IMPRESSIONS: Flatlanders Beer Festival

Being a non-beer drinker myself, I have to admit the Beer Festival was a really good time. With well over 100 different types of beer to taste, I had NO idea where to begin. So, I started off easy, with something I recognized, a Rickard’s White garnished with an orange. I’ve heard some good things about this beer, but I didn’t quite agree with what they had to say when it came down to tasting it myself. It didn’t taste all that great to me.

Actually, most beer didn’t taste all that great to me, only because I don’t like to drink beer personally, but I thought I might as well give it a shot. Other beers that I sampled included Red Stripe, a Jamaican lager, Stella Legere, Innis & Gunn, Hoegaarden, but the beer that took the cup for me was a very girly strawberry beer called Fruli Strawberry Beer. It tasted more like a cooler to me, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

Another beer that I enjoyed was a coffee flavored beer. The sampling of it included eating a Bernard Callebaut Chocolate Covered Coffee Bean, which made the beer taste so much smoother and brought out the flavor. It was a nice touch to the beer, but I’m not too sure about eating chocolate covered coffee beans everytime I had this beer.

Since I, myself, am not a big beer drinker, I had to rely on what people suggested to me. I also took their advice on beers i should avoid, including some of the organic beers which “tasted like cigarette butts.”

My friends told me that if I wasn’t a beer drinker at the beginning of the night, I would be by the end of the night. I don’t see that happening, but I did have a good time at the beer festival, and would go back next year.

I hope our winner, bjamesgali, had as much fun as I did.  If you weren’t able to check out the beer festival last night, or you didn’t sample all the beer you wanted to, you still have one more opportunity tonight!
