SUMMARY:Katie Tupper
DESCRIPTION:Katie Tupper at the West End Cultural Centre – Monday\, September 19\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nBeneath the painted hues and infinite prairie skies of Saskatoon — a city in the heart of Canada — lies a soulful\, creative spirit that proves there’s much more to the so-called ‘fly-over states’ than grassland and grain silos. Katie Tupper\, a 24-year old neo-soul musician\, embodies that spirit and is determined to show there’s an entire world of boundary-pushing\, genre-defying artists at work within the often overlooked region. \nKatie Tupper unveiled her “fantastic” and “beautiful” debut single “Live Inside” with Zane Lowe\, Apple Music’s global creative director and host in September 2021. On “Live Inside\,” Tupper ruminates on notions of identity and what it means to let someone change your appearance\, to surrender into your relationship and allow your partner to become a piece of who you look like everyday. \n“How Can I Get Your Love?” Tupper’s second single\, rising in the CBC Music Top 20 chart\, currently at #7\, deals in a blanketing mixture of Neo-soul and exquisite folk\, seeming to speak for a region neglected all too often\, displaying just how richly her music roots through the native meadows and grasslands (or as she refers to them here\, “fields of butter”). It’s a song that at once speaks of all the possible partners we miss out on from sheer cluelessness\, and ultimately centers around a single\, great passion. \nThen in January of 2022\, Tupper released “Danny”\, a song with swelling strings and twinkling keys exquisitely backing up an instantly catchy\, syrupy drumline. Her voice soars over the track\, telling a story of heartbreak and resentment\, digging into that feeling of having so little left to lose that there’s hardly anything worth salvaging. \nAll songs are featured on her debut EP\, Towards The End\, coming out in February 2022 on Arts & Crafts.

SUMMARY:Joel Plaskett with Mo Kenney
DESCRIPTION:Joel Plaskett with Mo Kenny\n\n\nIn a world increasingly defined by disconnection under the guise of digital bonding\, Joel Plaskett is an analogue holdout\, making his most solid connections the old-fashioned way\, through the electrifying\, uplifting experience of his live shows. That doesn’t mean that heading out to get sweaty with a few hundred fellow good-timin’ strangers at your town’s most storied music venue is the only way to experience Plaskett’s tunes—the warmth and care with which he works shines through on his albums\, self-produced and recorded to tape at his New Scotland Yard studio in downtown Dartmouth\, whether you’re experiencing them on vinyl in your dim-lit living room or through headphones via MP3. But there’s no better spot than under the bright lights of the stage to catch one of Nova Scotia’s favourite sons\, shredding in reverie alongside his band\, The Emergency\, harmonizing with his dad\, Bill or spinning tales and songs on his own. \n \nYou can’t make a reputation for yourself as a world-class entertainer without hitting the road\, and there are few musicians who have tramped the globe like Plaskett has. That journey started in the early ‘90s with the playful and explosive Thrush Hermit and their signature neon ROCK & ROLL sign and hasn’t stopped (in fact\, the Hermit’s bright red light is soon to be lit up again with a cross-Canada reunion tour kicking off fall 2019). For over a quarter century\, Plaskett has delivered the masses intimate\, scrappy singer-songwriter fare (In Need of Medical Attention\, La De Da) incendiary riff-rock (Down at the Khyber\, Truthfully\, Truthfully) conceptual\, operatic epics and off-kilter feats of musical stamina (Ashtray Rock\, Three\, Scrappy Happiness) and a collection of left-leaning folk partly inspired by the genre’s British masters with his father (Solidarity). The last album he released under his own name\, 2015’s The Park Avenue Sobriety Test\, showed him at the top of his game\, using all the sounds in a wildly diverse musical toolbox. Rest assured that what’s coming next will be unexpected\, a new evolution for an artist who’s never stopped shifting and exploring his medium. \n \nJoel’s musical contributions go far beyond his own music\, too. Besides producing most of his own records since 1999\, he’s also set up shop behind the console at The New Scotland Yard studio\, along with engineer Thomas Stajcer\, to help craft a number of critically-acclaimed records for others. Working with artists like Jimmy Rankin\, Two Hours Traffic\, David Myles\, Shotgun Jimmie\, Dennis Ellsworth\, Sarah Slean\, Old Man Luedecke\, Dave Marsh\, Colleen Brown and longtime collaborator Mo Kenney has led to numerous awards for production and turned the studio into a popular destination for artists looking to make their mark. Out front\, just a stone’s throw from the studio\, lies The New Scotland Yard Emporium\, where Plaskett partnered with Halifax mainstay Taz Records to bring a great selection records to his adopted hometown of Dartmouth\, helping shape the future of Portland Street by building a spot music fans can hang out and grab a coffee or beer while they dig for records. \n \nSetting his impressive catalogue aside\, Plaskett’s legacy is in those communal experiences\, the ones that have fans old and new belting out his songs for a couple hours before they stumble wide-eyed onto the sidewalk outside the club\, buzzing with the life-affirming electricity that gets generated between the stage and the audience. \n \n— \n \nABOUT MO KENNEY \nMo Kenney never had that archetypal I-want-to-be-famous moment. But somehow she was always going to make albums\, play live and get noticed in her native Canada and way beyond. \n \nMaybe the clues were there in the way she saved up her lunch money to buy records\, begged her parents to book guitar lessons for her and made demos in the modest recording facility at a school she wasn’t even attending. Now\, Kenney’s brilliantly accomplished ‘In My Dreams\,’ one of Canada’s most acclaimed records of 2014\, is about to become one of the freshest and most inventive releases on the international stage this autumn. \n \nAnd stage is the word\, because the artist\, born in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, views staying on the road and playing for as many people as possible as her life’s work. The reward is in the recognition she’s enjoying from her discerning album audience. \n \n‘In My Dreams’ is already an award-winning follow-up to Kenney’s much-decorated\, self-titled debut of 2012. The new set swiftly secured an ECMA (East Coast Music Award) for Pop Recording of the Year\, to sit alongside the same trophy that was bestowed upon its predecessor\, which also took a Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and no fewer than three Nova Scotia Music Awards. \n \nThe sophomore set is produced\, as was Mo’s previous album\, by Joel Plaskett\, the Canadian rock icon who can fairly be described as her great mentor and key creative collaborator. It was recorded in his bespoke studio\, New Scotland Yard\, in Dartmouth\, Nova Scotia\, and for his label\, New Scotland Records. We’ll return to the story of Plaskett’s role in Kenney’s career shortly. \n \nIn an undeniable progression from the sometimes acoustic folk-pop of the first record\, the rockier framework of the new one reflects the fact that Mo is working more often with a band\, in the studio as on stage. It’s also a perfect showcase for her incisive lyricism. “That’s something that’s changed a lot from when I started writing\, when I guess there was a lot more covering up of the truth\,” she says. “I’m more direct now\, and I like it that way.” \n \n“When I’m writing\, I’m not thinking about people that are going to be listening to it\, which is helpful\, so I don’t have to worry about what I’m saying\, I just go and record it.” Indeed\, to borrow a phrase\, friends probably think this song or that song is about them. “Oh\, so many people say that to me\,” she laughs. “If it is\, I tell them.” \n \nThe album’s flagship song ‘Telephones’ arrives with a suitably engaging and amusing video and provides an imaginative take on the traditional romantic predicament. It was first written and recorded by Canadian East Coast rock band Mardeen in 2008\, and suggested by Plaskett as potentially rich material for Kenney. “I don’t think very many people knew of it\,” she says. “But it was kind of a perfect fit.” \n \nMo is now reaping the rewards of the musical inquisitiveness that started at an early age. She’ll happily admit to the poptastic pre-teen period we all go through\, when she momentarily favoured Danish hitmakers Aqua. There was even a stage when she was at home to hard rock\, in the form of AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. \n \nBut then Kenney realised that instead of just listening to the guitar\, she should be playing it. Unlike many artists who were dragged kicking and screaming to their first instrument\, she begged her parents to arrange guitar lessons for her. “I’m not sure why I wanted to play guitar so badly\,” she says. “I don’t even remember asking my mum to put me in lessons\, I was that young.” \n \n“My uncle had a guitar. He was the only person in my family that I knew of that had a musical instrument. I remember it would just be kicking around at family gatherings\, so I’d fiddle around on it. So maybe that’s why. But I was so obsessed with playing guitar when I first started\, I kind of assumed I’d be doing something with it later on in life. But I wasn’t sure what it would be.” \n \nAs her listening tastes developed alongside her own playing\, Mo began to empathise with one much-admired composer in particular. I didn’t really have a guitar idol when I was growing up\,” she says. “I only started listening to Elliott Smith when I was 14. That was the first kind of confessional songwriting I’d really heard. I was obsessed with him. I still am.” \n \nWhen she started to experiment with her music\, fate took a hand. “There were a few bands recording at this school in downtown Halifax\,” she recalls. “I didn’t go there\, but I knew some people who did. They had a little makeshift studio where everybody could just go in and make demos\, and Joel came to talk to us one day about the music industry\, trying to give us advice on being a musician.” \n \n“So we played him one of our songs each and that was it\, he went away. I think that was about 2007\, I showed him my song\, he really liked it and then I didn’t hear from him. In 2010\, I got a call from his manager\, who’s now my manager\, inviting me to a songwriting camp.” \n \n“Joel had recommended me\, and I hadn’t talked to him in three years. Actually\, it was my birthday. I was heading to work to go and make pizzas and I got a call. It made my day. I’d just been playing open-mic\, and that wasn’t really doing anything for me except helping me with my live show. I don’t know how I would have managed if it hadn’t been for Joel.” \n \nWhen Plaskett went on to sign Kenney to his label\, she had the platform from which to create that debut album\, and to find out about the music business. “It was a huge learning curve\,” she admits. “I had an idea in my mind what it was going to be like\, and it was totally different. I was just really fascinated by how everything works.” \n \nAs well as having toured in Canada with Plaskett\, Ron Sexsmith and extensively in her own right\, Mo is already no stranger to international audiences. She has played Iceland Airwaves\, The Great Escape and Green Man Festival in the UK\, where early in 2014\, she toured for six weeks with her good friend\, Scottish artist\, Rachel Sermanni. Kenney is heading back to Britain\, Ireland\, and Germany in support of ‘In My Dreams.’ The stage is literally set for her. \n \n“Besides writing\, the aspect of being a musician that I like most is playing live\,” says Kenney. “I love touring\, so if I can build up audiences all over the place\, then I can stay on the road forever\, which is what I want.”

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Champagne at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, September 23\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nThe young Australian virtuoso recently described as ‘the finest guitar player of this generation’ brings his tour back to Canada for the first time in three years! \nOne reviewer recently wrote “Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne is just magical” \nThe story goes that the young singer-songwriter and one of a kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing the dynamite live show that he is renowned for to-day. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road without looking back. \nThe following decade has seen him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. \nDaniel is now regarded as a leading light in acoustic music\, with a firm reputation for dropping jaws\, making crowds buzz and breaking guitars wherever he goes!

SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 24\, 2022 – Pierre Bensusan at the West End Cultural Centre – 8pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nAfter releasing ‘Azwan’\, an album about our oneness and interconnectivity in the midst of a unifying global crisis\, French-Algerian guitarist\, vocalist and composer\, Pierre Bensusan\, returns to the USA & Canada for completing the second leg of his nationwide 2022 Tour \nWhen Michael Hedges titiles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know the inspiration behind must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andres\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it’s not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre’s music\, as a recent studio collaboration on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show. \nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. Pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarist and composer for the instrument. Also called “The Prince of DADGAD”\, his story is far from trivial and it is on stage that the artist has earned his stripes! Among others\, the Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival\, elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. His triple album “Encore” won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album… Since his first performances in 1974 in France\, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe\, both solo and through numerous collaborations. \nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements: sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning\, an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed!

SUMMARY:Ben Sures
DESCRIPTION:Ben Sures at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, September 30\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nBen Sures is a storyteller. On his poignant\, natural-sounding acoustic 10th album\, The Story That Lived Here\, the Canada-based songwriter\, guitarist and author sings stories inspired by friends and fans and songs written by his own heart; songs about library ladies\, yard sales and dive bars\, accidents and grieving; and – because we’re living through a pandemic still – at least one song about the end of the world. \nSures’ 25-year-deep catalogue is eclectic\, spanning folk\, country\, jazz and rock’n’roll\, and borrowing from blues\, Sinti swing and West African guitar. But The Story That Lived Here\, recorded mostly live at Tobacco and Rose Studios in Victoria\, BC\, with old friends Richard Moody (viola\, violin\, mandolin and vocals) and Scott White (upright bass)\, and with Rebecca Campbell adding backup vocals and percussion remotely from Toronto\, is a satisfyingly cohesive and tender bluegrass-tinged album with a steady heartbeat. It’s the perfect accompaniment for Sures’ funny\, honest\, quirkily wise and wistful tunes. \n“In case it’s the end of the world\, I’m gonna have a cinnamon bun …” Sures quips to kick the record off\, addressing a universal desire for comfort going hand in hand with a newfound vulnerability. In “Before We Had Sarah” a couple with grown kids try to romantically reconnect (though they live in the same house); while “Boring People” is perhaps the most sparse\, evocative performance of Sures’ career to date. Nearly every song on The Story That Lived Here has a strong\, tender\, sing-along-able chorus\, including “Cry Like A Flood\,” which is Kat Goldman’s story of a music career interrupted; and “No One Will Remember You\,” which conjures cover bar culture. \nTwo of the songs on The Story That Lived Here are inspired by Sures’ relationship with his father\, ceramic artist Jack Sures\, who passed away in 2018 and who the album is dedicated to (along with Mitch Podolak\, Michael Laderoute\, and Thérèse Duffy). “We put so much stock into people at the end of their life\,” Sures says about the title track. “What was the last thing they said? The person is often on the wickedest cocktail of their life and they don’t know where they are. The meaningful time is the life.” \nIn “Father’s Shoes” Sures paints a portrait of his relationship with his father and finds an apt metaphor for grieving that could apply equally as well to his music: “they’re a funny combination of neon green and blues\,” he sings. The shoe fits. \n—– \nThis show is presented in partnership with Home Routes / Chemin Chez Nous.

It’s the beginning of a new era for the Toronto trio\, and the first of three pieces in a year-long puzzle\, which will be constructed over three separate releases.\n \n \nOn its own\, The Rise tells its own six-track story through Paul Banwatt’s thundering drums\, Amy Cole’s hammered keys and crystalline harmonies\, and Nils Edenloff’s furious acoustics and soaring\, wheaty tenor. At times\, it’s literal and visceral\, like the blowing dust of “Lifetime\,” or the hardy\, galloping roadtrip post-mortem of “3 Sisters\,” or the slow\, naked march of “Late September Snow.” At others it’s hallucinatory and surreal\, like the vivid\, crashing dreamscape of “10 Ft Tall.”\n \n \n“We’re so intrigued by the idea of different perspectives and memories in these songs\, and then this ultimate view of ‘Is any of it anything?’” says Cole.\n \n \nThat dichotomy — between what is assumed to be objective\, real and tangible\, and what is not — is explored by Alberta photographer Leroy Schulz’s work that accompanies the EP and lead singles “CANDU and “AB Bride.” Schulz flew drones over Alberta landscapes and took photos from above\, looking down on rows of fir trees\, barns\, crops\, and grass. From this perspective\, the settings look unrecognizable\, even unreal\, like some alien planet. The shapes\, shadows\, lines\, and textures are foreign\, yet these are scenes of home. “The harder you stare at something\, the more interesting it gets\,” says Banwatt\, “even something that seems really mundane.”\n \n \nThe past two years have upended all that we thought to be concrete. The Rise\, like this period\, is a complication of what we assume to be familiar and true and unchanging. It’s the start of something new.\n \n \n“We just go only based on heart and gut\, and try to let our minds get out of the way\, because more often than not those just trip us up\,” says Edenloff. \nOct 3rd\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm
