By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nRoots powerhouse duo The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards\, a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies.  Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre\, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate.  \nWith a stage banter striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon\, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear\, rooms shrink\, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs\, living the songs\, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing\, dancing\, crying\, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along.  “We’re folk singers\, we try to write stuff that people can relate to\,” says Edwards\, whose looming stage presence and penetrating eyes find him the yin to Luft’s petite\, snort-laughing yang. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject\, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love\, loss\, and environment\, delivered with soaring\, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo\, guitar and harmonica. However\, a Small Glories performance is really about what happens in-between the songs. “The feedback we get from a lot of audiences is that it’s not just about the music for them\,” Luft says. “It’s the whole package.” \nOn record\, The Small Glories take the musical synergy honed from hundreds of shows together\, and expand it into a new soundscape amplified by pounding drums and other textural embellishments which only reinforce the magic of Luft and Edwards’ innate chemistry — a chemistry labeled the “Lennon-McCartney syndrome\,” by Americana UK\, writing\, “Some things just work together… to witness a performance by The Small Glories is a rare opportunity to experience that indefinable quality that creates perfection.” But don’t just take a European reviewer’s word for it — the band’s debut album\, 2016’s Wondrous Traveler was also praised in Pitchfork by legendary American rock critic Greil Marcus\, who wrote\, “…in moments (The Small Glories) find the darkening chord change the best bluegrass — from the Stanley Brothers to Be Good Tanyas — has always hidden in the sweet slide of the rhythm\, the tiny shift where the person telling the story suddenly understands it.” \nIt’s this yearning for understanding which finds the band often taking more time to introduce a song than it actually takes to play it. Luft\, an original member of harmony sweethearts The Wailin’ Jennys and whose parents were folksingers influenced by the great activist Pete Seeger\, knows that sometimes a song is all you need to bring people together.  But often\, it is more. “(Seeger) was the king of uniting people through singing\,” Luft says. “There’s so much animosity and divisiveness in our world these days… as artists\, part of our job is to somehow create unity.” \nThe Small Glories duplicate and reinforce each others’ many strengths and yet allow their distinct personalities to shine through\, resulting in a live show that is as heartwarming as it is hilarious\, as finger-picking proficient as it is relatable\, and as Canadian as\, well… it’s very Canadian. But that hasn’t stopped them from winning over audiences from Nashville to the Australian outback.  The duo won “Artist of the Year” at the International Folk Awards in New Orleans 2020\, with their highly anticipated sophomore album “Assiniboine & The Red” garnering 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards\, a JUNO Award nomination\, Critics’ Choice for ‘Album of the Year’ in Penguin Eggs Magazine\, and captured the #1 Folk/Roots album spot on the national earshot! radio charts.

Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nMean Old World explores the path of Gordie Tentrees from foster child to foster parent in songs like Rosetta\, Every Child and the title track Mean Old World. Gordie spent time in the social service system before growing up to be a school teacher and youth worker\, then coming back full circle as a foster parent to an indigenous child. Wind Walker is inspired by close friends who found each other while leading reconciliation by example. Gordie’s days as a five-time Golden Glove boxer are recounted in Ring Speed. His gratitude rises in Far Away Friends\, a tribute recognizing all those special off-the-stage hosts who supported him in his 2\,500-plus concerts around the world. Further experiences in foreign countries pursuing record deals roll tongue-in-cheek throughout Danke. The learning gained from supporting a childhood friend through the last stages of cancer is presented in Train is Gone. Two best friends who break the mold once a year by adventuring together\, leaving their domestic partners to muddle through\, are featured in Lefties. Twice as Nice lets us know that the grass is never greener. \nThis recording is best listened to as a whole project. Each song is a treasure\, beautifully sung\, great instrumentation\, wonderful production\, fantastic lyrics\, yet fitting together as a whole. Gordie has always had muscle and confidence in his music\, but this project represents increased nuance and depth. The works reveal wit and poignancy. The work inspires the hero in us; it inspires courage\, boldness\, honour\, strength\, and confidence. Gordie reminds us that there are hardships but change is possible. He is helped by a score of artistic collaborators including members of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers\, an internationally renowned Inland Tlingit performance group based out of Whitehorse\, Yukon. \nMean Old World explores humour\, truth\, reconciliation\, abandonment\, glory\, love\, affection\, danger\, safety\, fighting\, fleeing\, winning and losing. The call to action is to get up\, get your toque on\, pursue a red feather kiss\, but don’t forget about the compost and recycling.

By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nAs one half of one of Blue Rodeo’s songwriting partnership\, Jim Cuddy has one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music thanks to omnipresent hits such as “Try\,” “5 Days In May\,” and “Bad Timing.” As a group Blue Rodeo has sold over 5 million records world-wide\, won countless JUNO Awards\, been inducted in to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame\, received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and Jim (along with songwriting partner Greg Keelor) was invested as Officers of the Order of Canada. \nIn 1998\, in between Blue Rodeo projects\, Jim released his first solo album All In Time and hit the road with the eponymous Jim Cuddy Band featuring Colin Cripps (guitar)\, Anne Lindsay (fiddle)\, Joel Anderson (drums)\, Bazil Donovan (bass) and Steve O’Connor (keyboards). Since that first release the Jim has recorded three more solo albums; The Light That Guides You Home (2006)\, Skyscraper Soul (2011)\, Constellation (2018). Jim’s latest release\, Countrywide Soul\, is a celebration of sorts – a celebration of music and the musicians who join him on stage each night. \nAfter an extensive tour in support of their album\, Constellation\, The Jim Cuddy Band reconvened at Jim’s family farm in Southern Ontario. Inspired by the band’s live show\, Jim wanted to capture this energy on record and showcase each member’s skill\, allowing them to stretch out and shine. Produced by Tim Vesely\, Jim Cuddy and Colin Cripps\, Countrywide Soul was recorded live on the top floor of Jim’s barn and kept as natural as possible to retain the woody sound of the barn board room and the energy that only comes from playing together live. \n“When we go into the studio to make records\, the songs are born out of my imagination and the band contribute their incredible talents to make those ideas come to life. The songs evolve and become part of our collective imagination\,” explains Jim. “But it is on tour that they really take flight. We are connected by art. We are connected by what we create together. That’s what I wanted to capture on this record. How much I enjoy listening to the band reveal their imagination and add their creativity to the songs was really the inspiration. How vital that is to me. So as much as this is a musicians’ record\, it’s really an example – if you’re lucky – of what bands can create together.” \nTo achieve his goal on Countrywide Soul\, Jim re-worked a number of songs previously recorded for his solo career and with Blue Rodeo. To round out the record\, he wrote two new songs and included a couple of favourite cover songs. \n“When choosing songs for the album\, I tried to find those in which I could change the mood and tone as in ‘All In Time’ or songs that had been underdeveloped on previous records such as ‘Clearer View’\,” says Jim. “’Almost Persuaded’ was a song Blue Rodeo performed in the early days. It was a favourite of an old friend of ours\, so I recorded this in her honour.”
