SUMMARY:Mardi Jazz - ÉDITION SPÉCIALE FÊTES

SUMMARY:The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents Music from A Charlie Brown Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents Music from A Charlie Brown Christmas – December 15\, 2021 at 7:30pm\n\n\nThis encore performance (from our 2019-20 season) is a special request of the WECC and has become a holiday tradition in Winnipeg. The entertaining program\, narrated by Quinn Greene and featuring vocalist Jayme Giesbrecht\, is our own WJO version of the famous Charlie Brown Christmas story. \n—– \nWith a voice that stirs your soul\, and a conviction behind the music\, Jayme Giesbrecht encapsulates soul and gospel music with every note she sings. \nWith a 20 year career already on her resume\, Jayme has grown into the “big voice” that brought her so much attention as a child. From church stages\, to exploring different styles of music with various musicians\, taking on techniques in rock n’ roll\, soul\, and jazz added to her full voice. \nHer repertoire has broadened from traditional gospel spirituals and hymns\, to soul classics from Aretha Franklin\, Etta James\, and Tina Turner\, and jazz standards which she performs with her accompanist Jonathan Alexiuk. With the help of some amazing musicians including Alexiuk\, and blues man JP Lepage\, Jayme was able to record and release her debut album “To Keep You From Falling” in 2016. (Produced by John Paul Peters at Private Ear Recording\, Winnipeg). \nThat album was sponsored by Golden West\, a broadcasting company that Jayme is closely connected to\, as she co-hosts the morning show on CFAM 950\, for the past 9 years. She has become well-known “on the air” as a knowledgeable advocate for Manitoba musicians\, as she interviews new artists every week to highlight on the weekly program “Made in Manitoba”. \nBecoming a frequent flyer with pianist Jonathan Alexiuk led Jayme to more opportunities\, eventually gaining her access to the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra stage\, where she performed as a guest in their “Charlie Brown Christmas” special. She has also connected with Blues Man and Member of the Order of Canada\, Big Dave McLean\, and has performed multiple shows with him. She has also opened for April Wine\, The Beach Boys\, and popular gospel groups like The Booth Brothers\, Legacy Five\, and Sweet Presence. Her most recent performance highlights include collaborating and singing back-up vocals for two-time Grammy-nominated Hip-hop artist Fresh IE at a Juno celebration concert in 2020\, and most recently at a Canada Day livestream on Investors Group Field\, the home of reigning Grey Cup Champions\, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. \nWith the local success of her debut album\, Jayme is set to release a second album in the jazz/gospel style in 2020\, and plans to tour the album in Canada. In the meantime\, Jayme regularly performs at various jazz and gospel venues in Southern Manitoba. \n—– \nThe West End Cultural Centre believes a healthy community is at the heart of everything we do. In accordance with the Manitoba Government and Manitoba Health protocols – \n\nAll performers\, crew\, staff\, volunteers\, and patrons must show proof of vaccination and photo ID before they can enter the venue. \nFace masks are required on all WECC premises. Please wear your mask when not seated at a table and/or when not drinking or eating. \n\nThese practices are meant to keep all of us safe to enjoy all the art and music that Winnipeg has to offer.

SUMMARY:Ridley Bent and The Killer Tumbleweeds
DESCRIPTION:“In my heart\,” Ridley Bent says\, sounding for the world like a character from one of his own songs\, “I rock.”\n\n\nLike Ridley Bent’s past records\, Rabbit On My Wheel reads like a collection of short stories\, showcasing the Western Canada based Country artist’s keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short\, crooked road. \n \nOn Rabbit On My Wheel\, the 2009 CCMA nominee and 7-time BCCMA winner’s storytelling and songwriting chops are sharper than ever. But where Ridley’s 2005 MapleMusic Recordings debut\, Blam\, and Buckles and Boots\, his 2007 followup on Open Road Recordings\, ranged far and wide across the continent\, this time out Ridley sticks a little closer to his life at home and on the road in Western Canada. \n \nAlthough the tales are still as tall as they come\, and the characters as large as life or larger\, the cast of hard-drinking\, fast-driving characters Ridley unleashes on Rabbit On My Wheel tend to be a shade less hell-bent on self-destruction than they are with keeping their lives between the lines and out of the ditch. \n \nWhile that may be so\, musically Rabbit On My Wheel definitely kicks it up a notch or six from Ridley’s last record. “In my heart\,” he says\, sounding for the world like a character from one of his own songs\, “I rock.” So does Rabbit On My Wheel… \n \nRecorded in Vancouver’s Factory Studios and Nashcroft Productions in Ashcroft\, BC with returning producer John MacArthur Ellis (Jane Siberry\, Dustin Bentall\, Jeremy Fisher)\, the album brings together the same crack musical team Ridley hit the road with after releasing Buckles and Boots. It also finds Ridley still hip deep in a passionate love affair with old school Country\, but where many of the songs on his past records have come together largely during recording sessions\, these show the distinct marks of having been dragged back and forth across the country a few times. “The band’s tighter\,” Ridley says bluntly. “We worked out a lot of these songs live and only had about a week off after a nice\, long tour with Corb Lund before we went into the studio in December 2009.” \n \nAs tight as they are\, there’s still an off-the-cuff immediacy to the record that’s a consistent hallmark of Ellis’ production. “I like to maintain the spontaneity on the record\,” Ellis explains. “Some producers grind you down to get what they want out of you to the point where it’s like\, ‘well\, why don’t you go and play the !!#?@*!! thing yourself?’ I spend a lot of time selecting musicians. I know what they’re going to bring to the table and I just kind of wrap my arms around that. And the better Ridley gets\,” Ellis adds\, “the better the band gets.” \n \nRabbit On My Wheel also benefits from a collaboration that began shortly after Ridley’s relocation to Winnipeg in 2008\, with guitarist/songwriter Chris Dunn. “Him and I did a lot of writing and working on the songs. Before this I’d get the songs\, go in to the studio with the band and work it out. Having a guitar player there to bounce ideas off in the pre\, pre production was very valuable. He’s a big part of the album.” \n \nChanneling the high-energy performance ethic of artists like Dwight Yoakum and Little Feat\, Ridley and his band tear a deep strip off the joint with tracks like “Square Your Hat”\, which features a guest appearance by renowned Canadian guitarist Luke Doucet (Veal\, Sarah McLachlan)\, “Good Looking Country”\, a song inspired by Ridley’s one and only\, who he moved from Vancouver to Manitoba to be with\, and the album’s closing track “Burning Down Barns”\, on which every player in the band gets a chance to wail. \n \nAs ever\, there are quieter moments as well. Ridley’s never afraid to pepper his records with a few thoughts on love and loneliness – and his evolving cast of moonshine-running\, racecar-driving malcontents tend to know their way around the ladies as well as they do the back roads of the west. Of course these are love stories told the way only Ridley can; tracks that run the gamut from hard and bitter to hardly better\, including a beautifully rendered\, deliberately down-tempo take on the classic Dickey Lee song made famous by George Jones in 1962\, “She Thinks I Still Care”. \n \nWhile much of Ridley’s new material is drawn from real life experiences he’s gathered up on the road\, Rabbit On My Wheel still has its share of shady characters\, jackknifing tractor-trailers and whiskey-fuelled bar fights. And for those who identify strongly with Ridley’s less reasonable characters – the ones who tend to prefer to stir things up with a pistol in one hand and a bottle in the other – there’s The Blood Trilogy. A companion EP recorded during the same sessions and co-written with Dunn – a highly satisfying three-song western epic of violence and vengeance informed by Ridley’s ongoing fascination with the bleak worlds of writers like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. \n \nSimply put\, whether it’s love going strong but wrong in “Livin’ With Her Ex”\, the straight up hooks of the album’s title track\, or the three way struggle between Junior Johnson\, the whiskey and the wife\, on lead single\, “I Can’t Turn My Back On the Bottle”\, Rabbit On My Wheel has everything listeners have come to expect from Ridley Bent and more – A smoking twelve-song set chock full of fast cars\, fine looking ladies and fist fights that finds Ridley burning through a landscape of big country skies\, with one hand on the steering wheel and one eye on the bottle every mile of the way.

SUMMARY:Jaxon Haldane Birthday Release featuring the D-Rangers & Gordie Tentrees
DESCRIPTION:Jaxon Haldane Birthday Release Party featuring the D-Rangers & Gordie Tentrees – Wednesday\, January 12\, 2022\n\n\nMean Old World explores the path of Gordie Tentrees from foster child to foster parent in songs like Rosetta\, Every Child and the title track Mean Old World. Gordie spent time in the social service system before growing up to be a school teacher and youth worker\, then coming back full circle as a foster parent to an indigenous child. Wind Walker is inspired by those of that beat to our own drum. Gordie’s days as a five-time Golden Glove boxer are recounted in Ring Speed. His gratitude rises in Far Away Friends\, a tribute recognizing all those special off-the-stage hosts who supported him in his 2\,500-plus concerts around the world. Further experiences in foreign countries pursuing record deals roll tongue-in-cheek throughout Danke. The learning gained from supporting a childhood friend through the last stages of cancer is presented in Train is Gone. Two best friends who break the mold once a year by adventuring together\, leaving their domestic partners to muddle through\, are featured in Lefties. Twice as Nice lets us know that the grass is never greener. \nThis recording is best listened to as a whole project. Each song is a treasure\, beautifully sung\, great instrumentation\, wonderful production\, fantastic lyrics\, yet fitting together as a whole. Gordie has always had muscle and confidence in his music\, but this project represents increased nuance and depth. The works reveal wit and poignancy. The work inspires the hero in us; it inspires courage\, boldness\, honour\, strength\, and confidence. Gordie reminds us that there are hardships but change is possible. He is helped by a score of artistic collaborators including members of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers\, an internationally renowned Inland Tlingit performance group based out of Whitehorse\, Yukon. \nMean Old World explores humour\, serious reconciliation issues\, abandonment\, glory\, love\, affection\, danger\, safety\, fighting\, fleeing\, winning and losing. The call to action is to get up\, get your toque on\, pursue a red feather kiss\, but don’t forget about the compost and recycling. \nThis is his 8th release and will be supported by 400 tour dates in North America\, Europe\, UK\, Scandinavia\, New Zealand and Australia in 2022-23.This authentic road poet travels North America\, Europe\, Australia\, UK & Ireland with 7 records behind him either solo or with legendary sideman Jaxon Haldane (famed Winnipeg band-D-Rangers) never repeating himself on stage. From Celtic Connections (Glasgow\, Scotland) to the National Folk Festival (Canberra\, AU) his ability to hold an audience\, weave melody\, while juggling the dark with the light is infectious. Performed 750 concerts in 11 countries during the past 4 years armed with 10 instruments\, brotherly harmonies and masterful storytelling. Influenced by touring with friends Fred Eaglesmith\, Mary Gauthier\, Steve Poltz & Kelly Joe Phelps\, Tentrees is just getting started. \n—– \nD.Ranger music is the spiritual ancestry of the hillbilly roots of Rock and Roll. In response to all that is bland and formulaic in modern country music\, The D.Rangers approach their craft with an edgy\, punk attitude\, without losing any reverence for the traditions that started it all. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre believes a healthy community is at the heart of everything we do.

SUMMARY:Frazey Ford
DESCRIPTION:presented by Winnipeg Folk Festival and ACU\n\n\nThe Hear All Year Concert Series is presented by Assiniboine Credit Union. \nDue to current public health orders\, The Park Theatre has outlined COVID-19 protocols for concert attendees. For more information please visit their website: https://myparktheatre.com/faq/ \nDoors: 7:00 PM \nShow: 8:00 PM \nPLEASE NOTE: Any purchase of concert tickets through third-party sites or resellers is at your own risk. Tickets should only be purchased through winnipegfolkfestival.ca or someone you know and trust to reduce risk. \n— \nABOUT \nOn her third album U kin B the Sun\, Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Frazey Ford inhabits an entire world of shapeshifting rhythm\, elevating every beat and groove with the subtle magnetism of her mesmerizing voice. With its graceful collision of soul and psychedelia and sometimes ’70s funk\, it’s a body of work that invites both self-reflection and wildly joyful movement\, and ultimately sparks a quiet transcendence. \nAt turns ecstatic and heavy-hearted\, gloriously shambolic and deeply purifying\, U kin B the Sun is the outcome of a certain personal transformation that Ford has experienced in recent years. “I used to speak more in metaphors\, but this album came out in a much more raw and direct way\,” she says. “I’d say that’s a result of being more in my body and more in touch with the wholeness of anger\, with taking up space and having boundaries. On this record I freed myself from the folk-writing format\, and it’s been a whole different exploration for me.” \nIn a departure from the guitar-driven and largely solitary songwriting that’s defined Ford’s previous work\, much of U kin B the Sun took shape from spontaneous collaboration with her longtime bassist Darren Parris and drummer Leon Power. Over the course of several late-night sessions in the thick of summer 2018\, the three musicians joined producer John Raham in dreaming up a brilliantly untethered sound\, recording as they improvised and continually tapping into their potent camaraderie. “I was excited to let go of control and to see where Darren’s bass lines would take my melodies\,” Ford recalls. “There’s this intimacy that exists within the band now\, and I wanted to explore how that would feel in the writing process.” \nThe first song to emerge from that experiment\, “Golden\,” instantly set a sublime mood for U kin B the Sun\, unfolding in luminous grooves\, dreamy piano tones\, and lyrics delivered with warmth and wisdom (e.g.\, “It is high time you lighten up your head”). “I told Darren\, ‘Whatever’s in your head\, just shout out the chords and we’ll make something up on the spot\,’” says Ford. “And then he did\, and the song just appeared in that moment.” \nAnother track sprung from the same charmed session\, “Azad” reveals the rich emotional texture of U kin B the Sun\, embedding Ford’s lyrical storytelling with sharply rendered memories of early childhood (a time she spent living on a commune in Canada as the daughter of American draft dodgers). With its brightly shuffling beats and soaring vocal work\, “Azad” offers a poignant message of courage (“Behold\, there is beauty in this world/So hold on any way that you know how”). “There’s something to that song that’s about survival\, and about the love that my siblings and I have for each other in coming through an intense situation together\,” says Ford. \nThroughout U kin B the Sun\, Ford endlessly telegraphs an unfettered joy\, even when confronting and examining pain and heartache and loss. To that end\, “U and Me” takes the unlikely form of a tenderly enchanted breakup song\, while “Holdin’ It Down” brings a jazzy determination to its expression of weary perseverance. And on the anthemic “The Kids Are Having None Of It\,” Ford responds to the toxic political climate with irrefutably bold sense of assurance (e.g.\, “They can’t be bought\, they can’t be taught your hate”). \nOne of the most powerfully affecting moments on U kin B the Sun\, the album’s title track and final movement arrives as a strangely hypnotic alchemy of smoldering harmonies\, cascading piano lines\, and beautifully fluid guitar work. “It’s really just two chords and a lyric that repeats\, and then there are these different layers to it\,” “It was a fascinating journey for me\, to realize that you could take something so simple and then just sink into it in that way.” Ford notes\, “It’s really just two chords and a lyric that repeats\, and yet there are so many different layers to it.” \nRecorded at Raham’s Afterlife Studios in Vancouver\, British Columbia\, and also featuring Craig McCaul on guitar and Phil Cook on keys\, U kin B the Sun follows Ford’s 2014 release Indian Ocean\, an album made with members of legendary Memphis soul band The Hi Rhythm Section. Though its predecessor showed traces of her groove-heavy sensibilities\, the new album finds Ford fully embracing the soulful musicality she first displayed in fronting an Al Green cover band in her early 20’s. “When I started writing songs they came out sounding more country\, because that’s what I grew up with\,” says Ford\, who spent 13 years as a member of acclaimed folk act The Be Good Tanyas. “My mom is from an Irish/Cajun/Acadian background and I sang with her from the time I was little\, but I was always really into soul and funk.” \nAs Ford points out\, U kin B the Sun partly draws inspiration from several instances of serendipity that transpired during her international touring in support of Indian Ocean —including playing separate rooms in the same venue as D’Angelo one night in Holland\, which eventually prompted her 2017 cover of the iconic neo-soul singer’s “When We Get By.” But on a deeper level\, U kin B the Sun’s raw vitality reflects Ford’s profound growth over the past few years. “I used to really live in an ether\, and that’s part of why I became an artist: because it was a survival space for me to exist in\,” she says. “A lot of my writing came from that place\, but as I’ve changed over the last year or two\, I feel like I’m more in my body. I think there’s something about being more physically present that impacted the making of this album.” \nTo expand that sense of presence\, Ford made a point of preserving many of the lightning-in-a-bottle moments captured during those first sessions for U kin B the Sun. As a result\, the album embodies the same untamed and ineffable energy that guided its creation. “There’s certain songs that just appear and there’s no art to it\,” says Ford. “To me those songs have some kind of spiritual quality—sometimes I feel like they’re these different voices that you’re able to channel. There really was something magical about the improvisational aspect and how that shaped the album\, and such a joy in the experience of really reveling in what we were all creating together.”

DESCRIPTION:Raine Hamilton – Brave Land Album Release Show on Friday\, January 21\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nResonant\, acoustic chamber folk with an other-worldly edge\, and a lyric presence that cuts deep. Prism-clear vocals + strings: Anchored in the ancient mountains\, reaching up beyond the earthly. \nA classical violinist and musicologist by training\, Raine and their string trio offer string-quartet-like arrangements of Raine’s original songs.
