SUMMARY:PIQSIQ
DESCRIPTION:PIQSIQ at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, October 22\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \n“Kayley Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik are Inuit style throat singers performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions.” \nWith a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty\, sisters\, Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay\, come together to create Inuit style throat singing duo\, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions\, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “what is the meaning of life.” \nWith roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq Regions\, the sisters grew up in Yellowknife\, NWT\, where endless sunlight shines for two short summer months and deep\, wintery darkness consumes the rest of the year. These environmental extremes had a huge impact on Tiffany and Kayley’s overall aesthetic and the pair have always engrossed themselves in creating soundtracks to life that reflect this natural phenomenon. \nKayley and Tiffany loved to practice throat singing during long trips out on the land\, but keeping connected to their Inuit culture was challenging in Yellowknife where they did not always have access to the cultural teachings they craved. The sisters have often reminisced about the feelings they would get when receiving cassette tape parcels by mail sent from cousins living in Nunavut. Each tape a carefully recorded lesson containing precious\, ancient throat songs delivered by brown\, paper package. After years of forging hard won skill\, they developed their own form blended with their love of haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds. \nAs the sisters approached adulthood they continued to learn about Inuit history and the abhorrent laws instituted by the Canadian Government under Colonization. They were devastated to discover how throat singing was regarded as an evil practice by the church\, along with many other cultural Indigenous practices. By the 1960s\, through shaming\, banning and punishment by law in the forms of fines and detainment\, throat singing had all but gone extinct. This realization lead them to study throat singing not only as music\, but as a radical\, political act of decolonization and cultural revitalization. The sisters’ journey has culminated in a dynamic\, modern expression that is born out of the ancient practice of a living\, changing\, growing culture of an incredibly resourceful people. \nPIQSIQ’s name stems from the sisters’ shared feelings of confusion regarding their identities growing up. In Inuktut\, a “piqsiq” is a type of storm where winds blow in a very specific way\, making it look like the snow is falling back up towards the sky. Being children of blended backgrounds\, born into two very different worlds\, Kayley and Tiffany always felt they had to navigate strange cultural waters\, but have learned to embrace the joys and challenges of mixed Indigeneity today. The sisters have found comfort in the thought that “two halves make a whole.” Whatever way it’s falling\, snow is snow and true to their name\, PIQSIQ is dedicated to mixing things up. \nKayley and Tiffany have performed many traditional style sets over the last two decades\, and in more recent years have taken the dive into blending their style with new technology. Their live performances\, in alignment with throat singing’s original form\, take inspiration from the world around them combined with their own thoughts and feelings and an invitation to the audience to help steer the journey songs will take. Creating performances this way allows the audience to experience spontaneous compositions that are unique to each individual show. \nAs PIQSIQ\, they perform improvisational looping live and have incorporated that haunting\, ethereal feel into their debut album Altering the Timeline. The direction for the album sparked during a spontaneous jam session with Ruby Singh next to the Bow River at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in the summer of 2018. As the sisters throat sang\, Ruby beat-boxed and with this first collaboration ideas began to flow. Two short months later the trio found their way back together and converged at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studio. It was here that they began putting together the sounds that would become Altering the Timeline. \nPIQSIQ continues to perform both nationally and internationally. Kayley and Tiffany are excited for the magic to continue as they seek out new collaborations and further develop their entrancing style.

SUMMARY:Mariel Buckley plus Andrina Turenne
DESCRIPTION:” I don’t know if it’s Buckley’s dream to be an essential new voice in Canadian music\, but she is. Everywhere I Used to Be proves it! – CBC\n\n\n\n“There’s a grit to Mariel Buckley’s voice that can’t be manufactured with studio wizardry. She can hit heavenly registers\, but always with a tinge of angst\, like tasting a bit of coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup of velvety coffee\, the mark of handcrafted majesty.” – Edmonton Journal \n \n“…her sophomore slam-dunk…a synth country masterpiece” – No Depression \n” is an improbable palette. But that it all works to such brilliant effectis a testament to Buckley’s particular gift as a songwriter: to reach into the shadowed places between worlds whose edges don’t quite line up\, and find a way to call them home.” – Country Queer \n“Don’t let Mariel Buckley’s twang and the moaning pedal steel that opens “Shooting At The Moon” fool you. This is no laid-back two step ditty. It’s pure fire\, a rock and roller driven by guitars dripping reverb and a freight train rhythm section hell bent on jumping the tracks. Our alt-country-loving neighbors in Canada have known about Buckley since she began gathering laurels after the release of her first record back in 2018. It’s about time we start paying attention down here.” – Blue Ridge Outdoors

SUMMARY:David Myles Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Park Theatre Proudly Presents\n\n\nDavid Myles Trio \nThe Park Theatre \nMonday\, October 24th\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm \nTickets are $20 plus fees in advance. \n \nThe Park welcomes back\, David Myles to our Stage Monday\, October 24th\, 2022 \nlove the people we love—so often keep us awake at the end of the day\, at a loss for answers. From the plaintive opening notes of David Myles’ It’s Only a Little Loneliness\, the New Brunswick-based songwriter testifies that he’s no exception: “I could try to explain what goes on in my brain\, but I’d have to pretend that I knew\,” he sings on “Certain.” On his introspective 15th studio album\, Myles establishes himself as a seeker—of paths\, of new sonic expressions\, of God. Concrete answers\, however\, elude him the same as they elude the rest of us. All of that seeking reveals one clear conclusion\, though: we are bound to each other. “But it’s late at night\, and I’m reaching for the light\,” he continues over soft\, arpeggiated guitar on the album’s opening track. “And I want to spend my whole life with you.” \n“It’s the kind of thing you say to yourself when you’re feeling a bit down: ‘It’s only a little loneliness\,’” Myles says about the album’s title on a drive through northern New Brunswick. “But then at the same time\, you know—it’s actually quite a big thing. It’s overwhelming. You try to tell yourself it’s not a big deal but it feels quite fundamental. And you realize\, ‘I need people. I need a community. I need my friends. I need my family.” \nThat’s clear from songs like the sweet “If I Lost You\,” simultaneously uplifting and heavy as Myles deals with the fact that everything must end\, and what that means for relationships based in love. On the smoky “Mystery\,” he addresses the enigmatic magnetism of opposites attracting\, reminding listeners that those who are different from us broaden our perspectives and make our lives richer. \nSometimes it takes something massive\, though—a rending of the fabric of one’s reality—to see our interdependence on one another clearly enough to inspire profound changes. In 2018\, Myles came down with a sudden illness that had him worried that his life and ability to make music were in jeopardy; in 2020\, the world changed overnight\, upending his life and career along with everyone else. “My worst fear was to have the career drop\,” Myles says. “And then\, for reasons beyond my control\, it dropped for me. And I didn’t die. And it didn’t all fall apart.” \nIt took a lot of soul-searching to get to this point\, where he could look back on the past few years and understand what it had taught him. During this period his bandwidth for putting on any kind of airs was completely depleted\, and he realized that with the time he has\, he has to be 100% himself\, which meant following those thoughts that kept him up at night\, learning how to best express them\, and confronting them through music. “All of a sudden\, I could talk about God in my songs\, and I could talk about the mystery of relationships and love and confusion and loneliness\,” Myles says. \nIn 2021\, the Juno-nominated album That Tall Distance offered an instrumental expression of Myles’ feelings about these questions. It’s Only a Little Loneliness brings his voice and words into the mix\, using the same recording approach\, with each contributing player afforded as much time as they need to lay down their parts at home and complete the picture. The result is a collection that flows naturally\, a whole that proves more than the sum of its dynamic and singular parts. \nFor Myles\, it was imperative that percussion form the beating heart of the record\, and Joshua Van Tassel’s intricate work drives songs like “Walk With Me\,” as Myles seeks to fill \nhis spiritual void. The virtuosic Leith Fleming-Smith appears on organ and Wurlitzer\, and Asa Brosius provides the dreamy title track dobro solo and gossamer pedal steel for the cover of country heartbreak standard “Making Believe.” Elsewhere\, Dean Brouillard provides the crucial low end on bass; Andrew Jackson blows trombone; and Aaron Davis provides the glowing piano work on curtain-closer “Solitaire.” \nAll over the album\, the voices of dear friends—Rose Cousins (“Making Believe”)\, Breagh Isabel (“If I Lost You”)\, and Reeny and Haliey Smith (“Mystery\,” “Walk With Me\,” and the slinky and soulful “You Can’t Hurt Me”)—drive home that important sentiment: we need each other to get through\, even if it’s just a little loneliness. \nOver these past years of isolation\, Myles has continued to seek connection via his “not-so-late night talk show” Myles From Home on YouTube\, which has since become a popular podcast by the same name. Myles From Home has featured a diverse selection of guests including Jeremy Dutcher\, Shad\, Alex Cuba\, Bahamas\, and Ria Mae. The podcast is just another feather in the multifaceted cap of Myles’ career\, which includes numerous awards and accolades\, a robust artist profile stateside\, a 2018 children’s book called Santa Never Brings Me a Banjo\, and the biggest-selling rap single in the history of Canadian music\, “Inner Ninja\,” a cross-genre musical collaboration with rapper Classified.

SUMMARY:The C.R. Avery Orchestra presents Victory on East Hastings
DESCRIPTION:The CR Avery Orchestra presents Victory on East Hasting – Friday\, October 28\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nAfter the ghostly ushers from ancient Galway have lead you to your seat and the time-machine-lights of the legendary West End Cultural Centre have dimmed\, you’ll know that you’re about to witness something special going down. \nFrom the historic WECC lower level to the box-seat balcony\, the audience will be engrossed and electrified by the cut-throat Gregorian sound of an opera organ grinder swelling from the live beat-box orchestra that will lead us all to a Bohemian Central evening of Success’s outskirts-of-society secret recipe. \nVICTORY ON EAST HASTINGS is a feature film that transcends the ordinary ‘night out on the town’\, with C.R. Avery narrating the tale with an orchestra at his finger tips and performing the score live. \nAll bets are off good people\, as cinema is about to have an affair with a rock n’ roll revival show. Boom to the zoom Mo’fo’s\, here comes the ultimate love letter to the neighbourhoods that shape and make us shine\, & how that lives on even once the magic moment is gone.

SUMMARY:The Sadies
DESCRIPTION:Touring in support of their new album\, Colder Streams\, The Sadies return to the Times Change(d) with guests Kacy and Clayton.\n\n\nColder Streams \n \n‘Colder Streams’ is\, by far\, the best record that has ever been made by anyone. Ever. \n \nAs we all know\, the ‘press release’ is a tool meant to announce and promote a new recording project. A jaded and unreliable sales-pitch at best\, the usual ‘bio’ invariably attempts to describe the project in question as some sort of second coming. But how do you sell sounds? The critics’ voice must be heard at all costs\, but this is something else entirely. Obviously\, this is an ad. \n \nKnowing what you’re getting is all anyone really wants to know. The details of how the recording is made might be interesting\, but they aren’t exactly crucial to the listening process. In our case\, comparisons can be misleading too\, because The Sadies don’t really fit tidily into any genre\, or even sub-genre. We aren’t really ‘pre or post’ anything and we don’t have the right hair-cuts or hats for any particular scene. Can’t really call us modern or retro either. We certainly don’t claim to have re-invented the wheel. We just are. And have been for a very long time. So\, all that matters is the music itself\, right? \n \nAfter making so many records\, some things get easier. Most things do not. But just because it’s harder doesn’t mean it isn’t better. I think it’s gotten easier to know when we are on to something and that’s in no small part due to working with Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire/Belle Orchestre) as producer. We put in a lot of hard work but he always made it easy and fun. This is\, of course\, totally irrelevant to your listening experience. \n \nWe began this recording well over a year before the plague began and completed it in June 2021. The studio we worked at in Quebec is perfectly calibrated to our claustrophobia. It was mostly engineered by Pietro Amato (Belle Orchestre/etc.)\, who is great at everything he does when he’s not doing something else. Jon Spencer (Jon Spencer!!!) was kind enough to intervene and rescue a song for us. My folks play on it. There was a church™ involved. Curfews were broken. Borders were crossed stealthily. Sean did all of the artwork. Travis and Mike did a lot of driving. I did the bio. \n \n‘Colder Streams’ is a record made with love by loved ones. The Sadies have released a lot of records. This is one of them. \n \nDo any bands make their best work this far along in their career? I can think of artists who still make great music after all these years\, but their best? Yet\, here we are and that’s what I’m accusing us of. I think it’s our best but I’ve been wrong before. All I ask is that you listen to a few songs and decide for yourself what it sounds like. If you like it\, you’ll know what to do. But my description of the music would just be punishing for the both of us. \n \nI guess all that really needs to be said here is that if you like the Sadies\, you will definitely want to get ‘Colder Streams’. If you disliked or felt indifferent towards The Sadies\, you will definitely want to get ‘Colder Streams’. If you’ve never heard The Sadies and yet you’re still reading\, you too will definitely want to get ‘Colder Streams’. \n \nBut unfortunately\, it’s sold out. \n– Dallas Good \n \n#The Beatles\, #Cher\, #Bob Marley\, #Arcade Fire

SUMMARY:Skye Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Skye Wallace at the West End Cultural Centre – Thursday\, November 3\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nWith her skill in carving melodies and shreddable moments from rock foundations\, songwriter Skye Wallace is an expert at proving herself in every room\, at every turn. Wallace knows the way is paved with second-guessers\, and encounters with unsolicited advisors are plentiful in this world. In truth\, the harshest critic is usually within. \nShaped by an upbringing of constant motion\, with collapse and rebuilding at the core\, Wallace is at home with the idea that change\, especially in oneself\, is a constant. This truism has shaped her new songs\, finished during lockdown but dealing with a time when staying in one place was wishful thinking. For Wallace\, there’s both comfort and conflict in remembering and reconciling the versions of herself formed at the many stops along the way. \nWallace’s breakout single\, about the frustrations of fighting against the glass ceiling\, made a statement by cracking the Canadian alternative radio chart. Early credentials\, including a Globe and Mail “Best 4 Canadian Albums in the World” nod in 2019\, a steady stream of shows with powerhouse rockers like Crown Lands and Matt Mays and a deal with Six Shooter Records\, have Wallace ready for what’s next. \nIn new song “Truth Be Told\,” a searching\, slashing acid-tongued rocker\, Wallace decodes the signals sent from previous selves to make sense of the whole. A hard look gut-check with squalling guitars\, Wallace’s brand of introspection is more disruptive than meditative. From tumult\, comes acceptance\, and with that\, the confidence to answer the question: “Am I enough?”

SUMMARY:Five Alarm Funk w/Freddy and the fire Nation
DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg Folk Fest Presents\n\n\nThursday\, November 3rd \nFive Alarm Funk \n \nHot\, sweaty dance floors with feet stomping and everybody moving. Grooves for days. Monster horns\, crushing percussion and shredding psych-rock guitars.\n \n \nThese are among the elements that make up the Five Alarm Funk experience. The Vancouver-based band is eight strong and over a decade deep into a career that has seen it release five acclaimed albums and burn up stages across the country on six national tours. And this vehicle isn’t about to slow down. In fact\, Five Alarm Funk is just picking up steam. Set to release their 6th studio album\, Sweat\, on March 3\, 2017\, Sweat gets right to the roots of what Five Alarm Funk is all about. Epic\, intense arrangements\, heavy groove and a ton of fun.\n \n \nDon’t be fooled by the name: there’s more to Five Alarm Funk than\, well\, funk. Just ask drummer Tayo Branston\, who says that\, although they are rooted in the style that gives the outfit its name\, he and his bandmates thrive on being able to transcend that genre by seamlessly mixing in elements of Gypsy rock\, Latin music\, ska\, and even prog-metal. “I would say that it’s intense\, passionate\, and fun\, genre-spanning music that really anybody can get onboard with\,” Tayo says. “It’s got such an array of different sounds\, and you can tell that each player has his own individual take and input into each track.”

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Jordan & The Crankie Island Song Project – Sunday\, November 6\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nCATHY JORDAN has been the front-woman with traditional super group Dervish for nearly 30 years\, and has dedicated her life to the nurturing and preservation of traditional music\, and in particular\, traditional songs. During her lifetime she has collected hundreds of these songs which otherwise might lay undiscovered and unsung\, gathering dust in the archives. \nHer latest project – THE CRANKIE ISLAND SONGS – sees her collaborate with visual artist PETER CRANN in order to add yet another dimension to these beautiful gems. Any entwining of Cathy and Peter’s talents guarantees a project worth getting excited about. Cathy\, after all\, is one of Ireland’s most distinguished creative musical forces of any genre or era. And Peter is that ever so rare triple-threat of gentleman\, artist\, and craftsman in one\, with a gift for evocative simplicity.
