DESCRIPTION:Remember how awesome it was when we last teamed up with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra?  \nWe loved it so much we are doing it again!  \nWe are excited to announce that for our next event we are presenting the opening night of the Winnipeg New Music Festival!  \nThe main concert of the night is Meredith Monk’s Canadian premiere of Weave for two voices\, and the WORLD Premiere of Christos Hatzis’ Syn-Phonia: Migration Patterns.  \nBut the concert isn’t the only big thing going on\, we have a full night of art and experiences in store for you.  \nFriday Knights Clothing & Accessories is teaming up with Panache Management to put on a stellar fashion show. Zephyra Vun\, creator of anARCHI design who curated the last “The Winnipeg Design Festival”\, is curating an art installation\, photography installation\, and furniture display. We have DJs from MEMETIC and DJs Lauren Barnett (G-Ma Feelgood)\, and Kalliane Brémault playing the best tunes.  \nLater in the night\, prepare for an improvised performance and exchange by B-boys and contemporary dancers.   \nBit Space Development is also going to be set up with an interactive virtual reality art space. Have you ever painted in thin air before? They went in with the lake still covered by ice and emerged 4 weeks later\, in the first days of spring\, bearing with them new music… \nIn co-producer Graham Walsh of H*ly F*ck\, the band found not just a kindred spirit\, but someone willing to lead them away from well-trodden paths and into new\, uncertain terrain: “Graham always pushed the sonic elements of the songs to the limit…tweaking sounds until they contributed more than just the sum of their parts…using sound to create emotion in the same way that words and melody can\,” says SRB frontman and songwriter\, Sam Roberts. “Not to mention that he was forced to live under the same roof as us and lived to tell the tale!” \nThe album takes flight with the title track TerraForm\, a story of escape from the ashes of a dying world. “Terraforming is the idea of going to another planet and making it viable for humans. For this record\, I saw it as planting the seeds for that same sort of renewal in your own life – that regardless of how much you have broken the parts of your life along the way\, there is always a chance to start over… for yourself and the people you care about” says Roberts. “Most of these songs are love songs\, but love songs that grapple with it’s many faces – beautiful and ugly\, healing and destructive.” \nFIEND looks back through the years\, identifying LOVE as the one constant that binds us\, while Black Spark shine’s light on the cryptic\, shadowy web that love can weave in both heart and mind. Tourist Trap takes on a cosmic love triangle between constellations\, just as the House Inside holds up an unclouded mirror to the daily reality of making a family work. “It’s about never giving up on your family\, no matter what life throws at you or whatever paths\, destructive or not\, you choose to walk as an individual – you have to recognize that it all comes back to the people you’re sharing your life with\,” Roberts says. \nIf the TerraForm story begins in the dust and ashes and the quest for a new home\, the lead single If You Want It speaks to the self-destructive forces that helped drive us towards calamity. “The protagonist of the song\, compelled by greed and driven to crime\, embarks on a trip to hell…and hopefully back again\,” says Roberts. In Roll With The Spirits\, we are duped by the soothing promises of a Snake-Oil peddler\, selling happiness by the pound…Things break down\, then they crack. The album closes with Spring Fever and the sounds of life bubbling back to the surface. We’ve come full-circle\, we have a chance to do it all over again. To be honest\, I don’t really listen to a lot of rock music right now.” \nThat’s not a radical statement for your average twenty-something in this EDM-dominated era\, but it’s a bit surprising coming from a guitar-slinging guy whose band seemingly personifies a certain old-school\, ethic. Hailing from the gritty industrial outpost of Hamilton\, Ontario\, the Arkells have notched four Juno Awards and a gold record on their sweat-rusted belts\, proving there’s still a place for passionate\, no-bullshit rock ‘n’ soul in the mainstream. (In 2015\, they were the most-played band on Canadian alt-rock radio.) But the group’s new album\, Morning Report\, betrays a more irreverent\, adventurous ethos that more readily recalls the cut-and-paste approach of hip-hop beatmakers than the plug-and-play attack of a live rock band\, with click-tracked rhythms\, subliminal samples\, electronic pulses\, and sax and violins threaded into the richly textured mix. \nCertainly\, this is the Arkells’ most eclectic album to date\, from the piano-pounded\, “California Love”-schooled swagger of “Private School” to the silver-lined break-up song “My Heart’s Always Yours\,” the sort of ascendant\, blood-pumping anthem you can easily imagine sparking an arena full of waving illuminated smartphones. But if the Arkells have mostly scrubbed away the surface soot of their Hamilton-spawned sound\, lyrically\, Kerman’s songwriting hits even closer to home. \n“A lot of the songs are about me and characters in my life: my friends\, my parents\, my girlfriend\,” Kerman says. “And a lot of times\, they’re songs about what happened the night before. So that’s why it’s called Morning Report: you text your friend the next day and it’s like\, ‘Give me the morning report!’” \nBut Morning Report balances tales of last night’s debauchery with more sobering examinations of a time in life that doesn’t get much play in rock music: your late-twenties. It’s the phase when all your friends start getting married\, your parents suddenly decide to get divorced\, and long-distance relationships hit their shit-or-get-off-the-pot breaking point. But while melancholic\, meditative ballads like “Passenger Seat” and “Come Back Home” provide unflinching portraits of marriages on the brink of collapse\, rousing\, soul-powered sing-alongs like “A Little Rain” pay poignant tribute to the friendships that help you through the tough times\, and provide that much-needed shoulder to cry on. \n“That’s another thing that’s so conservative about white-guy indie rock\,” says Kerman. “What makes Drake so awesome is he just puts all his emotions right on the table for you to see.
