SUMMARY:RED FANG With Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin: Stygian Bough and HELP
DESCRIPTION:Red Fang\n\n\nI like the idea of the record starting in a way that doesn’t make any sense at all for a Red Fang record.”\n \n \nThat’s vocalist/bassist Aaron Beam talking about “Take It Back\,” the opening track—or “sintro\,” part song\, part intro—of Red Fang’s fifth album\, Arrows.\n \n \n“It reminds me of a time before people listened to music digitally—and they listened to full albums\,” drummer John Sherman adds. “There were often cool\, spooky intros—like fuckin’ Dio albums and shit. There are some weird sounds at the beginning to get you in the mood before it blasts off.”\n \n \nAnd blast off it does. After the woozy opening salvo of “Take It Back\,” Arrows launches into a super-rock trifecta of what Red Fang does best—from Melvins-esque power dirge “Unreal Estate” into the anthemic title track into up-tempo banger “My Disaster.”\n \n \nYeah\, it’s been nearly five years since 2016’s Only Ghosts\, but your favorite beer-crushing\, zombie-killing\, air-guitar-contest-judging metal heroes are back in action\, doing what they do best—AND MORE. “This record feels more like Murder The Mountains to me than any record we’ve done before or since\,” Beam ventures. “It doesn’t sound like that record\, but Murder The Mountains was us doing whatever we wanted\, and that’s what this is\, too.”\n \n \n“We’re definitely exploring new territory\,” says guitarist/vocalist Bryan Giles. “And I’m very happy about that. I wouldn’t wanna be in this band if we kept doing the same thing over and over again.”\n \n \nArrows was recorded at Halfling Studios in the band’s hometown of Portland\, OR\, with longtime collaborator Chris Funk\, who produced Murder The Mountains and 2013’s Whales and Leeches. “Chris is a major influencer as far as the weird ambient stuff in between the songs and the creepy incidental noises within the songs\,” Giles points out. “I think he definitely creates an added layer of atmosphere that we wouldn’t have otherwise.”\n \n \nIn an effort to compound said atmosphere\, Sherman recorded some of his drum parts at the bottom of a pool. Luckily\, it was empty. “It’s actually a kick-ass skate pool\,” the drummer explains. “It was designed by Lance Mountain\, if I’ve got my facts straight. As soon as we decided to record there\, I knew I would end up in the pool at some point.”\n \n \n“The pool was a big part of the record\,” Giles confirms. “The drums sound so huge—it’s crazy. But I was terrified of the pool because there was no railing. Every time I walked by\, I was afraid of falling into it. So it was a love/hate relationship with the pool for me.”\n \n \nThe title Arrows was chosen through Red Fang’s patented and labor-intensive selection process. “Of all the titles that got thrown around\, that was the one everyone hated the least\,” Sherman explains. “Which is the case with every record\, pretty much.”\n \n \n“It’s actually the same way we decided on the band name\,” Beam chimes in. “It was the only one where someone wasn’t like\, ‘NO!’”\n \n \nArrows has the added bonus of a proper title track\, which is new territory for the dudes. “This is the first time we’ve named an album after a song that’s actually on the album\,” Beam explains. “We have other albums that are named after songs of ours that are not on those albums. So this time we’re really fucking with you because we didn’t fuck with you.”\n \n \nIt just so happens that the title track is also the lead single for the album—the general public’s first taste of fresh Fang. “There’s some songs that are pretty clearly Red Fang on this album\, and others that maybe go a little further outside of what we’ve normally done\,” Beam explains. “‘Prehistoric Dog’ was clearly the song to pick for the first single from the first record. ‘Wires’ was clearly the song to pick from the second record. I’m not sure there was a clear frontrunner on this album\, which could be taken to mean that either all of the songs are kind of mediocre at best or there are quite a few that could qualify as the lead single. So it came down to the ones that the dudes who are making the videos liked best.”\n \n \nWhich brings us to director Rob McConnaughy\, who created the pants-pissing clips for “Prehistoric Dog\,” “Wires” and many other Red Fang hits. “His way of presenting us really works\,” guitarist David Sullivan says. “That first video he did for us for ‘Prehistoric Dog’ gave us a big jumpstart as far as the band getting popular. And we love working with him.”\n \n \nOver the years\, McConnaughy has helped showcase an aspect of Red Fang that most metal and hard rock bands shy away from: Humor. “It suits our personalities\,” Giles points out. “I mean\, I don’t wanna fight people\, you know? If I look like I’m flexing\, they’ll be like\, ‘Oh\, I can take him.’ But if we’re making a joke\, maybe someone will wanna tell me a joke—or buy me a beer.”\n \n \n“If you were to have dinner with the band\, it would be closer to one of our videos than\, like\, us walking in slow-mo through the fog with a goat’s head\,” he adds. “I mean\, no one’s gonna believe that shit.”\n \n \nSimilarly\, fans might not believe what the song “Arrows” is partially about. “If you’re confused by some of the lyrics to that song\, that makes sense\,” Beam explains. “But it makes reference to meditation. I started meditating six years ago\, but I can only do it when I’m not feeling too anxious. So\, when I don’t need it\, that’s when I can do it.”\n \n \nElsewhere\, “Fonzi Scheme” was named after legendary Happy Days cool guy Arthur Fonzarelli—if only because it’s in the key of his famous catchphrase\, “Aaay.” Producer Chris Funk came up with the idea of bringing in string players from the Portland Cello Project to class up the track. “I would say laziness drove that decision\,” Beam deadpans. “We didn’t want to come up with any guitar melodies\, so we hired someone else to do it for us.”\n \n \nMeanwhile\, the opening riff of closer “Funeral Coach” was written 12 years ago. But it took until recently for the song to blossom into its full double-entendre glory. “I was driving around and I saw a hearse that said ‘funeral coach services’ on the back\,” Beam explains. “So the first thing that popped into my head was a dude with a headset and a clipboard going\, ‘Alright\, dudes—more tears! Five minutes in is when the tears are critical\, or no one’s gonna believe that anyone cares that this person died.’”\n \n \nIn a nod to tradition\, Arrows will be available in formats that include all the drums\, bass\, guitars and vocals. But it could’ve gone another way. “Our original idea was to release the album with no vocals or guitar solos\,” Beam explains. “If you want the guitar solos\, it’s an extra five bucks. If you want the vocals\, it’s an extra ten bucks. So basically people should feel lucky that we didn’t do that. You get to buy the whole thing all together.”\n \n \nRed Fang think of it as a generous display of gratitude toward their fans. “Yeah\,” says Sherman\, “Thank you for buying our album\, you lucky bastards.”

SUMMARY:The Broken Song Band at the West End Neighbourhood Patio
DESCRIPTION:The Broken Song Band at the West End Neighbourhood Patio – Saturday\, August 6\, 2022 at 8pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nPoetry in musical motion from two of Winnipeg’s most successful artists: writer (and singer)\, Margaret Sweatman; and composer/musician\, Glenn Buhr. \nThe Broken Songs Band began with Margaret Sweatman’s spoken word\, with bass\, percussion and some sax; first\, for the Winnipeg Symphony’s New Music Festival\, then later orchestrated in the recording studio by Glenn Buhr with poetry. Then the lines of poetry began to sing. Eventually\, there were song fragments with one verse that needed a second verse and a bridge\, and so Margaret wrote more lyrics for Glenn\, who trimmed and shaped them with his ear for blending melodies with words. Then there were a dozen songs. Then two dozen. \nAfter several years going from project to project in several Canadian cities with a collection of different musicians\, the Broken Songs Band has now settled in Winnipeg and is currently working on a project with poet/story-teller\, Duncan Mercredi. \n—– \nMargaret Sweatman’s plays have been produced by Prairie Theatre Exchange\, Popular Theatre Alliance and the Guelph Spring Festival. She has performed (songs and spoken word) with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and the National Academy Orchestra\, as well as with her own Broken Songs Band. Sweatman is the author of the novels Fox\, Sam and Angie\, The Players\, Mr. Jones\, The Gunsmith’s Daughter\, and When Alice Lay Down with Peter\, which won several awards including the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the McNally Robinson Book of the Year. With Glenn Buhr\, Sweatman won a Genie Award for Best Song in Canadian Film (Seven Times Lucky). \nGlenn Buhr became well known in Canada as co-founder with conductor Bramwell Tovey of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival. Buhr has toured Canada twice as a jazz artist\, and has recently performed his 2nd Piano Concerto with the Esprit Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. His Symphony no. 3 (a choral symphony) was premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in February 2008 with pop singer Sarah Slean as soloist. His full length ballet Beauty and the Beast has toured the UK (five times)\, Hong Kong\, Japan and mainland China for a total of more than 200 performances.

SUMMARY:Paper Machetes on the West End Neighbourhood Patio
DESCRIPTION:Paper Machetes on the West End Neighbourhood Patio – Friday\, August 12\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nCinematic power pop from the cold plains of Manitoba. \nPaper Machetes is led by Christy Taronno who has been enigmatically contributing her songwriting to various projects for years. Her songs have been featured in theatre (Bizarro Obscure 2014\, Manic Pixie Dream Girl 2015\, Uncomfortably Live 2017\,) television (Wynter 2018\,) and film (CBC Short Doc – Exposed Nerves 2018\, Ruthless Souls 2020.) \nAfter Taronno connected with drummer Danny Nguyen playing in the alt rock band SETTLERS they formed Paper Machetes as a more pop-sounding departure. \nIn Winter 2021 after a year of distanced collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Justin Delorme\, Paper Machetes released their debut EP\, “Balancing Act.” \nIt features an earthy\, modern vintage sound reminiscent of Lana Del Rey or Father John Misty\, and explores themes of existentialism and hope in the face of it. After this breakout\, “Balancing Act” has been praised by Manitoba critics to be “well-crafted” and “melancholy\,” “like a caressing wind\, sweep you into the air.”

DESCRIPTION:Beloved Winnipeg blues and R&B powerhouse singer/guitarist well-known for fronting an amazing band and an incredibly vibrant live show.\n\n\nMark is one of those well-respected artists who’s been around\, building steam\, making records and touring in support of some of the world’s best-known roots artists. The past two decades have seen Mark stream through a journey from busker to seasoned performer with masterful chops and the kind of mesmerizing stage presence that most artists never achieve in a lifetime. Turning heads because of youthful talent\, he won a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music at 19\, paid his dues in the blues clubs\, made a record with Los Lobos producer Keith Keller’s at Keller’s mansion in New Orleans\, won a sackful of awards\, and warmed up stages for everyone from Robert Cray and Blue Rodeo to Colin James and Jesse Winchester. It’s been said that if Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett had a love child\, Mark Reeves would be it. Fans of Lovett and Martin Sexton will eat up Reeves’ hard-earned positive vibe\, rock solid rhythmic groove and kick-ass Motown horn section which adds a pleasant double-espresso kick to the mix.Anybody who loves R&B will immediately be inspired by Mark’s infectious\, dance-all-night grove thang\, but there are profoundly beautiful moments here\, and unpretentious lyrical wisdom that makes you sit back while you catch your breath.

SUMMARY:Sue Foley
DESCRIPTION:With her wild ‘60s garage-rock swagger and stinging Texas big-tone blues\, Sue Foley is the rightly regarded queen of the Fender Telecaster.\n\n\nPinky’s Blues\, the new Stony Plain Records album from award-winning blues guitarist/singer Sue Foley\, scored a trifecta of nominations at the recently announced nominees from the Blues Foundation for the 43rd Blues Music Awards. Foley garnered nominations for “Album of the Year\,” “Traditional Blues Album\,” and “Traditional Blues Female Artist.” \n“I’m over the moon about these three Blues Music Award nominations\,” said Texas-based Sue Foley after she heard the news. “What an incredible honor to be acknowledged in Memphis. Speaking for everyone who helped create Pinky’s Blues\, we’re proud to have made a real blues album and are thrilled that folks are loving it.” \nFeaturing several Sue Foley originals\, as well as songs from some of her favorite blues and roots artists\, Pinky’s Blues showcases Sue Foley (guitar\, vocals)\, accompanied by Chris “Whipper” Layton (drums)\, Jon Penner (bass)\, and Mike Flanigin (Hammond B3 organ)\, who also produced the album. The legendary Jimmie Vaughan joins is a special guest on rhythm guitar on the track\, “Hurricane Girl.” \nPinky’s Blues is the follow up to Sue Foley’s award-winning album\, The Ice Queen\, (2018). Foley’s new album is a raw\, electric guitar driven romp through the backroads of Texas blues\, with Foley’s signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster\, “Pinky\,” at the wheel. \nFoley won “Best Traditional Female (Koko Taylor Award)” at the 2020 Blues Music Awards in Memphis\, was nominated for a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy)\, and she took home the award for “Best Guitar Player” at the Toronto Maple Blues Awards. For the last few years Foley and her band have kept a rigorous touring schedule across the USA\, Canada and Europe. Some highlights were appearances at Love Rocks NYC (with Cyndi Lauper\, Dave Mathews and Tedeschi Trucks) at The Beacon Theater (NYC)\, guesting with Jimmie Vaughan (opening for Eric Clapton) at Royal Albert Hall in London\, Montreal Jazz Festival\, Ottawa Bluesfest (with Buddy Guy)\, Moulin Blues (Holland)\, NPR’s Mountain Stage (with Bela Fleck)\, and The Jungle Show (with Billy F Gibbons and Jimmie Vaughan) in Austin\, Texas.

SUMMARY:Big Dave McLean’s 70th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Due to a forecast of rain\, we’ll be celebrating Big Dave McLean’s 70th birthday in the club tonight!\n\n\nBig Dave McLean (born August 23\, 1952) is a Canadian blues guitarist\, harmonicist\, singer and songwriter. A veteran performer\, his work has had an influence on many western Canadian blues musicians\, including Colin James and Wide Mouth Mason. Notable McLean songs include “She’s Got the Stuff”\, “Kanadiana”\, “Up On Waverly”\, and “St. Mary At Main”. \n \nBig Dave McLean \nBorn \nAugust 23\, 1952 (age 68) \nYorkton\, Saskatchewan\, Canada \nOrigin \nWinnipeg\, Manitoba\, Canada \nGenres \nBlues \nOccupation(s) \nGuitarist\, harmonicist\, singer and songwriter \nInstruments \nGuitar\, harmonica\, vocals \nYears active \n1970s–present \nLabels \nStony Plain Records\, Black Hen Music \nBillboard noted that “Big Dave’s been the quintessential behind-the-scene bluesman. He’s done more to shape the Western Canadian blues scene than perhaps any other artist”. \n \nIn 2019\, Big Dave McLean was awarded the Order of Canada for his musical influence of Delta and Chicago blues and for mentoring musicians. \n \nLife and career	Edit \n \nMcLean was born in Yorkton\, Saskatchewan\, Canada\, to a concert pianist mother\, and a Presbyterian minister father. They later lived in Moose Jaw\, before relocating to Winnipeg\, Manitoba when Dave was at the age of 10. Introduced to the blues as a teenager via his older brother’s record collection\, the two siblings travelled to the Mariposa Folk Festival in Toronto in 1969. Whilst there\, John P. Hammond gave McLean an impromptu lesson on guitar playing\, to supplement the latter’s rudimentary efforts thus far at playing the harmonica. This meeting saw McLean learning how to play Bo Diddley’s\, “I’m a Man”. McLean much later recalled the incident stating that Hammond was “one of the most courteous gentlemen on this planet\, you know\, totally helpful\, inspiring”. \n \nMcLean starting playing at the Regina Folk Club\, and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival\, where he gained experience before releasing his debut album\, Muddy Waters For President (1989)\, which was recorded at the Bud’s On Broadway club in Saskatoon. McLean had previously opened for his musical hero\, Muddy Waters. \n \nThe follow up was For The Blues… Always (1998)\, an attempt to spread his music to a wider audience. The album was produced by Colin James and recorded in Vancouver\, with musicians James (guitar)\, Norm Fisher (bass)\, Eric Webster (piano) and Chris Norquiest (drums)\, all augmenting McLean’s work. The track listing included McLean’s cover versions of “Little Red Rooster” (Willie Dixon)\, “Just Your Fool” (Little Walter)\, “Dust My Broom” (Elmore James)\, “Rollin’ and Tumblin'” (Muddy Waters) and “Cakewalk Into Town” (Taj Mahal). The three-day recording’s budget was only $1\,600. In addition to performing and recording\, McLean spent around 20 years regularly doing odd jobs\, such as construction work\, to supplement his income. \n \nIn 1998\, he played in a duo with Tim Williams at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. McLean has also appeared solo at the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Fest. \n \nBlues from the Middle (2003) was his second Stony Plains release\, and included guest contributions from Sue Foley and Duke Robillard. It was followed by Acoustic Blues (Got ‘Em From The Bottom) in 2008. \n \nFaded But Not Gone was released in 2014 on Black Hen Music\, and dealt with the aftermath of the deaths of McLean’s mother and brother. Recorded in Nashville\, the album contained contributions from Colin Linden\, Colin James\, and Kevin McKendree\, with Ann and Regina McCrary on backing vocals. \n \nIn 2015\, McLean starred in a low budget film documentary\, Ain’t About the Money\, exploring the trials and tribulations in performing the blues. \n \nOther ventures	Edit \n \nPatrick Friesen wrote Singer\, a docu-drama on Richard Manuel for CBC Radio Manitoba (1989)\, which featured McLean; as well as Voice\, a 1996 radio documentary (featuring McLean and Tracey Dahl)\, by CBC Radio Manitoba and produced by Andrea Ratuski. \n \nIn 1991\, Saturday Night Blues\, a compilation album of recordings by Canadian blues performers\, was released by Stony Plain Records and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It contained the Big Dave McLean and the Muddy-Tones track\, “T.V. Preacher Blues”. In 2006\, McLean contributed the track “Howlin’ for My Baby” to Saturday Night Blues: 20 Years\, a double compilation album also released by CBC. \n \nIn 2005\, The Perpetrators contributed to a tribute album to McLean\, entitled We Best Choose to Pick the Blues. \n \nAwards	Edit \n \nWhisky Award\, 2005 \nRunner-up for Singer Of The Year \nWestern Canadian Music Award\, 2004 \nOutstanding Blues Recording – Blues from the Middle \nPrairie Music Award\, 1999 \nOutstanding Blues Recording – For the Blues… Always \nGreat Canadian Blues Award\, 1998 \nJuno Award \n1992 (winner – Saturday Night Blues) \n2009 (nominated) \n2016 (nominated) \nMaple Blues Award nominations: \nAcoustic Act Of The Year\, 1998\, 1999\, 2000 & 2003 \nBlues With A Feeling Award\, 2007 (winner) \nToronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award \nOrder of Canada\, 2019

SUMMARY:Micah Erenberg “Songs From The Secret Beach” Album Release
DESCRIPTION:Micah Erenberg “Songs From The Secret Beach” with Sophie Stevens\, Skyblues\, Curtis Falk\, Blue McLeod\, Fontine\, and The Famous Sandhogs.\n\n\nThe Secret Beach is the moniker used by bedroom folk artist\, Micah Erenberg\, whose refreshingly plainspoken candor has become a dominant through-line in the singer/songwriter’s ever-expanding catalog. Whether releasing records under his own name\, or lending his talents as a producer\, Erenberg exists in a constant whirlpool of creation. This latest offering\, Songs From The Secret Beach\, finds beauty in the mundanity of daily life. Produced by Erenberg\, and mixed by revered producer/engineer Rob Schnapf (Kurt Vile\, Beck\, Cass Mccombs)\, this collection is at once an exercise in restraint\, as well as an arrestingly lush exploration of sonic possibility. \nSince the release of his 2016 debut\, Erenberg has toured extensively in support of his solo pursuits. Previously signed to the now defunct Canadian indie label Sleepless Records (Michael Rault\, July Talk) for his well-regarded 2019 release Love Is Gonna Find You\, Erenberg’s brand of unabashed lyrical honesty\, and vulnerable talk-like delivery has earned admiration from audiences across North America and Europe. \nOf his process\, Erenberg states\, “A lot of music inherently mimics other music. It’s just natural because there is so much music out there. It’s impossible not to be inspired and shaped by the music you hear\, so I try to draw more of my inspiration from non-musical things; physical experiences\, conversations\, feelings\, sensations\, and inner reflections\, in an attempt to achieve some form of genuine originality.” This exercise is clearly displayed on the track “God Is\,” where Erenberg offers Lennon-esq narratives of the co-existence of god and man in raw glamor-less situations. Similarly\, on the title track\, Erenberg delivers a juxtaposition between a blissfully playful arrangement\, and a whimsically disguised commentary on the fragility of human existence. This is a common place practice for the singer-songwriter\, who seamlessly maneuvers between carefree melodicism and heavy subject matter. The wisdom of this record exists between the cracks. There is a nuance that could easily be overlooked. However\, Songs From The Secret Beach takes a courageous and uninhibited stab at honesty\, and it may be the best kept secret you discover this year.
