SUMMARY:Bullrider
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful mix of high energy guitars\, tight bass lines\, captivating rhythm sections that make you wanna dance\, and you’re now allowed to!\n\n\nA four piece Indie Rock band based out of Winnipeg Manitoba. With a wonderful mix of high energy guitars\, tight bass lines\, captivating rhythm sections that make you wanna get up and dance\, and strong emphasis on songwriting makes this band a stand out creature on its own. \n \nWith each member having their own unique talents\, brought in from numerous other projects\, BULLRIDER reflects a well rounded and more sophisticated style of songwriting\, which shines through each of the tracks from the “Hidden gems…” album. “Writing this record\, from idea to completion\, was like watching a picture come into focus. As different as we all are\, it just makes sense. With this many compatiable writers in one room\, it’s exciting to see what we can make happen next.”\, says lyricist\, Bobby Desjarlais. \n \nWith a slew of notable show experiences (Canada Day @ The Forks Wpg\, Harvest Moon Festival\, Dauphins Country Fest\, ManyFest.) on a wide range of stages\, BULLRIDER draws on a complete pallet of emotions – from fun loving chorus’\, dark and heartbroken versus\, to haunting and even psychedelic bridges. BULLRIDER’s debut album\, ‘Hidden Gems and the Love of Another’\, is set to release early November\, 2018. \n \n“If you are interested in alt rock music\, Bullrider is a rising band that you need to check out. They can write some of the most infectious hooks we’ve heard in recent memory.”- Eartothegroundmusic \n \nComprised of Ben Ferguson (Ash Koley)\, Chris Peluk (Alverstone\, Mad Young Darlings)\, Tom Sinnott and Bobby Desjarlais (The Bokononists\, Attica Riots).

SUMMARY:Raine Maida & Chantal Kreviazuk – FALL 2021 TOUR
DESCRIPTION:RAINE MAIDA & CHANTAL KREVIAZUK\n\n\nThe Park Theatre Presents \nRAINE MAIDA & CHANTAL KREVIAZUK \nLive in the intimate setting of the Park Theatre \nWednesday\, November 10th\, 2021 \nDoors 7 pm | Show 8 pm \n$50 advance \nChantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida \n \nChantal Kreviazuk\, a two-time JUNO Award winner and Raine Maida — a four-time winner with Our Lady Peace — are one of Canada’s most influential cultural couples. \nKreviazuk made her critically acclaimed full-length debut\, Under These Rocks and Stones\, in 1997. Since then\, the Winnipeg born singer-songwriter has released five more studio albums\, and garnered five JUNO Award nominations. Maida has forged a dynamic career as a solo artist and the front man for the band Our Lady Peace\, 25-time JUNO Award nominees\, including winners for Rock Album of the Year in 2003 (Gravity) and 1998 (Clumsy). \nThe pair has also co-written countless hits for artists such as Kelly Clarkson\, David Cook and Carrie Underwood. \nWhile Kreviazuk and Maida are quick to lend their time to the studio and stage\, they are equally committed to lending their help to those in need — both in Canada and internationally. In March\, the couple received the 2014 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award that recognizing outstanding Canadian artists whose contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada. \n“Not only am I able to express myself\, and be able to play music for others and be creative for a living in life\, but I can go to the next level and be a part of true greatness — the process of another human being’s healing\, possibly playing even a small role in improving the quality of life of another\,” Kreviazuk said. \nWar Child Canada is one of the many organizations the married couple has embraced. Kreviazuk is an honourary founder and active in various causes including women’s rights\, war refugees and child education. Maida launched War Child’s Busking for Change program\, in which Canadian musicians have raised money for children in the world’s most devastated regions\, supporting initiatives such as the construction of schools in the Congo. Additionally the couple has recorded contributions for multiple benefit albums for War Child. \n“I was first drawn to music because of the inherent ‘hope’ it provided me\,” Maida said. “Social activism carries that same promise and the two together have shaped and taught me more than I could ever repay.”

SUMMARY:Slow Leaves
DESCRIPTION:Grant Davidson\, known professionally as Slow Leaves\, is a Canadian singer\, songwriter\, and musician.\n\n\nGrant Davidson\, known professionally as Slow Leaves\, is a Canadian singer\, songwriter\, and musician. Davidson began playing guitar at age 15\, inspired after discovering a Led Zeppelin II cassette tape in his older brother’s room. It was a finger-picked guitar however that would eventually form the heart of his songs. \n \nAfter three shoe-string budget albums under his own name\, Davidson debuted as Slow Leaves in 2014 with Beauty Is So Common\, followed by Enough About Me in 2017. In 2020 he released the strikingly vulnerable Shelf Life (Birthday Cake) which represented the culmination of a distinctive poetic voice exploring recurring themes of romantic memory\, artistic ambition\, and dreams left unfulfilled. \n \nOn his most recent release\, 2021’s Holiday (Birthday Cake)\, Davidson sought reprieve from pointed self-analysis\, this time observing life through a decidedly more abstract lens. “I started recording music simply for fun\,” he explains\, “trying not to overthink\, avoiding the impulse to turn every song into a personal manifesto. I needed a break from myself”. \n \nDavidson’s voice is fragile and assured. His music could exist as comfortably in the ‘70s as it does in today’s age of curated images and hollow soundbites\, when vulnerability can be seen as defiance and sincerity as radical.

SUMMARY:Zachary Lucky & Bobby Dove
DESCRIPTION:Zachary Lucky & Bobby Dove at the West End Cultural Centre – November 21 @ 8:00pm\n\n\nZachary Lucky \nAward nominated songwriter Zachary Lucky is unapologetically old-school country\, armed with a husky\, baritone voice – He carries himself like a younger Richard Buckner or a heartier Doug Paisley and often receives comparisons to songwriters such as Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson. He sings of Canadian places and people as knowingly as he might Townes Van Zandt or the Rio Grande. It’s a relatable show on many levels\, and conjures universal feelings that have passed through our collective timelines. Already hailed as a master storyteller by outlets ranging from No Depression to The Globe and Mail\, Zachary returns this fall with a new collection of traditional folk and country songs called “Songs For Hard Times”. Out November 2021. \nBobby Dove \nBobby Dove has built a following across Canada and beyond. Born in Montreal\, Quebec\, Bobby has become known as one of the country’s most dedicated troubadours\, crooning live audiences with heart-worn originals\, and paying tribute to the golden age of Country music. \nAlong the road\, Bobby has worked with a number of legendary players\, and shared stages with artists such as Mary Gauthier\, Richard Thompson\, Irish Mythen\, The Sadies and JD Mcpherson. In 2019\, Bobby spent a month in residency at the Banff Centre and has performed at a number of Canadian folk fests\, including the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and Vancouver Island Music Fest. \nCo-produced with Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) and Tim Vesely (Rheostatics) at The Woodshed studio in Toronto\, Bobby Dove’s new album\, Hopeless Romantic\, offers 11 new original Americana/Country songs on subjects such as unrequited love\, being on the road\, haunted hotels and hard-rocking pallbearers. On Hopeless Romantic\, Bobby collaborates with some of the finest in Canadian Country music including members of Blue Rodeo Jim Cuddy\, Bazil Donovan and Jimmy Bowskill (The Sheepdogs\, Blue Rodeo)\, and Burke Carroll (Kathleen Edwards). \nThe Dove is currently hunkering down in western Manitoba\, supporting the launch of Hopeless Romantic as well as developing The Bobby Dove Show\, a virtual variety show\, featuring Bobby’s new songs\, and interviews with renowned roots/Country singer-songwriters from across Canada. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \n The West End Cultural Centre believes a healthy community is at the heart of everything we do. SUMMARY:Martha Wainwright
DESCRIPTION:Martha Wainright – Presented by the Winnipeg Folk Festival\n\n\nDoors: 7:00 PM \nShow: 8:00 PM \nTickets: Available on Friday\, June 11\, 2021 at 10:00 AM \n*Seated Show \nPLEASE NOTE: Any purchase of concert tickets through third-party sites or resellers is at your own risk. Tickets should only be purchased through winnipegfolkfestival.ca or someone you know and trust to reduce risk. \nABOUT \nMartha Wainwright is beginning again. \nThe beguiling performer and songwriter return’s with Love Will Be Reborn\, out in August. Not since 2012’s Come Home to Mama has a Martha Wainwright record been so full of original written material. Wainwright’s fifth studio album follows recent years of loneliness and clarity in search of optimism and joy. \nWainwright wrote the first song—and what would become the title track— of the record a few years ago. It was a very dark time\, she says\, but the positivity and luminosity of “Love Will Be Reborn” signalled what was to come. The song simply poured out of her. \nMuch of Wainwright’s songwriting since 2016’s Goodnight City felt too raw. “There were several years where I picked up the guitar\, and I was so\, so sad and depressing. I would just put it down because I was terrible.” Before writing it out\, or writing through it for catharsis\, Wainwright had to live it. Album opener “Middle of the Lake” reinforces Wainwright’s path forward as she sings over voltaic chords and percussion\, “I sing my songs of love and pain / Winds of change or simply singing\, I’m singing in the rain.” Her work never shies away from an existential throbbing wound. “There are a couple major subjects on the record. From what I can tell\, there’s really dark and then light\,” she says\,” It really is reflective of a very difficult period of divorce. Then\, after that\, it’s meeting somebody new and amazing. And so you hear certain songs about this new love.” \nWainwright enlisted Canadian producer Pierre Marchand for Love Will Be Reborn. “Hole In My Heart” is an upbeat song\, with Wainwright singing\, “I got naked right away when I saw you / My love was like the rain when I saw you\,” as is the track\, “Getting Older\,” which is about aging and new love. Other songs\, she says\, “represent me trying to shake away the past a little bit\, the ball and chain of that anger\, try to escape from it.” \nThere is no song more gripping than “Report Card.” The song is stripped to essential instrumentals punctuating her anguish. Wainwright expresses on the sombre track a feeling of deep loneliness\, evoking emotional nuances particular to parents and individuals separated from their children because of custody arrangements. \nMartha Wainwright’s role as an artist has always been to embrace her wildness and sketch out her raw depth. This edge is what makes Wainwright uncompromisingly herself and continues to draw in an audience two decades on. To begin again does not mean starting over. This process of rebirth honours the past to move forward. Love Will Be Reborn captures Wainwright’s heart in transition. In an effort to rise out of some painful depths\, as she says much like a phoenix from the ashes of an existential twilight\, Wainwright bore witness to what her heart endured to find a new joy once more.

SUMMARY:Field Guide with Georgia Harmer
DESCRIPTION:Field Guide with Georgia Harmer at the West End Cultural Centre – November 26th @ 8pm\n\n\nDylan MacDonald’s songwriting doesn’t leave you questioning what’s on his mind. It’s music formed from late night\, love fuelled nostalgia\, seen through rose-coloured lenses. Dylan has toured extensively since high school both as a guitarist for artists like Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and with his band The Middle Coast. ‘Full Time’ is his debut solo effort\, the EP is expected to be released in May 2019. The four songs were recorded in Vancouver at Monarch Studios and in Winnipeg at Guest Room Studios. \n—– \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nThe West End Cultural Centre believes a healthy community is at the heart of everything we do. In accordance with the Manitoba Government and Manitoba Health protocols – \n\nAll performers\, crew\, staff\, volunteers\, and patrons must show proof of vaccination and photo ID before they can enter the venue. \nFace masks are required on all WECC premises. Please wear your mask when not seated at a table and/or when not drinking or eating. \n\nThese practices are meant to keep all of us safe to enjoy all the art and music that Winnipeg has to offer.
