SUMMARY:A Collage Concert with Glenn Buhr & The Fallen Angels Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Glenn Buhr and the Fallen Angels Orchestra featuring Duncan Mercredi\, Scott Nolan\, and Victoria Sparks – Saturday\, November 19\, 2022 at 8pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nGlenn Buhr became well known in Canada as co-founder with conductor Bramwell Tovey of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival. Buhr has toured Canada twice as a jazz artist\, and has recently performed his 2nd Piano Concerto with the Esprit Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. His Symphony no. 3 (a choral symphony) was premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in February 2008 with pop singer Sarah Slean as soloist. His full length ballet Beauty and the Beast has toured the UK (five times)\, Hong Kong\, Japan and mainland China for a total of more than 200 performances. \n—– \nDuncan Mercredi is a Cree/Métis poet\, writer and storyteller. A longtime resident of Winnipeg\, he was born in Misipawistik (Grand Rapids) and grew up listening to his grandmother’s stories. His affinity for the wilderness and his sensitivity to the deep cultural prejudices of the broader culture inform his writing. \nHe has published four poetry collections\, including Spirit of the Wolf: Raise Your Voice and The Duke of Windsor: Wolf Sings the Blues. His work has appeared in countless anthologies and periodicals including Prairie Fire and CV2\, including the special joint issue ndncountry\, published in 2018. He has appeared at storytelling and literary festivals across North America and for close to two decades he has been conducting workshops for school children all over Manitoba. \n—– \nScott Nolan is a songwriter\, poet\, multi instrumentalist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba Treaty One Territory. His songs have been recorded by Hayes Carll\, Mary Gauthier\, Watermelon Slim\, and Corin Raymond among others. He has recently produced albums for William Prince\, Lynne Hanson\, and Watermelon Slim. \nIn January 2015 he started writing poetry\, approximately three weeks after his 40th birthday. The plan was to replace smoking cigarettes with walking eight to ten kilometres a day. He is a songwriter by trade and often discovered melodies and rhythms in the shuffling of his feet. He spends most of his time thinking about words\, music\, and language. Nolan found myself writing short poems based on people and places in his neighbourhood\, trying to capture a bit of what was happening around him. \nAn older cousin of his discovered a gift and passion for poetry while serving time in Folsom State Prison. He was an early influence on him\, sending books and letters from prison and encouraging the younger Nolan to read and write as often as possible. This relationship was the subject of a documentary last year called Visiting Day\, produced for the CBC by filmmaker Charles Konowal. He was invited to perform and host writing workshops in the very same prison library his cousin wrote to him from all those years ago. \nThe late Winnipeg poet Patrick O’Connell was also a dear friend and mentor. Patrick is one of his favourite contemporary Canadian poets. His was a lyrical style that had a strong impact on his early songwriting. One of the many benefits of working in the arts community in Winnipeg is the quality of work of his peers. It’s consistently encouraging and inspiring. After more than a decade of relentless touring\, he decided to take a year or so away from the road to collaborate\, produce records\, and enjoy his life in Winnipeg. A play was produced through Manitoba Theatre Projects based on the nine albums he has released since 2003. The play\, I Dream of Diesel\, enjoyed a two week run of sold-out shows and critical praise from both the community and critics \n—– \nActive as a soloist in a variety of chamber music series in Winnipeg\, Victoria Sparks also performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, is principal timpani/percussion for the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra\, and works with many other local arts organizations. She is also the founder and director of the annual Manitoba Band Association’s Prairie Percussion Workshop for aspiring young percussionists. \nSparks has performed as a soloist in a number of chamber music series in Winnipeg (Music ’n’ Mavens\, Millennium Library\, etc)\, performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, is principal Timpani/Percussion with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra\, and works with many local arts organizations\, including the Brandon Chamber Players\, the Groundswell New Music Series\, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Singers. \nIn February 2019\, Sparks performed in the Manitoba Premieres John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit and Terje Isungset’s Beauty of Winter\, at an outdoor venue for the Winnipeg New Music Festival\, accompanied by members of the University of Manitoba Percussion Ensemble. In 2016\, she had the honour of premiering Sid Robinovitch’s Concerto for Percussion and Strings with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. In 2018\, she also performed with the Brandon Chamber Players\, performing duets and trios for percussion and trombone with Graydon Carter and Aaron Wilson. The group performed Libby Larson’s Bronze Veils\, John Mackey’s Harvest Concerto\, and Myles Wright’s Pair Up! In 2015\, for Groundswell\, Sparks performed chamber works by Christos Hatzis and Derek Charke\, on vibraphone and multiple percussion instruments. In 2014\, Sparks performed at Carnegie Hall with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in the Spring for Music Festival\, which included a prominent marimba solo.

SUMMARY:Jesse Roper
DESCRIPTION:A maverick figure with a charismatic\, mischievous\, and famously raucous live show\, Jesse Roper returns with his third album\, Horizons.\n\n\nWith a famously raucous live show\, a diverse history of international touring\, burgeoning streaming numbers\, sync placements in major TV shows\, and an ever-expanding fanbase\, Jesse Roper returns with Horizons\, his third album and first full-length release in over four years. \n In the time between Roper’s last record\, Access to Infinity (2018) and this year’s Horizons\, much has changed. Previously\, Roper’s sound was still searching for a quality that he’d yet to fully realize\, and has since discovered through melding an vast pool of influences unlike ever before; from 70s Motown\, Soul\, acoustic rock\, and Funk-laden Blues. \n Working closely with famed\, Juno-nominated producer\, Gus van Go\, (Metric\, The Stills\, Arkells\, The Trews\, Sam Roberts) on this new collection of songs has pushed Roper into creating some of his best work. \n “Recording with Gus and Werner F was on a whole new level. They really cared where the songs were headed and that they ended up just right”\, Roper shares. “Everything was broken down to the finest details and nothing was allowed to sit at just ‘ok’. It was all about getting the vibe right.” \n And the vibe is certainly right. There’s a depth and a confidence to this new body of work that hasn’t necessarily been at the forefront of Roper’s previous offerings; one that expresses his maturity as both a songwriter and artist. With a richer infusion of vintage R&B and Retro Soul as a background\, Roper’s powerful vocals are have a vibrant skyline to soar over. Like contemporaries Nathaniel Rateliff\, Michael Kiwanuka and Jack White\, Roper tells his story with heart\, and a growl to match; conjuring music a heartfelt story\, without pulling any punches \n Roper’s return is buoyed by an all-star band of drummer Josh Dion (John Scofield\, Paris Monster)\, saxophonist Tony Jarvis (Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings\, Charles Bradley\, Phish)\, and bass by Horizons’ producer\, Gus Van Go himself. Title track\, “Horizons\,” is propelled forward by pulsing percussion\, driving guitar\, and breezy brass\, with Roper’s expansive vocals taking centre stage. The layered production style lends itself to a mysterious\, almost seductive edge to Roper’s soulful refrains; it tantalizes and charms\, hooking the listener in. \n No stranger to big crowds and life on the road\, Roper’s live shows are a tour de force. Backed by the Pretty Good Band\, his magnetic stage presence is renowned across Canada and beyond. A maverick figure\, he’s equal parts charismatic\, mischievous and talented in spades. Roper has opened for Canadian legends\, Colin James\, Burton Cummings\, and many more high-profile artists and contemporaries.\, He’s toured North America with Canadian-American rockers\, Big Wreck\, while cultivating his own teeming audience base. From selling thousands of tickets a show in his home province of BC to selling out shows in far-reaching territories\, Jesse Roper’s steady transformation into a Canadian Rock luminary is clear. Roper has also found new audiences through prudent song placements on a plethora of shows and movies including Riverdale (The CW)\, The Equalizer (CBS)\, ABC’s The \n \n Rookie and more. With tracks racking up millions of streams and six-figure monthly listeners on Spotify alone\, his global fan base is constantly growing. \n For Roper\, this isn’t the end\, or even the middle. This is still the emergence… The first part of a journey with much more to come. Music is a lifelong pursuit for those that embody it so completely and have chosen to continue on its path. \n Look out for Jesse Roper\, a rising star burning brightly upon the horizon. \njesseroper.ca | instagram.com/jesseroperofficial | facebook.com/jesseropermusic

DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg Folk Festival Presents\n\n\nNov 24th\, 2022 \nDoors 7 pm Show 8 pm \nTim Baker is a prolific wild-eyed dreamer. In 2022\, Baker has returned with The Festival\, a sonic embrace\, a call in for love\, and a cry out for connection. Baker wants us to bring our pain and suffering\, and align it all with melody. SUMMARY:Michael Kaeshammer
DESCRIPTION:Michael Kaeshammer at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, November 26\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nMichael Kaeshammer has invested a lot – countless hours at the keyboard\, hundreds of recordings\, thousands of live performances\, millions of miles in the air and on the road – all in pursuit of a mastery of 12 notes across 88 keys. But for the acclaimed Canadian pianist and singer\, there is no set destination\, no achievable end point on his path; it’s all about the journey itself\, and that journey will always be ongoing. \nOver the course of decades as a professional performer\, Kaeshammer has developed a style that weaves threads of classical\, jazz\, blues\, boogie-woogie\, stride\, and even pop into a signature and sought-after sonic tapestry. \n“When I play\, I don’t worry about if it’s jazz or pop or classical or whatever; I just play what I hear and let the music decide what it wants to be\,” begins Kaeshammer. “Sure\, there are different styles\, different eras\, different approaches\, but when you really look at it\, it’s all just music based on 12 notes.” \nBorn and bred in Germany\, Kaeshammer began performing club\, theatre\, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. His first studio album\, Blue Keys\, dropped in 1996 and spurred a consistent sequence of heralded releases and high-profile international performances. Through it all\, the world watched as he grew from child prodigy to full-fledged phenom; from unparalleled pianist to virtuosic songwriter. \n“I do listen to a lot of music\, but I’m not overly influenced by other people; it’s more about trying to learn something new every day\,” muses Kaeshammer about his musical evolution. “I’ll take pretty much any opportunity if it’s going to help me discover new things and help me progress.” \nThose opportunities have been as wide-reaching as the artist’s subsequent breadth of style\, and include: opening slots for the likes of Ray Charles and Anne Murray; stints backing singers like Marva Wright\, the late blues queen of New Orleans; co-writing sessions with rockers Randy Bachman and Colin James; official Olympic Games performances in several world cities; and TV specials on numerous networks – including one set to premiere on PBS in March 2020. \nMany of those experiences have also helped to hone his skills as a vocalist and lyricist to the point that Kaeshammer is equally at home when he takes the mic as he is letting his fingers lead the melody\, as perfectly showcased on his latest LP via True North Records\, 2018’s Something New. \n“I love writing lyrics\,” the artist enthuses. “I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life and feel very grounded as an artist\, a composer\, and a performer\, and the things I’m writing lately are conveying that – how lucky I am and how happy I feel and how grateful that makes me.” \nFans will soon get to enjoy more fruits from that harvest as Kaeshammer prepares for the release of a new live collection in the first half of 2020\, and then a new studio album titled Lucky Man in Spring 2021. \nIt’s a particularly fitting label for this stage in an already-illustrious career; however\, despite all the achievements and accolades – the JUNO Awards\, the shows on iconic stages with international stars and symphony orchestras\, the strings of stellar reviews from major media outlets – Michael Kaeshammer isn’t resting on any laurels; these are merely temporary stops on his journey\, and as always\, he’s solely focused on reaching the next one\, and then the one after that. \n“I’m definitely looking forward to what’s coming up\,” he asserts\, listing off upcoming shows throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, and China in the coming months. “It’s all been so good\, and it’s only getting better. I just can’t wait to keep going\, to keep making and sharing music with the people that enjoy it.” \nIndeed\, his investments thus far have paid off\, and will continue to as he carries on along his path\, eyes anchored on the horizon and always pushing forward.

DESCRIPTION:The Fretless at the West End Cultural Centre – Sunday\, November 27\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n—– \nFour ferocious players\, masterful composition\, and a genre-bending sound—Juno award-winning The Fretless is a Canadian quartet that has firmly taken its place on the map to a progressive form of “trad”. A supergroup of celebrated solo artists\, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be—transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate\, beautiful\, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple and classical construct—two fiddles\, a viola\, and a cello—The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich\, multi-layered\, and uniquely percussive. SUMMARY:At Last! I'm Ready For Christmas! A Stan Rogers Tribute
DESCRIPTION:At Last! I’m Ready For Christmas! A Stan Rogers Tribute – Saturday\, December 3\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear facemasks and show proof of vaccination for all events in the venue. We will continue to evaluate this policy as circumstances evolve. \n-—- \nA child of Maritime stock on both sides of his family\, Stan Rogers was born in Hamilton\, Ont. on November 29\, 1949. He grew to be a big man-six feet four-built like a fire truck\, and possessed of a voice that rumbled from his toes. He could bluff and bellow yet was at heart a poet and intellect who would\, often as not\, sneak away from a gathering to curl up with a book. He made friends and enemies easily\, gaining the former for life and often\, in time\, converting the latter. \nHe became a songwriter too\, working as a rock bassist while still a teenager and later embracing the folk idiom. After a few years as a more-or-less conventional folkie songwriter\, he discovered his real gift. After some persuasion by his Aunt June in Canso Nova Scotia\, he began to write songs about his familial home…his roots. Those early songs found their way on to Stan’s first album\, Fogarty’s Cove\, and he was on his way. From that point forward\, Stan’s best writing was about the Canadian experience. His songs gave a new voice to ordinary folks who worked the fisheries\, mines and farms of this vast country. \nStan was a passionate Canadian partisan\, and much of his short creative life was taken up with song cycles that chronicled the East\, the Plains\, the West and finally the Great Lakes and Ontario. It was a natural progression for a wanderer…to scan a continent and finally return to write of the wonders of home. He was always on the road pursuing his dream of establishing a national identity for Canadian songwriting. It was a dream fulfilled; through his constant soaring\, dynamic performances\, and brilliant songs\, he was known throughout most of the English-speaking folk music world. \nStan died in a fire on Air Canada flight 797 at Cincinnati\, Ohio airport on June 2nd\, 1983. He was returning from a folk festival in Kerrville\, Texas. Memorials and honours were numerous in the months that followed and in May\, 1984 he was posthumously awarded the Diplôme d’Honneur by the Canadian Conference of the Arts. \nHis music continues to amaze\, amuse and inspire people from all walks of life. It has appeared in several poetry anthologies\, been used in films\, plays and musicals\, and has been referred to as “one of the touchstones of modern Canadian history.” \n—– \nSome say he was born into it\, some that he was born with it\, while others claim he has earned it. With one foot planted firmly in folk music’s traditional roots and the other reaching into its dynamic future\, Nathan Rogers isn’t entirely sure what ‘it’ is; singer\, songwriter\, guitarist\, throat-chanter\, percussionist\, revivalist\, or innovator. Whatever it may be\, “Nathan has the ability to turn the folk world on its ears.” \nLike many\, it all started at home but what a unique home it was. Nathan’s first experience picking up the guitar was an attempt to copy the challenging riffs his brother David created after studying with celebrated virtuosos Don Ross and Preston Reed. His sister Beth demanded perfection in all vocals as any self-exacting classical voice teacher would\, while his mother initiated him into the business side of the music industry. His father and uncle informed both his writing style and an ethos of Canadian people that shines in his lyrics. \nWhile others were hiding their braces behind their hands\, Nathan was already up high on stages of all sorts. In winter\, he traveled with and won solo vocal awards as part of the Appleby Boys Choir. Summers were saved for his first love – appearances at folk festivals and the opportunity to meet\, perform with and learn from outstanding musicians. Before he even had an album in hand\, Nathan’s reputed vocal ability had him singing on stage with such notables as JP Cormier\, The Oysterband\, Spirit of the West\, John Cameron\, Connie Caldor and James Keelaghan. \nWith a degree in comparative religion\, an award winning voice and two prized Laskin guitars under his belt\, Nathan founded his own record label\, Halfway Cove Music. In 2005 he finally released his debut album\, True Stories. Produced by Rick Fenton (former AD of Winnipeg Folk Festival)\, distributed by Festival and studded with such outstanding roots musicians as Nikki Mehta\, JP Cormier\, and Murray Pulver\, True Stories was met with critical acclaim both at home and abroad. If multiple encores at every show are any indication\, Canadian audiences coast-to-coast seem to like it too. \nNathan’s performance style leaves the audiences wondering where the rest of the band is hiding. Singing\, chanting\, playing the guitar and stomping\, he fills any stage with “magnificent powerfully clear lyrics and arrangements.” Described as ‘intelligent and witty’\, Nathan will ‘move men and women to tears with his sound and conviction.” \nNathan continues to earn his place in the Canadian folk and blues canon. As Fenton noted\, “I have never seen any musician Nathan’s age who works so hard on his singing and guitar playing.”
