Throughout his two inventive EPs\, Get Layd and What Have We Done\, his lithe voice unravels tales that range from introspective to romantic to gratifyingly explicit\, expertly laid over lush and soulful instrumentals. Layered with vivid scenarios and heartfelt confessions\, Omah Lay’s rich music not only depicts a young man daring to reveal his grittiest vices and innermost feelings\, but also doubles as a fascinating window into Afro-fusion’s bright and expansive future. \nWith two EPs and over a billion streams\, Omah Lay is one of the new frontrunners of Afrobeats taking the world by storm.

SUMMARY:Still Crazy - The Music of Paul Simon
DESCRIPTION:Still Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon – Thursday\, October 13\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nStill Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon\, a flagship concert experience from Retrospective Productions\, featuring nine world class musicians paying homage to one of the most celebrated American songwriters. \nStill Crazy is a powerhouse retrospective on the life\, career\, and music of Paul Simon. The show draws heavily on the most acclaimed era of his career\, from his self-titled album\, Paul Simon in 1972 through to 1990 with The Rhythm of the Saints\, however it doesn’t fail to include fan favourites from his seminal work as a part of the Hall of Fame folk-duo\, Simon and Garfunkel. Whether a long-time fan or a first time listener\, there is truly something here for everyone. The dyanmics of the show range from whisper-quiet\, intimate moments\, where the band breaks down to only voice and accoustic guitar\, and climb all the way to the full-out\, horn section-led dance anthems from the hit album\, Graceland. \nThe show was thoughtfully curated and carefully arranged by up-and-coming producer\, Aaron Shorr. Shorr is a life-long fan of Paul Simon and the creation of this show was truly a labour of love. “This is music that has been with me since I was a young kid… When I was in high school I got my driver’s license and I had a copy of the Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. I listened to it in the car\, over and over\, I must have worn the tape out. Later on I got really into the record Still Crazy After All These Years. It became a record that I listened to constantly. I listened to it when I got my heart broken\, listened to it when I got my bell rung… It became one of those albums that I could turn to\, like a magic pill. Albums like that become your friends.” \nThe orchestrations and the approach to the music capture that same respect and reverence. There are subtle turns and re-imaginings\, but all are deeply influenced by a tremendous amount of research. In preparation for the show\, Aaron poured through every album Paul Simon had ever been a part of\, including all the live recordings he could find\, from official concerts to bootlegs. He read and re-read every article\, book\, interview\, and biography. Finally\, to cap it off\, Aaron flew to New York to attend the very last stops on Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour. The penultimate at Madison Square Gardens and the very last tour date of his career in Flushing\, Queens\, in the very same neighbourhood that Paul was born and raised. \nWith Paul Simon’s retirement from from the road in September of 2018\, the curtain falls on one of the most illustrious recording and touring careers in modern music. Still Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon\, is poised to grab the torch and carry his legacy onwards.

SUMMARY:The Windups plus Eugene Ripper
DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg’s favourite pub rock party band along with legendary folk-punk pioneer Eugene Ripper!\n\n\nEUGENE RIPPER \nCanadian Punk Pioneer \nTrailblazing Fast Folk Rocker \n \nAfter cutting his rock and roll teeth as a founding guitarist in first wave Canadian surf punkabilly rockers\, Stark Naked & The Fleshtones \, Ripper launched into a solo career that continues to this day featuring a synthesis of punk\, folk\, roots and rock. \n \nFrom barbed fast’ n’ furious acoustic punk folk\, rock n roll\, sonic atmospherics\, lyrical dark ballads and beat driven spoken word\, \nRipper wraps it all up in post modern stance and punk rock ethos. \n \n“Volleying between punk\, folk and rock Ripper jumps all over each style\, stealing from one and reshaping another until he comes up \nwith a unique sound and vibe all his own.” \nNow Magazine (Toronto) \n \n“Since his time in ’80s punk faves Stark Naked and The Fleshtones\, Eugene Ripper has transformed himself into a top-notch alt-folk singer/songwriter. His Fast Folk Underground series has had residencies in NYC\, Halifax and Vancouver. His rollicking\, garage-rock influenced sound meshes significantly with thoughtful and poetically intense ballads.” \nNew Canadian Music \n \n“Toronto’s underexposed gem Eugene Ripper has been honing his unique brand of fast-folk with a punk rock ethos since the early ’90s. Don’t miss a chance to be transported to his noir universe.” \nPop Montreal \n \n” Roots rock rebel summons up visions of film noir and spaghetti western and Johnny Cash ” \nHalifax Herald \n \n” Eugene Ripper has firmly cemented a place for himself at the forefront of Canada’s indie underground since kicking off his long-running career in the thick of ’80s punk\, an influence that has remained evident in Ripper’s more recent folk work” \nVue Weekly (Edmonton) \n \n“His neo acoustic tales of near death\, trains\, outlaws\, love gone bad\, and freedom merge with an acute case of intense live energy. Ripper arrives somewhere between John Prine and The Ramones.” \nMariposa Folk Festival \n \n“One of Canada’s most respected yet underexposed songwriters.” \nToronto Star \n \n“Ripper puts spikes back in folk music.” \nVancouver Province \n \n“Few can turn a couple of chords into something majestic\, \nRipper has the gift.” \nOttawa Citizen \n \n \nYouTube Images Bio Contact Facebook Bandcamp

SUMMARY:PIQSIQ
DESCRIPTION:PIQSIQ at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, October 22\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \n“Kayley Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik are Inuit style throat singers performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions.” \nWith a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty\, sisters\, Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay\, come together to create Inuit style throat singing duo\, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions\, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “what is the meaning of life.” \nWith roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq Regions\, the sisters grew up in Yellowknife\, NWT\, where endless sunlight shines for two short summer months and deep\, wintery darkness consumes the rest of the year. These environmental extremes had a huge impact on Tiffany and Kayley’s overall aesthetic and the pair have always engrossed themselves in creating soundtracks to life that reflect this natural phenomenon. \nKayley and Tiffany loved to practice throat singing during long trips out on the land\, but keeping connected to their Inuit culture was challenging in Yellowknife where they did not always have access to the cultural teachings they craved. The sisters have often reminisced about the feelings they would get when receiving cassette tape parcels by mail sent from cousins living in Nunavut. Each tape a carefully recorded lesson containing precious\, ancient throat songs delivered by brown\, paper package. After years of forging hard won skill\, they developed their own form blended with their love of haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds. \nAs the sisters approached adulthood they continued to learn about Inuit history and the abhorrent laws instituted by the Canadian Government under Colonization. They were devastated to discover how throat singing was regarded as an evil practice by the church\, along with many other cultural Indigenous practices. By the 1960s\, through shaming\, banning and punishment by law in the forms of fines and detainment\, throat singing had all but gone extinct. This realization lead them to study throat singing not only as music\, but as a radical\, political act of decolonization and cultural revitalization. The sisters’ journey has culminated in a dynamic\, modern expression that is born out of the ancient practice of a living\, changing\, growing culture of an incredibly resourceful people. \nPIQSIQ’s name stems from the sisters’ shared feelings of confusion regarding their identities growing up. In Inuktut\, a “piqsiq” is a type of storm where winds blow in a very specific way\, making it look like the snow is falling back up towards the sky. Being children of blended backgrounds\, born into two very different worlds\, Kayley and Tiffany always felt they had to navigate strange cultural waters\, but have learned to embrace the joys and challenges of mixed Indigeneity today. The sisters have found comfort in the thought that “two halves make a whole.” Whatever way it’s falling\, snow is snow and true to their name\, PIQSIQ is dedicated to mixing things up. \nKayley and Tiffany have performed many traditional style sets over the last two decades\, and in more recent years have taken the dive into blending their style with new technology. Their live performances\, in alignment with throat singing’s original form\, take inspiration from the world around them combined with their own thoughts and feelings and an invitation to the audience to help steer the journey songs will take. Creating performances this way allows the audience to experience spontaneous compositions that are unique to each individual show. \nAs PIQSIQ\, they perform improvisational looping live and have incorporated that haunting\, ethereal feel into their debut album Altering the Timeline. The direction for the album sparked during a spontaneous jam session with Ruby Singh next to the Bow River at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in the summer of 2018. As the sisters throat sang\, Ruby beat-boxed and with this first collaboration ideas began to flow. Two short months later the trio found their way back together and converged at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studio. It was here that they began putting together the sounds that would become Altering the Timeline. \nPIQSIQ continues to perform both nationally and internationally. Kayley and Tiffany are excited for the magic to continue as they seek out new collaborations and further develop their entrancing style.

SUMMARY:Mariel Buckley plus Andrina Turenne
DESCRIPTION:” I don’t know if it’s Buckley’s dream to be an essential new voice in Canadian music\, but she is. Everywhere I Used to Be proves it! – CBC\n\n\n\n“There’s a grit to Mariel Buckley’s voice that can’t be manufactured with studio wizardry. She can hit heavenly registers\, but always with a tinge of angst\, like tasting a bit of coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup of velvety coffee\, the mark of handcrafted majesty.” – Edmonton Journal \n \n“…her sophomore slam-dunk…a synth country masterpiece” – No Depression \n” is an improbable palette. But that it all works to such brilliant effectis a testament to Buckley’s particular gift as a songwriter: to reach into the shadowed places between worlds whose edges don’t quite line up\, and find a way to call them home.” – Country Queer \n“Don’t let Mariel Buckley’s twang and the moaning pedal steel that opens “Shooting At The Moon” fool you. This is no laid-back two step ditty. It’s pure fire\, a rock and roller driven by guitars dripping reverb and a freight train rhythm section hell bent on jumping the tracks. Our alt-country-loving neighbors in Canada have known about Buckley since she began gathering laurels after the release of her first record back in 2018. It’s about time we start paying attention down here.” – Blue Ridge Outdoors

SUMMARY:David Myles Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Park Theatre Proudly Presents\n\n\nDavid Myles Trio \nThe Park Theatre \nMonday\, October 24th\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm \nTickets are $20 plus fees in advance. \n \nThe Park welcomes back\, David Myles to our Stage Monday\, October 24th\, 2022 \nlove the people we love—so often keep us awake at the end of the day\, at a loss for answers. From the plaintive opening notes of David Myles’ It’s Only a Little Loneliness\, the New Brunswick-based songwriter testifies that he’s no exception: “I could try to explain what goes on in my brain\, but I’d have to pretend that I knew\,” he sings on “Certain.” On his introspective 15th studio album\, Myles establishes himself as a seeker—of paths\, of new sonic expressions\, of God. Concrete answers\, however\, elude him the same as they elude the rest of us. All of that seeking reveals one clear conclusion\, though: we are bound to each other. “But it’s late at night\, and I’m reaching for the light\,” he continues over soft\, arpeggiated guitar on the album’s opening track. “And I want to spend my whole life with you.” \n“It’s the kind of thing you say to yourself when you’re feeling a bit down: ‘It’s only a little loneliness\,’” Myles says about the album’s title on a drive through northern New Brunswick. “But then at the same time\, you know—it’s actually quite a big thing. It’s overwhelming. You try to tell yourself it’s not a big deal but it feels quite fundamental. And you realize\, ‘I need people. I need a community. I need my friends. I need my family.” \nThat’s clear from songs like the sweet “If I Lost You\,” simultaneously uplifting and heavy as Myles deals with the fact that everything must end\, and what that means for relationships based in love. On the smoky “Mystery\,” he addresses the enigmatic magnetism of opposites attracting\, reminding listeners that those who are different from us broaden our perspectives and make our lives richer. \nSometimes it takes something massive\, though—a rending of the fabric of one’s reality—to see our interdependence on one another clearly enough to inspire profound changes. In 2018\, Myles came down with a sudden illness that had him worried that his life and ability to make music were in jeopardy; in 2020\, the world changed overnight\, upending his life and career along with everyone else. “My worst fear was to have the career drop\,” Myles says. “And then\, for reasons beyond my control\, it dropped for me. And I didn’t die. And it didn’t all fall apart.” \nIt took a lot of soul-searching to get to this point\, where he could look back on the past few years and understand what it had taught him. During this period his bandwidth for putting on any kind of airs was completely depleted\, and he realized that with the time he has\, he has to be 100% himself\, which meant following those thoughts that kept him up at night\, learning how to best express them\, and confronting them through music. “All of a sudden\, I could talk about God in my songs\, and I could talk about the mystery of relationships and love and confusion and loneliness\,” Myles says. \nIn 2021\, the Juno-nominated album That Tall Distance offered an instrumental expression of Myles’ feelings about these questions. It’s Only a Little Loneliness brings his voice and words into the mix\, using the same recording approach\, with each contributing player afforded as much time as they need to lay down their parts at home and complete the picture. The result is a collection that flows naturally\, a whole that proves more than the sum of its dynamic and singular parts. \nFor Myles\, it was imperative that percussion form the beating heart of the record\, and Joshua Van Tassel’s intricate work drives songs like “Walk With Me\,” as Myles seeks to fill \nhis spiritual void. The virtuosic Leith Fleming-Smith appears on organ and Wurlitzer\, and Asa Brosius provides the dreamy title track dobro solo and gossamer pedal steel for the cover of country heartbreak standard “Making Believe.” Elsewhere\, Dean Brouillard provides the crucial low end on bass; Andrew Jackson blows trombone; and Aaron Davis provides the glowing piano work on curtain-closer “Solitaire.” \nAll over the album\, the voices of dear friends—Rose Cousins (“Making Believe”)\, Breagh Isabel (“If I Lost You”)\, and Reeny and Haliey Smith (“Mystery\,” “Walk With Me\,” and the slinky and soulful “You Can’t Hurt Me”)—drive home that important sentiment: we need each other to get through\, even if it’s just a little loneliness. \nOver these past years of isolation\, Myles has continued to seek connection via his “not-so-late night talk show” Myles From Home on YouTube\, which has since become a popular podcast by the same name. Myles From Home has featured a diverse selection of guests including Jeremy Dutcher\, Shad\, Alex Cuba\, Bahamas\, and Ria Mae. The podcast is just another feather in the multifaceted cap of Myles’ career\, which includes numerous awards and accolades\, a robust artist profile stateside\, a 2018 children’s book called Santa Never Brings Me a Banjo\, and the biggest-selling rap single in the history of Canadian music\, “Inner Ninja\,” a cross-genre musical collaboration with rapper Classified.
