with legendary producer\, Angello\, and part of which came from encapsulating that energy himself. “You have to give the energy that you want to get back\,” notes Gardiner. “When I’m recording\,I’m standing on a chair like I’m on stage\, wearing my boots and my sunglasses\, just trying to create this atmosphere of cacophony. How do you expect to convey that excitement if you don’t feel it? Let’s not just sit here and be bashful.”

SUMMARY:Terra Lightfoot
DESCRIPTION:“Terra Lightfoot is one of Canada’s best all-around musicians…an amazing tour de force\, the complete package.” CBC Radio\n\n\nAt the end of a gruelling two-year stretch on tour promoting her third studio album\, New Mistakes—a trek that took her to every corner of the world—Terra Lightfoot found herself at home and sapped. Life on the road had done a number on her body\, her voice\, and her mind\, and despite isolating herself from friends and family\, sitting down for hours a day at her writing desk\, she was coming up with nothing inspiring. \n \nA trip to Nashville changed all that. Just a few weeks in Music City broke the dam wide open. In rapid succession\, Lightfoot wrote the songs that would form her new record\, Consider the Speed. Out poured more than a dozen\, one after the other\, reflecting on life as a touring musician\, past relationships\, and the death of her grandmother. “The healing power of rock ‘n’ roll\,” a true blue sentiment that Lightfoot and her bandmates keep the faith in on tour\, was in full force. \n \nTHEN IT HIT ME LIKE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING!\, a man yelled as Lightfoot stepped out onto Willie Mitchell Boulevard in Memphis after a visit to Royal Studios. She took it as a sign that she had to return to lay down Consider the Speed there\, the same place Ann Peebles simmered through “I Can’t Stand The Rain” and Al Green set devotion to tape with “Let’s Stay Together.” Even the same technology—a hallowed #9 microphone—captured Lightfoot’s bluesy\, long and low howl during tracking sessions. \n \nEach night\, she sat on a red porch swing on the hot Tennessee nights and considered how dreamlike it was to be in that place with its soul\, blues\, and rock ‘n’ roll ghosts; every day\, she faced the sweet reality of adding her own music to the studio’s history\, working with a cast of supernaturally talented players: Steve Potts on drums\, Davy Smith on bass\, and Lester Snell on keyboards. \n \nIt’s no surprise\, then\, given the combination of a conspiratorial universe and Lightfoot’s hard work\, that Consider the Speed is her most soulful\, soul-baring\, soul-searching record to date. Consider The Speed adds to an impressive legacy that already includes 2018 Polaris Music Prize and JUNO nominations (Adult Alternative Album of the Year) for New Mistakes\, Road Gold Certification thanks to her millions of miles logged around the globe\, including marquee tour dates supporting legendary acts like Willie Nelson\, Bruce Cockburn\, and Blue Rodeo. On top of all that (and being a songwriter and producer for hire)\, in 2019 Lightfoot also debuted The Longest Road Show\, a touring revue that brought some of Canada’s most groundbreaking music-makers together for a jaw-dropping handful of nights in Ontario. Keep an eye out for the next edition when it’s safe to hit the stage again. \n \nUntil then\, Consider the Speed at which you’re falling for Terra Lightfoot—a spectacular velocity that will gain momentum with every electrifying note.

SUMMARY:Big Dave McLean
DESCRIPTION:Backed up by The Muddy-Tones\, Big Dave brings his legendary Mississippi and Chicago blues style to our stage!\n\n\nBig Dave McLean (born August 23\, 1952) is a Canadian blues guitarist\, harmonicist\, singer and songwriter. A veteran performer\, his work has had an influence on many western Canadian blues musicians\, including Colin James and Wide Mouth Mason. Notable McLean songs include “She’s Got the Stuff”\, “Kanadiana”\, “Up On Waverly”\, and “St. Mary At Main”. \n \nBig Dave McLean \nBorn \nAugust 23\, 1952 (age 68) \nYorkton\, Saskatchewan\, Canada \nOrigin \nWinnipeg\, Manitoba\, Canada \nGenres \nBlues \nOccupation(s) \nGuitarist\, harmonicist\, singer and songwriter \nInstruments \nGuitar\, harmonica\, vocals \nYears active \n1970s–present \nLabels \nStony Plain Records\, Black Hen Music \nBillboard noted that “Big Dave’s been the quintessential behind-the-scene bluesman. He’s done more to shape the Western Canadian blues scene than perhaps any other artist”. \n \nIn 2019\, Big Dave McLean was awarded the Order of Canada for his musical influence of Delta and Chicago blues and for mentoring musicians. \n \nLife and career	Edit \n \nMcLean was born in Yorkton\, Saskatchewan\, Canada\, to a concert pianist mother\, and a Presbyterian minister father. They later lived in Moose Jaw\, before relocating to Winnipeg\, Manitoba when Dave was at the age of 10. Introduced to the blues as a teenager via his older brother’s record collection\, the two siblings travelled to the Mariposa Folk Festival in Toronto in 1969. Whilst there\, John P. Hammond gave McLean an impromptu lesson on guitar playing\, to supplement the latter’s rudimentary efforts thus far at playing the harmonica. This meeting saw McLean learning how to play Bo Diddley’s\, “I’m a Man”. McLean much later recalled the incident stating that Hammond was “one of the most courteous gentlemen on this planet\, you know\, totally helpful\, inspiring”. \n \nMcLean starting playing at the Regina Folk Club\, and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival\, where he gained experience before releasing his debut album\, Muddy Waters For President (1989)\, which was recorded at the Bud’s On Broadway club in Saskatoon. McLean had previously opened for his musical hero\, Muddy Waters. \n \nThe follow up was For The Blues… Always (1998)\, an attempt to spread his music to a wider audience. The album was produced by Colin James and recorded in Vancouver\, with musicians James (guitar)\, Norm Fisher (bass)\, Eric Webster (piano) and Chris Norquiest (drums)\, all augmenting McLean’s work. The track listing included McLean’s cover versions of “Little Red Rooster” (Willie Dixon)\, “Just Your Fool” (Little Walter)\, “Dust My Broom” (Elmore James)\, “Rollin’ and Tumblin'” (Muddy Waters) and “Cakewalk Into Town” (Taj Mahal). The three-day recording’s budget was only $1\,600. In addition to performing and recording\, McLean spent around 20 years regularly doing odd jobs\, such as construction work\, to supplement his income. \n \nIn 1998\, he played in a duo with Tim Williams at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. McLean has also appeared solo at the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Fest. \n \nBlues from the Middle (2003) was his second Stony Plains release\, and included guest contributions from Sue Foley and Duke Robillard. It was followed by Acoustic Blues (Got ‘Em From The Bottom) in 2008. \n \nFaded But Not Gone was released in 2014 on Black Hen Music\, and dealt with the aftermath of the deaths of McLean’s mother and brother. Recorded in Nashville\, the album contained contributions from Colin Linden\, Colin James\, and Kevin McKendree\, with Ann and Regina McCrary on backing vocals. \n \nIn 2015\, McLean starred in a low budget film documentary\, Ain’t About the Money\, exploring the trials and tribulations in performing the blues. \n \nOther ventures	Edit \n \nPatrick Friesen wrote Singer\, a docu-drama on Richard Manuel for CBC Radio Manitoba (1989)\, which featured McLean; as well as Voice\, a 1996 radio documentary (featuring McLean and Tracey Dahl)\, by CBC Radio Manitoba and produced by Andrea Ratuski. \n \nIn 1991\, Saturday Night Blues\, a compilation album of recordings by Canadian blues performers\, was released by Stony Plain Records and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It contained the Big Dave McLean and the Muddy-Tones track\, “T.V. Preacher Blues”. In 2006\, McLean contributed the track “Howlin’ for My Baby” to Saturday Night Blues: 20 Years\, a double compilation album also released by CBC. \n \nIn 2005\, The Perpetrators contributed to a tribute album to McLean\, entitled We Best Choose to Pick the Blues. \n \nAwards	Edit \n \nWhisky Award\, 2005 \nRunner-up for Singer Of The Year \nWestern Canadian Music Award\, 2004 \nOutstanding Blues Recording – Blues from the Middle \nPrairie Music Award\, 1999 \nOutstanding Blues Recording – For the Blues… Always \nGreat Canadian Blues Award\, 1998 \nJuno Award \n1992 (winner – Saturday Night Blues) \n2009 (nominated) \n2016 (nominated) \nMaple Blues Award nominations: \nAcoustic Act Of The Year\, 1998\, 1999\, 2000 & 2003 \nBlues With A Feeling Award\, 2007 (winner) \nToronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award \nOrder of Canada\, 2019

SUMMARY:Diaphanie on the West End Neighbourhood Patio
DESCRIPTION:Diaphanie on the West End Neighbourhood Patio – Friday\, July 22\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. \nWe will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nBorn in the cool\, dry air of prairie autumn\, songwriter Heather Thomas’ introduction to folk music came at an early age. Diaphanie is a return to that beginning\, channeling Thomas’ first influences – from Joni to John Prine – to tell the well-trodden stories of old through a new lens. From unrequited love to living in the inner city\, Diaphanie draws new breath into the genre while remaining faithful to the folk tradition\, never shying away from truth or beauty. Diaphanie is heading into the studio in June\, followed by a busy summer including performances at the internationally acclaimed Winnipeg Jazz Festival\, and indie darling Real Love Summer Fest.
