SUMMARY:Stones vs Beatles
DESCRIPTION:Ain’t nobody like The Honeysliders takin’ on the music of the Rolling Stones and The Beatles! Get ready to rock!!\n\n\nAn all-star cast of Winnipeg’s music scene mvps\, the Honeysliders are the ultimate house band. Whether it’s dirt-road country growls\, angst-ridden back-porch blues\, whiskey-soaked party-rock or just honest prairie vocals\, The Honeysliders will deliver. \nFounding members\, Jamie Buckboro(lead vocals/guitar/percussion) and Micah Bell(bass guitar/vocals) together with master keyboardist\, Alex Campballse(keyboard/Whurlitzer/harmonica/vocals)\, multi-talented Winnipeg drummer\, Jesse Millar(percussion/guitar/vocals) and local guitar icon\, Chris ‘Chopper’ Carmichael (guitar/vocals/percussion)\, The Honeysliders have branded an undeniably kinetic sound. \nThriving on the challenge of tributes to their music heroes – CSNY\, The Band\, Neil Young\, the Beatles\, The Rolling Stones – and Canadian contemporaries – Sloan\, Terra Lightfoot\, The Sheepdogs – their performances teleport to a time when live bootlegs and curated albums ruled turntables and airwaves. \nBorn from these eclectic influences\, their original songs elevate them above mere cover-band status and threaten to rattle the rafters with shout-along anthemic camaraderie. The Honeysliders are currently compiling material for their first full-length album release… \nSo put an arm around your partner-in-crime and raise a cup to hometown pride because any member of this band can step forward and break your heart or blow your mind.

SUMMARY:Fontine with Taylor Jackson on the West End Neighbourhood Patio
DESCRIPTION:Fontine with Taylor Jackson on the West End Neighbourhood Patio – Saturday\, August 27\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nFontine crafts sanguine lyrics that tell of loves past and present. often using themes of nature to ground her songwriting. Her identity as a Nehiyaw Iskwew goes back to early memories of visiting the family farm on Cowessess First Nation reserve. Through songwriting\, beading\, and exploring the natural world\, FONTINE is working to uncover the roots buried for years\, and become a part of a wider community of songwriters. \nAlthough Fontine is just beginning her journey as a solo artist\, she has been singing and playing with local Winnipeg acts such as Boy Golden\, Sol James and The Solutions for several years\, and is a recognizable face in the local scene. \nFontine and Kris Ulrich (producer) have come together to create fresh indie pop sounds inspired by the likes of Lianne La Havas\, Billie Marten\, and Leif Vollebeck. Her first EP will have you dreaming of a simpler time and leave you wanting more music.

SUMMARY:Ridley Bent and The Killer Tumbleweeds
DESCRIPTION:“In my heart\,” Ridley Bent says\, sounding for the world like a character from one of his own songs\, “I rock.”\n\n\nLike Ridley Bent’s past records\, Rabbit On My Wheel reads like a collection of short stories\, showcasing the Western Canada based Country artist’s keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short\, crooked road. \n \nOn Rabbit On My Wheel\, the 2009 CCMA nominee and 7-time BCCMA winner’s storytelling and songwriting chops are sharper than ever. But where Ridley’s 2005 MapleMusic Recordings debut\, Blam\, and Buckles and Boots\, his 2007 followup on Open Road Recordings\, ranged far and wide across the continent\, this time out Ridley sticks a little closer to his life at home and on the road in Western Canada. \n \nAlthough the tales are still as tall as they come\, and the characters as large as life or larger\, the cast of hard-drinking\, fast-driving characters Ridley unleashes on Rabbit On My Wheel tend to be a shade less hell-bent on self-destruction than they are with keeping their lives between the lines and out of the ditch. \n \nWhile that may be so\, musically Rabbit On My Wheel definitely kicks it up a notch or six from Ridley’s last record. “In my heart\,” he says\, sounding for the world like a character from one of his own songs\, “I rock.” So does Rabbit On My Wheel… \n \nRecorded in Vancouver’s Factory Studios and Nashcroft Productions in Ashcroft\, BC with returning producer John MacArthur Ellis (Jane Siberry\, Dustin Bentall\, Jeremy Fisher)\, the album brings together the same crack musical team Ridley hit the road with after releasing Buckles and Boots. It also finds Ridley still hip deep in a passionate love affair with old school Country\, but where many of the songs on his past records have come together largely during recording sessions\, these show the distinct marks of having been dragged back and forth across the country a few times. “The band’s tighter\,” Ridley says bluntly. “We worked out a lot of these songs live and only had about a week off after a nice\, long tour with Corb Lund before we went into the studio in December 2009.” \n \nAs tight as they are\, there’s still an off-the-cuff immediacy to the record that’s a consistent hallmark of Ellis’ production. “I like to maintain the spontaneity on the record\,” Ellis explains. “Some producers grind you down to get what they want out of you to the point where it’s like\, ‘well\, why don’t you go and play the !!#?@*!! thing yourself?’ I spend a lot of time selecting musicians. I know what they’re going to bring to the table and I just kind of wrap my arms around that. And the better Ridley gets\,” Ellis adds\, “the better the band gets.” \n \nRabbit On My Wheel also benefits from a collaboration that began shortly after Ridley’s relocation to Winnipeg in 2008\, with guitarist/songwriter Chris Dunn. “Him and I did a lot of writing and working on the songs. Before this I’d get the songs\, go in to the studio with the band and work it out. Having a guitar player there to bounce ideas off in the pre\, pre production was very valuable. He’s a big part of the album.” \n \nChanneling the high-energy performance ethic of artists like Dwight Yoakum and Little Feat\, Ridley and his band tear a deep strip off the joint with tracks like “Square Your Hat”\, which features a guest appearance by renowned Canadian guitarist Luke Doucet (Veal\, Sarah McLachlan)\, “Good Looking Country”\, a song inspired by Ridley’s one and only\, who he moved from Vancouver to Manitoba to be with\, and the album’s closing track “Burning Down Barns”\, on which every player in the band gets a chance to wail. \n \nAs ever\, there are quieter moments as well. Ridley’s never afraid to pepper his records with a few thoughts on love and loneliness – and his evolving cast of moonshine-running\, racecar-driving malcontents tend to know their way around the ladies as well as they do the back roads of the west. Of course these are love stories told the way only Ridley can; tracks that run the gamut from hard and bitter to hardly better\, including a beautifully rendered\, deliberately down-tempo take on the classic Dickey Lee song made famous by George Jones in 1962\, “She Thinks I Still Care”. \n \nWhile much of Ridley’s new material is drawn from real life experiences he’s gathered up on the road\, Rabbit On My Wheel still has its share of shady characters\, jackknifing tractor-trailers and whiskey-fuelled bar fights. And for those who identify strongly with Ridley’s less reasonable characters – the ones who tend to prefer to stir things up with a pistol in one hand and a bottle in the other – there’s The Blood Trilogy. A companion EP recorded during the same sessions and co-written with Dunn – a highly satisfying three-song western epic of violence and vengeance informed by Ridley’s ongoing fascination with the bleak worlds of writers like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. \n \nSimply put\, whether it’s love going strong but wrong in “Livin’ With Her Ex”\, the straight up hooks of the album’s title track\, or the three way struggle between Junior Johnson\, the whiskey and the wife\, on lead single\, “I Can’t Turn My Back On the Bottle”\, Rabbit On My Wheel has everything listeners have come to expect from Ridley Bent and more – A smoking twelve-song set chock full of fast cars\, fine looking ladies and fist fights that finds Ridley burning through a landscape of big country skies\, with one hand on the steering wheel and one eye on the bottle every mile of the way.

SUMMARY:Lavender Country
DESCRIPTION:Lavender Country at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, September 17\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nWhile Lavender Country (1973) was little known outside the Pacific Northwest and only released one self-distributed album\, they created a genuine cultural milestone; the first openly gay country album. Sponsored by the original Stonewall activists of the Gay Community Social Services of Seattle\, Lavender Country’s self-titled release was the brainchild of Patrick Haggerty\, whose experiences as a gay liberation activist during the Stonewall era shaped him into a tenacious political savant. Radically defying the conservative norms of country music\, Haggerty turned to Seattle’s gay community for song topics that addressed a wide range of political and social concerns\, including institutionalized oppression and divisions of the working class\, as well as more personal subjects such as the complications of intimacy and sexual identity. \nDespite the commitment of Haggerty and his bandmates to the cause\, the original group eventually fizzled out in 1976 when the democratic party took control of the movement and sidelined the radicals. Over four decades later the indie label Paradise of Bachelors discovered the album\, reissued it\, and shot Lavender Country into the stratosphere. With a new rotating lineup of musicians\, Haggerty began performing to a brand new generation of Lavender Country fans drawn to the band’s timeless message of queer liberation and revolution. Hundreds of opportunities emerged – gigs\, cross country tours\, collaborations\, scores of interviews with Dazed\, Pitchfork\, Rolling Stone\, and the likes. \nIn 2016\, Dan Taberski’s film “These C*cksucking Tears” Premiered at SXSW accompanied by a string of performances by the band. In 2017 and again in 2019\, Robert Dekkers’ Post:Ballet company staged a modern ballet performance of the original album\, performed in San Francisco with Lavender Country accompanying live. In recent years\, the band’s message has even resonated with contemporary queer country icons. Patrick has been invited to share the stage with the likes of Orville Peck and Trixie Mattel\, who covered the Lavender Country song “Stranger” on her 2020 Grammy nominated album\, “Barbara”. Hollywood director Robert Connolly wrote a screenplay for a full length film\, and is currently shopping for production funding. \nHaggerty\, now approaching age 77\, is stronger than ever. His shows are a unique combination of good country music\, sharp Marxist political critique\, and a huge lineup of incredible backup musicians across the country. Poignant emotions leave his audience laughing\, dancing\, and crying all at once. The current emergence of fascism and the deep political divisions in American culture are making Lavender Country a critical component of progressive and radical politics. \n—– \nThis show is presented in partnership with Pride Winnipeg.

SUMMARY:Laura Jane Grace
DESCRIPTION:MODO-LIVE x PROGRAMME Presents: Laura Jane Grace\n\n\nMODO-LIVE x PROGRAMME Presents:Laura Jane Gracew/ special guests \nSaturday\, September 17thPark TheatreWinnipeg\, MB \nDoors: 7 pm \nShow: 8 pmCurfew: 11:30 pm \nAll Ages \nBio:Laura Jane GraceAt War With The Silverfish“These are songs of late night madness and loneliness\, orphan songs that came wandering in looking to feed like insects\,” Laura Jane Grace says of her new EP. \nHalf recorded at Grace’s TinyQuietStudio in Chicago and half recorded at Electric Eel in St. Louis\, and mixed by her Devouring Mothers bandmate Marc Hudson\, At War With The Silverfish finds Grace in a range of stripped-back\, poignant modes that amount to an honest and holistic account of our shared humanity. Unafraid to spotlight open wounds and tangled feelings\, Grace conveys the distinctive pluck that has defined her work with Against Me! and The Devouring Mothers\, but with the intimate energy of home recording with an acoustic guitar. The album is not a clarion call\, but a tender invitation. It is a necessary capsule of a woman’s artistic pulse; love\, longing and loneliness told in affecting turns of phrase. \n“Three of hearts/Two of them are broken/One of them is gold/All of them are worthless\,” she sings on opener “Three of Hearts\,” admitting later that she’s the “…surest sucker that you’ll ever see.” This vulnerable posture drives much of that album\, like on “Lolo 13\,” where Grace pines for a love she never had\, and on “Yesterday Pt. II\,” where she remembers a lover’s goodbye with visceral intensity. “I know I sound insane\,” she repeats three times on the latter\, imparting anxiety and resolve at once. It’s a device she employs through the record\, deftly illustrating the mental gymnastics on the roads to self doubt and self acceptance. \nAmid the emotional outpouring are piercing scenes of isolated domestic life — the endless cups of reheated java (“Day Old Coffee”)\, the relief of reconnecting with an old friend (“Electro-Static Sweep”). And then there is her old friend\, Chicago\, a city by now her home but not without its pain points. “Way out here on the edge of oblivion/May as well be Skokie\, you’d have been so lucky for Berwyn\,” she sings on “Long Dark Night\,” surveying the landscape of her new Northside home\, not the “hip” part of town but one vital to its cultural diversity. \nReflecting on the album’s interiority\, Grace acknowledges the universal nature of many of its themes — how her highly personal accounts bloom into broader human connection. “I’ve learned that if you share your experience with good intentions that the universe will always surprise you with abundant return\,” she says. “Every song is an act of faith; you don’t necessarily know why you’re singing it other than you know you’ve got to sing it.” \nTicket Price: \nADV: $25.00
