Now that the ride sharing legislation has passed, Uber and Lyft is expected to operate in Winnipeg beginning March 1, 2018.

Uber and Lyft drivers will have to undergo the same criminal background checks as taxi drivers. They also need to have similar vehicle-safety certifications but they will not have to install shields.

They also won’t be allowed to pick up passengers who hail them down on the street or accept cash as a payment, these customers are still reserved for Taxis.

Vehicle-for-hire companies will be also be charged a surcharge if less than 10 per cent of their vehicles is accessible. This is to ensure there are enough accessible vehicles in Winnipeg.

What are your thoughts?

Will you be taking Uber/Lyft or sticking to traditional Taxis?

  • Uber/Lyft (83%)
  • Taxis (10%)
  • Winnipeg Transit (7%)
