FRIDAY EATS: Kawaii Crepe

When I was little, my mom would make crepes almost every Sunday morning. I’d smother them in butter and brown sugar and after about 3 or 4 of them, I’d be bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day. Over time I was introduced to nutella, which I’d smother over my crepes with bananas or strawberries and felt as if I had been born again.

Kawaii Crepes makes me feel as if I’ve died and gone to crepe heaven. They offer their crepes in two categories, sweet and savory. The sweet menu offers tons of sugary creations that I wish I would have thought of when I was a kid, and the savory menu offers a wide variety of lunch crepes that have opened my eyes to a crepes full potential.

The savoury menu includes plenty of delicious options for a light lunch, like the Osborne Branch which is filled with grilled chicken, bacon, cheese and ranch dressing, the Kawaiian which offers an abundance of ham, pineapple and mozzarella, and The Captain, stuffed with shrimp and scallops in a white wine cream sauce and herbs. They also have a wide variety of vegetarian options like the In a Vegetated Crepe, the Chickplease and the Tofu Dill-Lite, all of which were just as tasty as their meaty competition.

For the basic dessert lover you have the classic Fruitella, which is nutella with strawberries or bananas, or the And Everything Nice and the Divine Brown, which are different renditions of my personal childhood favourite, butter and brown sugar. For someone with a major sweet tooth, you can get the Sweet Tooth, which is a crepe packed with ice cream, nutella, whipped cream, strawberries and chocolate syrup, or the It’s-a-Smore, which is one giant smore crumbled in a crepe. It’s intimidating, but delicious.

If none of these sweet or savory crepes appeal to you, never fear. There is the make your own crepe option available for you to create whatever your little heart desires. There is also a select children’s menu for kids 8 years and younger for a kid size portion. Kawaii Crepe also offers a wide variety of bubble and Fusion teas and organic fair trade coffees. My only complaint with the restaurant is with the fusion teas. I had a peach flavoured fusion tea and it tasted more like perfume then a tea. It may have just been the peach flavour I chose, but it was enough to turn me off the fusion teas all together.

Whether you are looking to dine in their retro themed, comfortable restaurant or take a crepe to go, they do not disappoint.
