SUMMARY:Barbra Lica
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Lica at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, March 4\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre will continue to require that patrons wear a facemask in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nJUNO-nominated artist Barbra Lica is fast rising Canadian vocalist and songwriter and has been receiving accolades for a unique approach that stresses subtlety\, grace and storytelling. Based in Toronto\, Barbra’s live show captivates audiences all over North America with her genuine warmth and confident stage presence. A seasoned act on the Canadian and American club and festival circuits\, Barbra Lica has performed everywhere from New York City’s legendary Birdland to Toronto’s prestigious Koerner Hall. She has also headlined at festivals across the continent including Festival International de Jazz de Montréal\, Vancouver International Jazz Festival and Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival\, and opened for the likes of Christian McBride\, Pat Metheny\, Bob Dorough\, and Terence Blanchard. \nBarbra’s debut album That’s What I Do (Triplet / Universal Jazz Japan) was released to widespread acclaim in 2012\, ranking her in Canada’s Top 5 Jazz singers on the CBC\, as well Top 5 up-and-coming Toronto jazz artists on blogTO. Her band made their Japanese debut live at the Tokyo International Jazz Festival in 2015 for over 1000 audience members. Her first album with Justin Time Records\, I’m Still Learning\, was released September 2016 and subsequently nominated for a 2017 JUNO Award in the category of “Best Vocal Jazz Album”. Barbra is currently promoting her newest project entitled\, You’re Fine (Justin Time Records). This album is a collaborative effort between Toronto and Nashvillebased musicians\, seamlessly blending jazz\, country and folk influences. It includes Barbra’s touring band of up-and-coming musicians from across Canada with special guests and country music legends\, Paul Franklin (Vince Gill\, Shania Twain\, Toby Keith) on pedal steel guitar and mutli-instrumentalist Wanda Vick Burchfield (Taylor Swift\, Trisha Yearwood\, Jason Aldean). “You’re Fine” was recorded at Addiction Sound Studios in the heart of Nashville with award-winning Canadian engineer David Kalmusky (John Oates\, Journey) and highly-respected Canadian producer/bassist Marc Rogers (The Philosopher Kings\, Nikki Yanofsky). This is Barbra’s most ambitious and personal offering to date – it promises to break all the rules while searching for commonalities between musical genres\, human experiences and two sides of one border.

SUMMARY:Ali Hassan - Does This Taste Funny?
DESCRIPTION:Ali Hassan: Does This Taste Funny? – Wednesday\, November 2\, 2022 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nAli Hassan is a Stand-up Comic and Actor who has performed for audiences across Canada and internationally. \n Ali is the host of the CBC Radio stand-up comedy show Laugh Out Loud. Ali is also heard on CBC Radio\, NPR and PRX as a frequent guest-host of As It Happens\, the arts and culture show ‘q’\, and for the past six consecutive years\, he has hosted Canada Reads – the annual battle of the books celebrating the best of Canadian literature. \n Ali has appeared on the big screen in award-winning films – Breakaway\, French Immersion\, and as the memorable Lebanese ‘Uncle Stevie’ opposite Sean William Scott\, Jay Baruchel\, and Eugene Levy in the hockey hit Goon. In 2020\, Ali was in the films MySpy\, Mafia Inc\, and Tammy’s Always Dying which had its World Premiere at TIFF 2019. His recent television roles have included Blood & Treasure (CBS)\, Designated Survivor (ABC)\, Cardinal (CTV)\, Odd Squad (PBS Kids)\, Man Seeking Woman (FXX)\, Murdoch Mysteries (CBC) and Working Moms (CBC\, Netflix). Television audiences can also see Ali as a recurring guest star on the new CBC sitcom\, Run The Burbs. \n Ali has performed at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal and Toronto’s JFL42. Ali also toured across Canada as one of the stars of Just For Laughs Comedy Night In Canada tour\, hosted By Rick Mercer. \n A Canadian Comedy Award nominee\, Ali has toured his solo show Muslim Interrupted around Canada to great acclaim. He also took the show to Scotland to perform at the world’s largest comedy festival\, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2022\, Ali begins touring his latest one man show\, based on his decade in the food industry\, Does This Taste Funny? In 2022\, make sure to check out his book\, ‘Is There Bacon in Heaven?’ that comes out with Simon & Schuster. \nAbout ‘Does This Taste Funny’ \nAli Hassan’s career plans started off as simply as anyone’s: become a chef\, get a food show on television\, get a second food show on television\, be the face of the network and have oven mitts with his face on them. But sometimes things get in the way of your dreams: like your parents’ disappointment\, your family of four children and your successful comedy career. \n This show is a hilarious exposition of Ali’s journey in and out of the culinary world in which he spent 12 years. Think Eat\, Pray\, Love….minus the Prayer

SUMMARY:St. Patrick's Day with The Dust Rhinos
DESCRIPTION:St. Patrick’s Day with The Dust Rhinos – Friday\, March 17\, 2023 at the West End Cultural Centre\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nFrom basement pubs to festival stages the Dust Rhinos have been bringing their particular brand of punk flavoured Irish trad to venues large\, small\, and otherwise since 1992. Blossoming from a trio of buskers to a 5-piece Celtic rock juggernaut\, the Rhinos have tread the boards with acts as varied as The Dropkick Murphys\, Gaelic Storm\, Alabama\, Leahy\, the Barra MacNeils\, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Whether a house concert\, pub night\, or festival (Dauphin Countryfest\, Festival du Voyageur\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, the Grey Cup Festival and counting!) the Rhinos’ controlled chaos will get people out of their seats\, on the dance floor\, and clamouring for One! More! Song! \nWith influences that include the Pogues\, the Oysterband\, Spirit of the West\, the Clash\, and Peter Gabriel\, it’s no wonder the Rhinos have a powerful\, yet multi-faceted and layered sound and playing style. An aggressive\, but subtle sonic assault. Ever seen a ceilidh break out in a mosh pit? Or vice versa? Expect it at a Rhinos show. As their loyal and ever-growing fan base can attest\, when the Dust Rhinos are on stage\, the only thing that won’t take you by surprise is how much fun you’re having.

SUMMARY:TRIO SR9
DESCRIPTION:The WECC & CCFM presents TRIO SR9 from Lyon\, France – Thursday\, March 23\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nAfter a first collaboration around Gabriel Fauré\, the Trio SR9 and Kyrie Kristmanson extend their beautiful meeting in a common adventure. \nThey have jointly imagined a program that crosses and intertwines their singular musical worlds. \nTogether\, they wish to put forward a repertoire essentially made up of women’s works\, a repertoire that crosses eras through original arrangements. \nA program of baroque\, classical and romantic melodies\, but also music of today\, carried by the voice of Kyrie Kristmanson and the various percussions of the Trio SR9\, marimba\, vibraphone\, crotales and a prepared piano. \nThis concert\, articulated in 3 parts\, is an ode to women composers\, sometimes left in the shadow of their contemporaries.TRIO SR9 \n—– \nTRIO SR9 \nFor ten years now\, the Trio SR9\, formed in Lyon by Paul Changarnier\, Nicolas Cousin and Alexandre Esperet\, has been sharing its passion with audiences around the world. First Prize winner of the Luxembourg International Trio Competition in 2012\, Trio SR9 has since established itself in the musical landscape with undeniable recognition. \nThe ensemble reinterprets works from the musical heritage with all percussion instruments\, creates new works with composers and collaborates with artists from all artistic backgrounds. \nThey are currently preparing their 5th album “Venus Rising” with singer Kyrie Kristmanson. \nIn 2023\, they are invited by Issey Miyake to play for the Fall-Winter 2023-2024 Fashion Week in Paris. \nHe performs his repertoire in France (Théâtre du Châtelet – Paris\, Opéra de Lyon\, Folle Journée de Nantes…)\, internationally (USA\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Germany\, Netherlands\, Belgium…) and regularly gives master-classes in conservatories and universities. \nThe Trio SR9 is an ensemble subsidised by the Ministry of Culture. It is an associate artist of the TTA in Saint Priest and is sponsored by Adams\, Zildjian\, Resta-Jay Percussions and Bergerault. He is represented by Art/scène Diffusion\, Blue bird Booking and the production company Horizon musiques. \n—– \nKYRIE KRISTMANSON \nKyrie Kristmanson develops a kaleidoscopic universe\, a musical emanation of pop\, electro\, medieval sounds… a singular mix of very old energies with an enchanting look on the present. \nHer first album\, Origin of Stars\, explores the vibrations of the past in the Canadian North where she grew up. \nComposed in Canada\, it was released worldwide by NØ FØRMAT!/Universal France in 2010. The tour that followed took her to Europe and the South of France where\, intrigued by \nthe history of stones\, she visited the ruins of medieval castles. These medieval vestiges\, ancient residences of an Occitan nobility\, will incite her to retrace the incomplete repertoire of the first female composers: the trobairitz. \nAfter having completed a thesis on them at the Sorbonne\, it is by taking the liberty of appropriating these profane love poems that she composes a second opus: Modern Ruin. Arranged for string quartet and voice by Clément Ducol and co-directed by Maxime le Guil this fantastic extrapolation of these lost songs was released by Naïve in February 2015. \nToday\, fascinated by the discoveries of quantum physics\, Kyrie wonders about the hypothesis of a musical tradition coming from a parallel world… The result of this questioning is a kind of folk-cosmic that would seem to have traveled light years through stellar skies. Recorded in an abandoned wing of the Château de Versailles and produced by Saint Michel\, the tour for this new album Lady Lightly takes place in 2021.

SUMMARY:Songs of Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Songs of Solidarity – A Fundraising Concert in Support of Emma Cloney – Wednesday\, March 29\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nLocal musician and nurse Emma Cloney was diagnosed with a painful and disabling genetic condition called Lipedema in 2021. Her condition worsened so aggressively that she has to step away from her touring with The New Customs\, and go on disability leave from her nursing work. Lipedema left Emma unable to walk or stand without pain and her life as she knew it was slipping away. \nWhile there is no cure for lipedema there is surgery that can help removed diseased tissue to reduce pain and restore mobility. This specialized surgery is not available in Canada. Emma requires 7 surgeries to restore wellness and fully return her to her life as a musician\, nurse\, mother\, partner and friend. In January 2022 Manitoba health approved Emma’s full course of treatment and sent her to the USA for 3 of her 7 surgeries. Suddenly without valid reason Manitoba Health changed their minds about providing Emma with life changing medically necessary surgeries. Manitoba Health now refuses to cover the costs of Emma’s surgery and instead the province invites her to “fund the treatment yourself”. \nEach surgery comes at the unimaginable expense of $18\,000 per treatment. Simply an impossible burden for Emma and her family as she is now living on disability due to her illness. \nThe legal process to fight this unjust decision from Manitoba Health has been lengthy and delayed several times in the meantime Emma must continue her treatments to manage her aggressive condition or risk permanent disability. \nWhen government fails community prevails and so the musical community in Winnipeg and the WECC have stepped up to support Emma to help her fund her surgery. \n Since 2011\, Emma Cloney has brought us the “Prairie Kitchen Party” and countless performances with her duo The New Customs. Now is our chance to help Emma when she needs it most.

SUMMARY:Noah Derksen with Dominique Adams
DESCRIPTION:Noah Derksen – Album Release Show – Friday\, March 31\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nCanadian Folk Music’s 2021Emerging Artist of the Year\,Noah Derksen is quickly becoming known as a songwriter’s songwriter. Hailing from the heart of the Canadian Prairies\, Noah has spent years honing his craft up\, down\, and across North America. With a rich and soulful voice\,Noah weaves poetry that sounds instantly familiar on first listen. He currently resides in the West Broadway neighbourhood of Winnipeg\, Manitoba. His new album Sanctity of Silence is out March 9th\, 2023 via Symphonic. \n“This album represents a snapshot in my life. These past few years have been dominated by love—in its beauty and its hardships. These nine songs present the story of love from start to finish\, from highway 17 in Northwestern Ontario to being devastatingly alone on my basement floor just two years later. The songs are ordered as I wrote and experienced them\, and each capture a specific moment along this fated arc of love. Recording this album was the best form of therapy I could have ever hoped for.” \nThis release is a follow up to Noah’s 2019 album America\, Dreaming. Produced by Murray Pulver and featuring artwork by another JUNO winner Roberta Landreth\, the album explores Noah’s identity as an American-citizen and how this has changed over time. The album earned him a 2021 Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year. Plus\, Noah’s got long\, flowing auburn hair and a twinkle in his eye. What’s not to love? \n-—- \nWinnipeg-based singer/songwriter Dominique Adams takes genres such as folk\, Americana and soul and weaves them together to create a fresh and eloquent sound. An accomplished songwriter\, vocalist and guitarist\, Dominique’s unique sound grew out of the folk\, jazz and choral scenes in Western Canada\, and her love of those communities shine through in her lilting vocals\, and skillful playing. Dominique has an affinity for life’s complexity and simple beauty\, which is effortlessly reflected within the contours of the songs she creates. With the release of her debut EP behind her\, Dominique emerges as an expressive new voice in Canadian music; one that offers a moment of warmth\, contemplation and hope that feels like exactly what you needed to hear.

SUMMARY:Field Guide
DESCRIPTION:Field Guide at the West End Cultural Centre – Sunday\, April 4\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n-—- \nField Guide (aka Dylan MacDonald) is a weaver of worlds. Built around his inviting voice and wrapped in warm textures\, his self-titled sophomore full-length builds his most engaging world yet.It lives in a place between darkness and hopefulness with unshakeable melodies at its heart.“Melody is what makes words fall out of my mouth. It’s disarming. When I find a melody that represents my internal world\, I drop my guard. I allow the words to appear out of thin air without judgement. A lot of these songs came to life that way. I wasn’t trying to make anything\, but the songs became a home for words that I wasn’t yet ready to write on the page\,”MacDonald says. The past few years haven’t allowed for much escape from our interior worlds. There’s been a lot to move through\, and many things can be true at once. This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection oft hose truths–loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new\, feeling joy in the melancholy\, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it. The album is also alive with the people and places that surrounded its creation. Vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain NationalPark in a wood stove-heated cabin during one ofManitoba’s coldest winters in years. Bass and drums were tracked at Break glass Studios in Montreal\, a room that already felt familiar from falling in love with the records of tour-mate Leif Vollebekk. Final over dubbing took place at Monarch Studios in Vancouver surrounded by trusted engineers and friends. And constant inspiration was found in his circle of Winnipeg creators working away on their own projects.Like The Big Pink house–Boy Golden\,Slow Spirit\,Roman Clarke\, Kris Ulrich and others dropped in on each other to share demos and often lend their sounds to each other’s albums. Beyond his hometown\, Field Guide has had the opportunity to meet some heroes and new friends. He’s supported Leif Vollebekk\, Bahamas\, SYML\, Wild Rivers\, JP Saxe andPenny & Sparrow on their tours this year. He’s built a legion of fans online and on the road. So\, while this is a solo album that invites the listener insideField Guide’s inner monologue world\, it really is meant to be lived in together.“These are the truest\, rawest songs that I’ve ever written. I’ve never felt so sure about something I’ve made before. And now\, it’s yours.”

SUMMARY:Mom Jeans WITH SPECIAL GUESTS BEARINGS
DESCRIPTION:MOM JEANS\nWITH SPECIAL GUESTS BEARINGS\n\n\nMOM JEANS\n \nWITH SPECIAL GUESTS BEARINGS\n \n \nDoor Time: 7:00 PM Show 8:00 PM\n \n18+ / NO MINORS\n \n \n8 Max Ticket Limit\n* Accounts that violate the posted ticket limit may be cancelled without notice. \n \n“Give me something sweet so I can make it through the week/Don’t care if I end up with cavities.”\n \n \nThis is the plea that opens Sweet Tooth\, the upcoming third LP from Berkeley’s Mom Jeans. It’s the introduction to a quasi-concept record\, a structural departure for the emo punk quartet. Before any of the record’s 13 songs had been written and recorded\, the band knew what Sweet Tooth would sound like: late ‘90s and early 2000s pop rock and pop punk bliss. For frontman Eric Butler\, that meant revisiting the guitar pop perfection of Weezer and Oasis alongside deep cuts from one-hit wonders like Third Eye Blind\, Fountains of Wayne\, and Superdrag.\n \n \nButler\, guitarist Bart Thompson\, bassist Samuel Kless\, and drummer Austin Carango all arrived at the same description for these sounds: ear candy.\n \n \n“Those hits by Blink-182 and Green Day\, all those bands\, it’s just hooks for days and really excellent songwriting\,” says Butler. “They really just tried to write incredible songs that would get stuck in people’s heads. We wanted to try our own version of that. Ear candy is the goal\, so Sweet Tooth is the record.”\n \n \nThe result of this expedition into the Golden Age of snotty pop punk and cheeky radio rock is a 13-track hit of musical ecstasy\, crammed with delicious guitar crunch and infectious melodics beneath boyish romance\, teen-to-young adult angst\, and gleeful abandon.\n \n \nSweet Tooth\, which arrives three years after Mom Jeans’ second LP Puppy Love\, was recorded in New Jersey at The Barber Shop Studios with producer Brett Romnes (The Front Bottoms\, Oso Oso\, Dogleg). Butler says it’s the first time the band had a proper\, top-to-bottom studio experience\, which meant no cutting corners\, and an ability to chase a previously-unattainable level of polish. Tyler Povanda (Save Face) and Kory Gregory (Prince Daddy & the Hyena) contributed vocals to the record.\n \n \nThe music on Sweet Tooth marked a departure for Butler from his usual writing style. “I fell in love with bands like Modern Baseball and Front Bottoms and Joyce Manor\, so I wanted to write songs like that\,” says Butler. “That’s what our first two records were: me trying to stay in that box\, cause I think that’s where I felt comfortable.”\n \n \nThe “ear candy” radio bands that inspired Sweet Tooth were never necessarily considered cool in the way Butler’s other influences were. “There’s almost a kind of disdain toward commercial success\,” says Butler. “I didn’t wanna think that I was a normie and maybe I’m not\, but parts of me definitely are. Parts of all of us in this band definitely are\, and we’re okay with that.”\n \n \nIt’s about being able to like something simply because you like it. “There’s certain aspects of not really giving a shit and not having so much self-awareness and not trying to be different and cool\, and just letting yourself trust your natural instincts\, that just feel good\,” says Butler.\n \n \nOpener “Something Sweet” announces this new worldview in a perfect pop punk flurry before first single “What’s Up?” rumbles in with drums and a Take Off Your Pants And Jacket-ish Tom Delonge riff and Butler’s best Mark Hoppus drone: “I’m such a fuck/I’m such a fucking piece of shit and you hate me for it!” It’s earworm chorus (complete with a choir of “Ooh la la la” behind it) tries to parse through why we feel like shit with so much going for us: “I should be happy/should be thankful for the friends I have around me\, the support of my fractured family/But still I’m just pretending that I’m fine when I’m feeling lousy all the time.”\n \n \nThe gleeful folk punk romp “Hippo In The Water” gives way to the sad-sack breakup pop of “White Trash Millionaire:” “If love makes you rich then I would rather be broke instead!” Butler and group vocals declare before a horn-laden outro. Follow-up “Circus Clown” is led by a breezy\, saccharine synth melody as Butler\, love-drunk\, does cartwheels for a crush: “If life’s a circus then I’m the biggest clown/I’ll trade my love for laughs and let you cut me down.”\n \n \n“Sugar Rush\,” “Graduating Life\,” and “LUV L8R” oscillate between swoopy-haired emo pop strummers and Warped Tour mosh-ready pop punk\, snapping the brain back to the best bits of Under The Cork Tree before the pure Blue Album waltz of “Crybaby (On the Phone).” “If you’re doing a concept album about radio hits\, you’re gonna do a Weezer-type situation\,” says Butler.\n \n \nThe closing trio of tracks ratchet down the BPM and dime the emotional punch. “I spent the last ten minutes inside my car\, tears streaming at the rear view/Looking back I was so stupid\, all I ever wanted was you\,” Butler mourns on the bawling-in-your-high-school-bedroom chorus of “Ten Minutes.” “Teeth” meanwhile flips the record’s sugary throughline on its side. The record flames out gloriously in harmonized group vocals\, bittersweet guitar leads\, and pulsing horns before Butler sings\, “You’ve got no teeth\, you were just talking sweet/You were everything to me but now you’re just cavities.”\n \n \nSweet Tooth feels like an eternal dessert-before-dinner\, a rejection of the idea that we need to suffer before we get to the good stuff. You’ve got one life. Indulge your Sweet Tooth.

DESCRIPTION:Sam Baardman at the West End Cultural Centre – Saturday\, April 22\, 2023 at 8:00pm\n\n\nThe West End Cultural Centre strongly encourages all of our patrons to continue wearing facemasks in our venue. Touring artists are disproportionately affected by COVID-related health issues\, and we want to give them every opportunity to continue to perform and tour. By wearing your mask in the venue\, you’re helping keep our artists healthy so that they don’t need to cancel shows and tours. \n—– \nSam Baardman is a well-known singer-songwriter and visual artist living in Winnipeg. His music reflects his searching and inquisitive spirit that expresses compelling truths about our deepest questions and our most difficult challenges. Fans of Sam appreciate his lyrical depth and superb\, singable melodies. It’s no surprise that the Winnipeg Free Press described him as “one of the city’s strongest and most literate songwriters.” \nFollowing the release of last year’s well-received comeback album\, Marsh Radio\, Sam returns with his fourth full-length recording\, Athabasca. The album will be available on all streaming platforms and will be for sale directly from his website. \nThe Athabasca project began in 2022 when Sam was exhibiting and performing at a conference in Winnipeg he helped host called “Art\, Activism and Advocacy”. There\, he spoke to a scientist in attendance from Global Water Futures (GWF)\, a program that supports research scientists who are studying the effects of climate change on water systems. GWF had collaborated with environmental artists in the past\, and with their support Sam spent two weeks last fall at the Coldwater Laboratory in the Rockies as well as northern Saskatchewan speaking with scientists about their climate-related work. Sam traveled with GWF scientists to their observatories atop mountains\, deep inside alpine forests\, up on a glacier\, and onto the northern prairies. \n“Spending time with these researchers was a life-changing experience.  It really opened my eyes and helped me to understand the science much more deeply\, but getting to know the scientists was just as important.  I discovered a group of extraordinarily dedicated people who are confronting the global environmental crisis head on\,” says Sam. “They are in a race against time\, in a battle against apathy and ignorance\, in a fight for resources\, and in a constant struggle to be heard by global leaders\, policy-makers\, legislators\, regulators\, and the general public.  We owe it to ourselves and to them to pay attention to what they are discovering\, and more importantly\, to act on it together.” \nThe result of this science-art collaboration is Athabasca\, a collection of environmental songs set to be released on April 22nd\, Earth Day\, at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. Environmentalism has been a theme in Sam’s music from his earliest days as a songwriter\, and this new album is a culmination of decades of focus on the ecological crisis. The music occupies a space that is neither didactic and preachy\, nor naively optimistic. There are celebratory songs about the beauty of nature\, but also songs that speak to our bewilderment\, hurt\, and anger at the dilemma we find ourselves in.
