SUMMARY:Gordie Tentrees with Bob Hamilton & Jaxon Haldane
DESCRIPTION:Gordie Tentrees with Bob Hamilton & Jaxon Haldane at the West End Cultural Centre – Wednesday\, January 11\, 2023\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nMean Old World explores the path of Gordie Tentrees from foster child to foster parent in songs like Rosetta\, Every Child and the title track Mean Old World. Gordie spent time in the social service system before growing up to be a school teacher and youth worker\, then coming back full circle as a foster parent to an indigenous child. Wind Walker is inspired by close friends who found each other while leading reconciliation by example. Gordie’s days as a five-time Golden Glove boxer are recounted in Ring Speed. His gratitude rises in Far Away Friends\, a tribute recognizing all those special off-the-stage hosts who supported him in his 2\,500-plus concerts around the world. Further experiences in foreign countries pursuing record deals roll tongue-in-cheek throughout Danke. The learning gained from supporting a childhood friend through the last stages of cancer is presented in Train is Gone. Two best friends who break the mold once a year by adventuring together\, leaving their domestic partners to muddle through\, are featured in Lefties. Twice as Nice lets us know that the grass is never greener. \nThis recording is best listened to as a whole project. Each song is a treasure\, beautifully sung\, great instrumentation\, wonderful production\, fantastic lyrics\, yet fitting together as a whole. Gordie has always had muscle and confidence in his music\, but this project represents increased nuance and depth. The works reveal wit and poignancy. The work inspires the hero in us; it inspires courage\, boldness\, honour\, strength\, and confidence. Gordie reminds us that there are hardships but change is possible. He is helped by a score of artistic collaborators including members of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers\, an internationally renowned Inland Tlingit performance group based out of Whitehorse\, Yukon. \nMean Old World explores humour\, truth\, reconciliation\, abandonment\, glory\, love\, affection\, danger\, safety\, fighting\, fleeing\, winning and losing. The call to action is to get up\, get your toque on\, pursue a red feather kiss\, but don’t forget about the compost and recycling.

SUMMARY:Corin Raymond
DESCRIPTION:Our dear friend Corin Raymond returns to the Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club in celebration of our 22nd Anniversary.\n\n\nToronto songwriter Corin Raymond is a troubadour whose robust veracity appeals to older folks and children alike. Raymond’s songs are covered by Dustin Bentall\, The Good Lovelies\, The Strumbellas\, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer\, and a far flung community of roots musicians and enthusiasts. Raymond’s latest JUNO nominated album\, Hobo Jungle Fever Dreams (released March 3rd\, 2016) is “a hypnotic\, literate collection of dark tall tales…. Romantic\, immediate\, and narcotic.” (Acoustic Guitar). Aside from the hilarious triumph of funding his previous project\, double-album Paper Nickels\, with Canadian Tire money\, Raymond enjoys a second career performing his non-musical\, one-man shows Bookworm (2011) and The Great Canadian Tire Money Caper (2014)\, which he has toured extensively to over a dozen Fringe and literary festivals\, and to theatres in three countries. “Raymond has impeccable timing\, and his performance is at once intimate\, openhearted\, and evangelical.” (The Georgia Straight on Bookworm) “Corin Raymond is a storyteller who by the end of the night you’ll have known your whole life.” (The Globe and Mail).

SUMMARY:Jim Cuddy with special guest Sam Polley
DESCRIPTION:Jim Cuddy with special guest Sam Polley – Thursday\, January 12\, 2023 at 8:00pm at the West End Cultural Centre\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nAs one half of one of Blue Rodeo’s songwriting partnership\, Jim Cuddy has one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music thanks to omnipresent hits such as “Try\,” “5 Days In May\,” and “Bad Timing.” As a group Blue Rodeo has sold over 5 million records world-wide\, won countless JUNO Awards\, been inducted in to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame\, received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and Jim (along with songwriting partner Greg Keelor) was invested as Officers of the Order of Canada. \nIn 1998\, in between Blue Rodeo projects\, Jim released his first solo album All In Time and hit the road with the eponymous Jim Cuddy Band featuring Colin Cripps (guitar)\, Anne Lindsay (fiddle)\, Joel Anderson (drums)\, Bazil Donovan (bass) and Steve O’Connor (keyboards). Since that first release the Jim has recorded three more solo albums; The Light That Guides You Home (2006)\, Skyscraper Soul (2011)\, Constellation (2018). Jim’s latest release\, Countrywide Soul\, is a celebration of sorts – a celebration of music and the musicians who join him on stage each night. \nAfter an extensive tour in support of their album\, Constellation\, The Jim Cuddy Band reconvened at Jim’s family farm in Southern Ontario. Inspired by the band’s live show\, Jim wanted to capture this energy on record and showcase each member’s skill\, allowing them to stretch out and shine. Produced by Tim Vesely\, Jim Cuddy and Colin Cripps\, Countrywide Soul was recorded live on the top floor of Jim’s barn and kept as natural as possible to retain the woody sound of the barn board room and the energy that only comes from playing together live. \n“When we go into the studio to make records\, the songs are born out of my imagination and the band contribute their incredible talents to make those ideas come to life. The songs evolve and become part of our collective imagination\,” explains Jim. “But it is on tour that they really take flight. We are connected by art. We are connected by what we create together. That’s what I wanted to capture on this record. How much I enjoy listening to the band reveal their imagination and add their creativity to the songs was really the inspiration. How vital that is to me. So as much as this is a musicians’ record\, it’s really an example – if you’re lucky – of what bands can create together.” \nTo achieve his goal on Countrywide Soul\, Jim re-worked a number of songs previously recorded for his solo career and with Blue Rodeo. To round out the record\, he wrote two new songs and included a couple of favourite cover songs. \n“When choosing songs for the album\, I tried to find those in which I could change the mood and tone as in ‘All In Time’ or songs that had been underdeveloped on previous records such as ‘Clearer View’\,” says Jim. “’Almost Persuaded’ was a song Blue Rodeo performed in the early days. It was a favourite of an old friend of ours\, so I recorded this in her honour.”

SUMMARY:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 - Pierre Kwenders with Dr. Henry
DESCRIPTION:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 – Pierre Kwenders with Dr. Henry at the West End Cultural Centre – Wednesday\, January 25\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nCongolese-born\, Montreal-based musician\, songwriter\, and DJ Pierre Kwenders (he/him) is a storyteller at his core. Motivated by the intricacies of love\, his songs weave together narratives from memories of the past\, sketches of his hometown\, and reflections on the future. With his third album\, José Louis and the Paradox of Love (via Arts & Crafts)\, for which he was awarded the prestigious Polaris Music Prize\, Kwenders arrives at a new juncture – a moment of resonance\, carefully wrapped in freewheeling tapestry\, hinged in reverence to its diverse heritage\, yet revelling in the inventive combination of its elements. \nBorn in Kinshasa\, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Kwenders borrows his stage name from his late grandfather\, a widely respected businessman and community figure. Following his mother’s footsteps\, in 2001 Kwenders immigrated from Congo to Montreal. While his music-filled childhood quickly earned him a reputation as the most energetic dancer at family gatherings\, it was when he joined a youth choir in 2008 that Kwenders would have his first formative musical experience. Collecting taxes by day and singing in church by night\, this spiritually fitting experience brought a young Kwenders clarity on the role that music would come to play in his life. Inspired by “sagacité\,” a way of life coined by Ivorian singer Douk Saga\, which means to work hard in order to play hard\, a decade later he’s established himself as an architect of modern African music\, creating a unique blend of Afro-inflected electronic sounds inspired by Congolese rumba\, propagated by the Moonshine collective\, a post-border multidisciplinary artist collective celebrating diversity in dance culture since Kwenders co-founded it in 2014. \nSinging and rapping in Lingala\, French\, English\, Tshiluba\, and Kikongo\, Kwenders similarly weaves his stories across the boundaries of language and geography. José Louis and the Paradox of Love is a culmination of personal growth and the musical dexterity he has honed over the years\, converging his strong songwriting capabilities with the bravado he possesses as a DJ. The album explores an ongoing search to grasp the universal complexities of romance\, sometimes through the lens of Kwenders’ own intimate experiences. The songs were written and recorded over the span of four years\, and the album is symbolically titled after his birth name\, José Louis Modabi. Through different moments of tension and release\, romantic narratives of beauty and disaster are packed into powerful poetic musical vignettes. \nJosé Louis and The Paradox of Love transcends genres including electronic\, pop\, and rumba and includes instruments such as the guitar\, saxophone\, cello\, trumpet\, violin\, and the Mbira\, a plucked idiophone from Zimbabwe. Just as Kwenders writes from a multilingual perspective\, so too does he draw on his musical influences\, searching for the precise nuances offered by each one to best emotionally resonate. Dipping into a wide range of cultures\, the album was written and recorded in a handful of cities across borders including Montreal\, Lisbon\, Seattle\, New York City\, Philadelphia\, and New Orleans\, and includes a wide range of features with both new and old collaborators. \nIn addition to be a leading force of Moonshine\, Kwenders has a handful of critically-acclaimed releases under his belt. In the fall of 2020\, he released Classe Tendresse\, a collaborative EP created with French producer Clément Bazin that explores themes of longing and homesickness towards one’s homeland. The project won Kwenders a nomination for the 2021 GAMIQ World EP/Album of the Year award\, and follows the release of MAKANDA at The End of Space\, the Beginning of Time\, Kwenders’s 2017 sophomore album\, and Le Dernier Empereur Bantou\, his debut album unveiled in 2014 – both earning him nominations for the Polaris Music Prize. In 2019\, Kwenders joined forces with Ngabonziza Kiroko to form the future soul duo ABAKOS. Their debut album Solar Soldier was released in 2019\, which featured production from prolific British electronic musician Jamie Lidell. He also engages in collaborative musical projects\, including Baluka\, an EP released in August 2021 with Uproot Andy\, a Brooklyn-based producer and Que Bajo party co-founder. Expanding on his success as a musical artist\, he co-directed a series of short documentaries titled “Zaïre Space Program”\, which captures life in his hometown of Kinshasa. \n-—- \nDr. Henry \nPortage and Mainers are reknowned for treating their seasonal affective disorder by staying inside to rock and roll when it’s 40 below but here’s a new remedy: a house call from Dr. Henry\, ready to treat your SAD with an exciting hit of groovy\, hip-shaking\, Afro-fusion jazz! Dr. Henry band’s three core musicians met in Winnipeg after moving from Nigeria for higher education pursuits. Their cool sound is shaped by their West African roots as well as familial influences\, musical inspirations and collaborations with fellow Winnipeggers. In their vibrant and colourful musical mosaic\, you can hear Afro-beat inspired by its master\, Fela Kuti\, as well as neo-soul and polyrhythmic jazz. It’s delightfully infectious and an instant cure-all. Call the Dr. Henry band for whatever ails you.

SUMMARY:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 - Grippin' Sage
DESCRIPTION:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 – Grippin’ Sage with Boogey The Beat / MattMac / The Kaptain / Toppleganger – Saturday\, January 28\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nBoogey The Beat \nFor years Anishinaabe DJ and producer Les Boulanger — known by audiences as Boogey the Beat — has toiled behind the scenes\, laying the sonic foundations for other musicians’ anthems. As a longtime lover of hip-hop and rap\, collaboration is his comfort zone. He’s worked with the likes of The Halluci Nation (formerly a Tribe Called Red) and Snotty Nose Rez Kids\, playing stages across Turtle Island. \nIn homage to the sounds of a sundance\, Boogey builds each song around a percussive heartbeat\, then adds vocals and other instruments\, letting the drum lead the way. He remembers walking up to one of his first childhood pow wows and hearing the big drum\, a guiding force that stays with him today. \nWhile he hopes his music will resonate with revellers from all walks of life\, he beams at the thought of Indigenous youth hearing pow wow and sundance songs for the first time at one of his shows. \n“It’s important to not forget that at one time it was illegal for us to sing these songs\, play these drums\, and go to these ceremonies\,” he says. “Now it’s a time for celebration\, and for us to take over the main stage.” \n-—- \nMattMac \nOriginally from Garden Hill First Nation\, born blind\, and growing up surrounded by music\, Mattmac quickly found it to be an effective coping mechanism and took to singing in his community’s gospel choir. From there\, he started making beats and writing songs\, teaching himself how to play piano and guitar along the way. He attributes his competencies to the support of the Bling & Famous group — a USA-based collective of blind music artists who collaborate and connect with one another through the internet. \nMattmac debuted his entry to the music scene in 2016 when N’we Jinan\, a traveling music studio program\, visited his community and invited him to collaborate on a project. Pulling inspiration from his personal story\, they created a song and video titled “Help You See” that has received over 250\,000 views on YouTube and Facebook. From there\, Mattmac has connected with International artist Nelly Furtado and performed alongside her at Indigenous day Live and We Day Canada Day in 2017; they continue to work together. \nIn 2020\, his debut music project\, “20/20” catapulted Mattmac’s music and story into the national limelight\, landing him on CTV National News and all major media outlets. His debut single\, “Paradise”\, reached #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown and top 50 on the mediabase charts. In 2021\, he won the Broadcast Dialogue Emerging Artist Radio Award and took home the Rap/Electronic Album Of The Year at the Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards. \nMattmac hopes to continue to use his platform to inspire others to know that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. \n-—- \nToppleganger \n“Music has always been my go to”—Toppleganger emerged from a darker time in life; while transitioning from playing metal to learning how to produce music\, and never really sticking to one genre when it came to production. Be prepared to be taken on a wild adventure.

SUMMARY:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 - Joe & The Shitboys with Sgt. Papers
DESCRIPTION:WINTERRUPTION WPG 2023 – Joe & The Shitboys with Sgt. Papers – Sunday\, Janury 29\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nJoe & The Shitboys \nThe bisexual vegans Joe & The Shitboys punch with brief and catchy shitpunk songs (they barely reach the one minute-mark). The band was formed with the intention of calling out shitty behavior in the conservative Faroe Islands where they are from. The rock scene is filled with boneless homophobes and misogynists\, says the band. So\, the band chose to call everybody out by making fast punk songs and singing in their faces \nTheir shows are full of energy with a barrage of songs such as “Drugs R’4 Kidz”\, “Life Is Great You Suck” and “If You Believe in Eating Meat\, Start With Your Dog”\, being broken up by the flamboyant frontman\, Joe\, roasting the audience. \nAfter a flurry of hometown shows\, including at the Faroese Music Awards where they won Best Group in 2020\, the band looks out into the world. \n-—- \nSgt. Papers \nSgt. Papers is a duo formed in 2017 by Ivan and Felipe García\, two brothers from the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. That year they put out their first record making noise in the Mexican rock scene and USA\, starting to play festivals in those two countries. Lots of touring and 3 Albums after\, in 2022 Sgt. Papers is one of the most notorious bands from the new Mexican Scene\, embracing a new fresh wave of rock bands\, were both members also get involved in other projects\, as producers\, promoters and musicians. Always supporting collaborations and DIY culture. \nIn May 2021 the band releases their first single of their last album\, under the american/Mexican label Devil In The Woods\, all the music is produced and recorded by the band. After the pandemic\, Sgt. Papers started to tour and be active again all over Mexico\, and also getting booked by festivals in Mexico and The US\, such as Festival Marvin\, Tecate Sonoro\, Ruido Fest in Chicago\, HOCO Fest in Tucson AZ\, Freakout Festival in Seattle and upcoming tours in Mexico\, and in the US southwest\, west-coast and East Coast. The duo has gotten reviews for their energetic and fast live show\, with mosh pits\, sweat and loud music as their signature.

DESCRIPTION:“The Future is Unwritten.”\n\n\nUMFM 101.5 Presents:\n \nA Tribute to Joe Strummer & the Clash\n \nFeat.\n \nThe Guns of Wolseley\n \nThe Crackdown\n \nEl Mariachi Ghost\n \nDeath Cassette\n \nFriday\, February 3rd\n \nThe Park Theatre\n \nDoors @ 7pm\n \nShow @ 8pm\n \nTickets are $15 in advance from www.ticketweb.ca\n \n \n“The Future is Unwritten”\n \nIn resurrecting a Peg City classic\, UMFM101.5 & The Park Theatre are bringing the words \, energy and music of Joe Strummer & the Clash back to the local stage.\n \nThis will be a celebration surrounding February 7th’s International Clash Day\, for which we’ve got one hell of a cast slotted to play.\n \nTHE GUNS OF WOLSELEY feature an all-star cast of many Clash tribute gigs past. Members of SubCity\, The Vibrating Beds\, Kids on Fire\, the Noble Thiefs\, Greg Rekus & the Inside Job and many more come together with an exclusive Clash/Mescaleros set.\n \nReuniting out of the ashes of a punk rock scene past\, THE CRACKDOWN\, bring a veteran snarl that has been integral to these tribute gigs since day one. Don’t miss this chance to experience them blaze their way through both Clash repertoire and their own anthemic sing-alongs.\n \nMaking their debut at this tribute is the incredibly eclectic EL MARIACHI GHOST – who live and breathe both the Clash’s work ethic and amalgamation of influences as “their show leaps from anguish and longing to a raging fury in a heartbeat.”\n \nRounding out the bill are the tour de force that is DEATH CASSETTE. Arguably the most pertinent punk rock band our city has seen in years\, each time this group hits the stage they’re met with a wave of ear shattering awe.

SUMMARY:Luca Fogale
DESCRIPTION:Luca Fogale at the West End Cultural Centre – Monday\, February 13\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \n“Amongst all these villains\, I will be your friend\,” Luca Fogale sang on his 2016 single “Villains\,” and all these years later\, he’s stayed true to that mission. It’s fitting that the debut album where that song originated was called Safety\, because that’s always been Luca’s mission in music: to provide comfort and sanctuary\, not just from the cruel world that can so often bring us down\, but from the dark thoughts and messy feelings that can plague us in our most insecure moments. Raised on a steady diet of Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell\, the singer/songwriter from Burnaby\, British Columbia possesses a voice that seems soft and gentle on the surface\, but cuts deep to reveal hidden truths and suppressed emotions. “I grew up in not the most expressive family\,” Luca reflects\, “and we were conservative both in the way that we interacted with each other and the way we all bottled things up.” He’s spent his musical career making up for lost time\, creating songs that aren’t afraid to be tender\, vulnerable\, and brutally honest. \nWith Safety\, we were introduced to a songwriter with a fine-tuned ear for warm\, wool-sweater melodies\, richly rendered narratives\, and intimate autumnal ambiance\, like Jeff Buckley timewarped into Bon Iver’s wood cabin. That album—and its gospel-gilded 2017 follow-up single “I Don’t Want to Lose You”—pegged Luca as an indie-folk phenom on the rise\, with streaming stats well into the seven figures. But his 2020 follow-up\, Nothing Is Lost\, revealed there was a whole lot more to Luca than prettily played serenades on acoustic guitar and piano. Through a broader palette of synth-washed atmospheres\, orchestral flourishes\, and lush ‘70s soft-rock arrangements\, the album sees Luca graduate from the proverbial coffeehouse to the concert hall\, recasting his private conversations as cinematic set pieces. \nHowever\, his musical vision expands\, Luca’s songwriting keeps drilling down into the deepest corners of his soul\, as he reckons with crises both spiritual and existential in search of inner peace and redempetion. But “Something I’ve really struggled with my entire life is feeling worthy and purposeful and that my life has value\,” Luca admits. “A lot of these songs are meditations and reminders to myself of how I want to live my life: the ways in which I want to think about myself and think about the people in my life\, and how I want to be seen. I’m still learning about what sort of music I want to make and what kind of artist I want to be. Obviously\, it’s a lifelong process.”
