SUMMARY:Ben Sures
DESCRIPTION:Ben Sures at the West End Cultural Centre – Friday\, September 30\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nBen Sures is a storyteller. On his poignant\, natural-sounding acoustic 10th album\, The Story That Lived Here\, the Canada-based songwriter\, guitarist and author sings stories inspired by friends and fans and songs written by his own heart; songs about library ladies\, yard sales and dive bars\, accidents and grieving; and – because we’re living through a pandemic still – at least one song about the end of the world. \nSures’ 25-year-deep catalogue is eclectic\, spanning folk\, country\, jazz and rock’n’roll\, and borrowing from blues\, Sinti swing and West African guitar. But The Story That Lived Here\, recorded mostly live at Tobacco and Rose Studios in Victoria\, BC\, with old friends Richard Moody (viola\, violin\, mandolin and vocals) and Scott White (upright bass)\, and with Rebecca Campbell adding backup vocals and percussion remotely from Toronto\, is a satisfyingly cohesive and tender bluegrass-tinged album with a steady heartbeat. It’s the perfect accompaniment for Sures’ funny\, honest\, quirkily wise and wistful tunes. \n“In case it’s the end of the world\, I’m gonna have a cinnamon bun …” Sures quips to kick the record off\, addressing a universal desire for comfort going hand in hand with a newfound vulnerability. In “Before We Had Sarah” a couple with grown kids try to romantically reconnect (though they live in the same house); while “Boring People” is perhaps the most sparse\, evocative performance of Sures’ career to date. Nearly every song on The Story That Lived Here has a strong\, tender\, sing-along-able chorus\, including “Cry Like A Flood\,” which is Kat Goldman’s story of a music career interrupted; and “No One Will Remember You\,” which conjures cover bar culture. \nTwo of the songs on The Story That Lived Here are inspired by Sures’ relationship with his father\, ceramic artist Jack Sures\, who passed away in 2018 and who the album is dedicated to (along with Mitch Podolak\, Michael Laderoute\, and Thérèse Duffy). “We put so much stock into people at the end of their life\,” Sures says about the title track. “What was the last thing they said? The person is often on the wickedest cocktail of their life and they don’t know where they are. The meaningful time is the life.” \nIn “Father’s Shoes” Sures paints a portrait of his relationship with his father and finds an apt metaphor for grieving that could apply equally as well to his music: “they’re a funny combination of neon green and blues\,” he sings. The shoe fits. \n—– \nThis show is presented in partnership with Home Routes / Chemin Chez Nous.

SUMMARY:The Rural Alberta Advantage
DESCRIPTION:Standing room only. Limited accessible seating available.\n\n\nThe Rise\, the new EP from The Rural Alberta Advantage\, is the first word in a conversation\, the first step on a new\, unkept trail. It’s the beginning of a new era for the Toronto trio\, and the first of three pieces in a year-long puzzle\, which will be constructed over three separate releases.\n \n \nOn its own\, The Rise tells its own six-track story through Paul Banwatt’s thundering drums\, Amy Cole’s hammered keys and crystalline harmonies\, and Nils Edenloff’s furious acoustics and soaring\, wheaty tenor. At times\, it’s literal and visceral\, like the blowing dust of “Lifetime\,” or the hardy\, galloping roadtrip post-mortem of “3 Sisters\,” or the slow\, naked march of “Late September Snow.” At others it’s hallucinatory and surreal\, like the vivid\, crashing dreamscape of “10 Ft Tall.”\n \n \n“We’re so intrigued by the idea of different perspectives and memories in these songs\, and then this ultimate view of ‘Is any of it anything?’” says Cole.\n \n \nThat dichotomy — between what is assumed to be objective\, real and tangible\, and what is not — is explored by Alberta photographer Leroy Schulz’s work that accompanies the EP and lead singles “CANDU and “AB Bride.” Schulz flew drones over Alberta landscapes and took photos from above\, looking down on rows of fir trees\, barns\, crops\, and grass. From this perspective\, the settings look unrecognizable\, even unreal\, like some alien planet. The shapes\, shadows\, lines\, and textures are foreign\, yet these are scenes of home. “The harder you stare at something\, the more interesting it gets\,” says Banwatt\, “even something that seems really mundane.”\n \n \nThe past two years have upended all that we thought to be concrete. The Rise\, like this period\, is a complication of what we assume to be familiar and true and unchanging. It’s the start of something new.\n \n \n“We just go only based on heart and gut\, and try to let our minds get out of the way\, because more often than not those just trip us up\,” says Edenloff. \nOct 3rd\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm

SUMMARY:New Wales
DESCRIPTION:New Wales at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, October 8\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nIn the throes of raising a combined 12 children (including triplets)\, muddling their way through adult corporate land\, building violins\, and putting out actual fires\, New Wales have taken the pressures of day-to-day life and turned it into an impressive creative pace. The indie rock band is made up of Winnipeg music scene stalwarts. Lead singers David Pankratz (Quinzy\, Federal Lights) and Sandy Taronno (Quinzy\, Indicator Indicator) are joined by Rusty Robot (Rusty Robot\, Imaginary Cities)\, Matthew Harder (Spirit of the West)\, Christy Taronno (Paper Machetes)\, and Conally MacLean. \nOver the past year the band has released 8 singles along with accompanying videos\, wrote and have nearly finished recording a new album (produced by Rusty Matyas)\, signed a music placement deal with Dawn Patrol Music\, and were recently nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for ‘Rock Artist of the Year’. \nThe 8 singles and videos released over the past year\, along with strong\, sold-out shows in their hometown of Winnipeg\, MB have helped the band develop a solid\, loyal fan-base and the band looks forward to using that momentum to launch their upcoming Spring 2023 album release.

SUMMARY:Kacy and Clayton
DESCRIPTION:Kacy and Clayton are a Saskatchewanian psychedelic folk duo. Farm-fed and world-traveled. Dig it.\n\n\nThe music Kacy and Clayton make is inextricable from where they grew up. They sing about the kind of people you’d find in Wood Mountain\, Saskatchewan (population very few). The hills\, barns and remoteness of the area are in these songs\, with a bittersweet acknowledgement that this music has taken them far from home.

SUMMARY:The Deep Dark Woods
DESCRIPTION:The Deep Dark Woods at the West End Cultural Centre – Sunday\, October 9\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \n“The air in the house is different now\,” says Ryan Boldt\, the creative force behind The Deep Dark Woods. Boldt’s house is now full of pets and plants\, and happiness. It’s a house by the ocean\, far from the rural prairie landscapes of his childhood and a defining feature of The Deep Dark Woods’ sound and lyrics. The house is also an emotional dwelling\, an inner place for processing upheaval\, finding new direction and making peace with the past. On Changing Faces\, The Deep Dark Woods’ sixth album\, Boldt works through the complications\, unique to him and recognizable to many\, of leaving one place for the next. \nOn Changing Faces\, you will be surprised by how gradual yet complete a turn The Deep Dark Woods have made from cabin cozy jam band to pan-Atlantic folk revivalist collective. Boldt’s delicate melodies and metallic-stringed bite rattle centuries-old folkloric ghosts and personal demons alike. The Deep Dark Woods\, a band with few fixed members\, is a vessel for Boldt\, keyboard wonder Geoff Hilhorst and frequent collaborators\, Kacy & Clayton and Evan Cheadle\, among others\, to find their own vocabulary for translating traditional folk forms – Irish waltzes\, Broadside Ballads\, ominous lullabies – to contemporary electric terms. \nStandout track “How Could I Ever Be Single Again\,” featuring Kacy & Clayton\, haunts with a gently lilting lament. The bittersweet melancholy of “Everything Reminds Me\,” is brought into focus with its accompanying video\, out today. Directed by Craig Range\, the video reminds us\, in fact\, that all of life’s small daily rituals add up to something profound and beautiful. The addition of strings\, arranged and performed by Russian composer and violinist Maria Grigoryeva\, carve the song’s deep longing with graceful swells and swirls. \nThroughout Changing Faces\, there is a push and pull between place and placelessness. In the modulated Farfisa churn-up of 50s doo wop on album opener\, “Treacherous Waters\,” and the dizzying experimental pastoral voyage of “In The Meadow\,” arrangements layer the familiar with the disorienting. Lyrically\, the homesick headspin of “When I Get Home Tonight” explores the feeling of not knowing where you belong. With Changing Faces\, Boldt arrives in a new place\, the culmination of a project both historical and personal.

SUMMARY:Still Crazy - The Music of Paul Simon
DESCRIPTION:Still Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon – Thursday\, October 13\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nStill Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon\, a flagship concert experience from Retrospective Productions\, featuring nine world class musicians paying homage to one of the most celebrated American songwriters. \nStill Crazy is a powerhouse retrospective on the life\, career\, and music of Paul Simon. The show draws heavily on the most acclaimed era of his career\, from his self-titled album\, Paul Simon in 1972 through to 1990 with The Rhythm of the Saints\, however it doesn’t fail to include fan favourites from his seminal work as a part of the Hall of Fame folk-duo\, Simon and Garfunkel. Whether a long-time fan or a first time listener\, there is truly something here for everyone. The dyanmics of the show range from whisper-quiet\, intimate moments\, where the band breaks down to only voice and accoustic guitar\, and climb all the way to the full-out\, horn section-led dance anthems from the hit album\, Graceland. \nThe show was thoughtfully curated and carefully arranged by up-and-coming producer\, Aaron Shorr. Shorr is a life-long fan of Paul Simon and the creation of this show was truly a labour of love. “This is music that has been with me since I was a young kid… When I was in high school I got my driver’s license and I had a copy of the Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. I listened to it in the car\, over and over\, I must have worn the tape out. Later on I got really into the record Still Crazy After All These Years. It became a record that I listened to constantly. I listened to it when I got my heart broken\, listened to it when I got my bell rung… It became one of those albums that I could turn to\, like a magic pill. Albums like that become your friends.” \nThe orchestrations and the approach to the music capture that same respect and reverence. There are subtle turns and re-imaginings\, but all are deeply influenced by a tremendous amount of research. In preparation for the show\, Aaron poured through every album Paul Simon had ever been a part of\, including all the live recordings he could find\, from official concerts to bootlegs. He read and re-read every article\, book\, interview\, and biography. Finally\, to cap it off\, Aaron flew to New York to attend the very last stops on Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour. The penultimate at Madison Square Gardens and the very last tour date of his career in Flushing\, Queens\, in the very same neighbourhood that Paul was born and raised. \nWith Paul Simon’s retirement from from the road in September of 2018\, the curtain falls on one of the most illustrious recording and touring careers in modern music. Still Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon\, is poised to grab the torch and carry his legacy onwards.

SUMMARY:The Windups plus Eugene Ripper
DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg’s favourite pub rock party band along with legendary folk-punk pioneer Eugene Ripper!\n\n\nEUGENE RIPPER \nCanadian Punk Pioneer \nTrailblazing Fast Folk Rocker \n \nAfter cutting his rock and roll teeth as a founding guitarist in first wave Canadian surf punkabilly rockers\, Stark Naked & The Fleshtones \, Ripper launched into a solo career that continues to this day featuring a synthesis of punk\, folk\, roots and rock. \n \nFrom barbed fast’ n’ furious acoustic punk folk\, rock n roll\, sonic atmospherics\, lyrical dark ballads and beat driven spoken word\, \nRipper wraps it all up in post modern stance and punk rock ethos. \n \n“Volleying between punk\, folk and rock Ripper jumps all over each style\, stealing from one and reshaping another until he comes up \nwith a unique sound and vibe all his own.” \nNow Magazine (Toronto) \n \n“Since his time in ’80s punk faves Stark Naked and The Fleshtones\, Eugene Ripper has transformed himself into a top-notch alt-folk singer/songwriter. His Fast Folk Underground series has had residencies in NYC\, Halifax and Vancouver. His rollicking\, garage-rock influenced sound meshes significantly with thoughtful and poetically intense ballads.” \nNew Canadian Music \n \n“Toronto’s underexposed gem Eugene Ripper has been honing his unique brand of fast-folk with a punk rock ethos since the early ’90s. Don’t miss a chance to be transported to his noir universe.” \nPop Montreal \n \n” Roots rock rebel summons up visions of film noir and spaghetti western and Johnny Cash ” \nHalifax Herald \n \n” Eugene Ripper has firmly cemented a place for himself at the forefront of Canada’s indie underground since kicking off his long-running career in the thick of ’80s punk\, an influence that has remained evident in Ripper’s more recent folk work” \nVue Weekly (Edmonton) \n \n“His neo acoustic tales of near death\, trains\, outlaws\, love gone bad\, and freedom merge with an acute case of intense live energy. Ripper arrives somewhere between John Prine and The Ramones.” \nMariposa Folk Festival \n \n“One of Canada’s most respected yet underexposed songwriters.” \nToronto Star \n \n“Ripper puts spikes back in folk music.” \nVancouver Province \n \n“Few can turn a couple of chords into something majestic\, \nRipper has the gift.” \nOttawa Citizen \n \n \nYouTube Images Bio Contact Facebook Bandcamp
