The City of Winnipeg will be filling their Summer 2024 positions differently this year. They will be shifting away from posting summer jobs online. Instead, they will be interviewing people right on the spot at three hiring halls.

The hiring halls will take place from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on:

What Jobs Are Available at the Hiring Halls?

They’ll be interviewing for three positions: labourer, student labourer, and gardener.

What is a City of Winnipeg Labourer?

Salary per hour: Labourer 2 – $21.55

Duties include:

  • Performing physically demanding work such as mowing, shoveling, trimming, weeding, cleaning, watering, cultivating
  • Preparing and cleaning up worksites
  • Assisting with traffic control
  • Repairing sidewalks (concrete, asphalt and gravel maintenance)
  • Assisting with vegetation control
  • Planting and maintaining decorative gardens and roadside planters
  • Collecting litter

Labourers are responsible for operating, cleaning, and maintaining various tools and equipment, completing written and/or electronic reports, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and following established safe work practices, operational policies, and procedures. Applicant education and qualifications should include: a Grade 10 education or equivalent, previous landscaping or construction experience, comfort with using various hand and power tools, ability to deal appropriately with coworkers and the general public and strong written and oral communication skills.

Please note that the anticipated duration of employment is from April – October for the 2024 season. Start dates are anticipated to change due to weather and/or operational requirements.

What is a City of Winnipeg Gardener?

Salary per hour: Gardener 1 – $24.70

Duties include:

  • Planning floral arrangements and displays (designing, budgeting, keeping records, determining materials requirements)
  • Planting and caring for a variety of plants and landscaping (weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing beds with hand tools and power tools, planting flowerbeds and planters)

Gardeners are responsible for operating, cleaning, and maintaining various tools, vehicles and equipment, completing reports, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and following established safe work practices, operational policies, and procedures.

Applicant education and qualification should include: a Grade 12 education or equivalent. Post-secondary education, training and/or courses in Horticulture is preferred as well as general knowledge of horticultural practices and commonly used landscape plants and shrubs. Applicants must be able to work well with both coworkers and the general public, and communicate well both orally and in writing.


What is a City of Winnipeg Student Labourer?

Salary per hour: Student – $15.69

Duties include:

  • Assisting with traffic control
  • Preparing and cleaning up worksites
  • Grounds maintenance (including shoveling and painting)
  • Basic landscaping and lawn care
  • Assist with vegetation control
  • Assisting with city beautification including planting, maintaining floral bed and watering

Student labourers are responsible for operating, cleaning, and maintaining various hand and power tools, and should have some previous experience with landscaping, grounds maintenance, or construction. Applicants must be able to work well with others, deal appropriately with both coworkers and the general public, and communicate well both orally and in writing.

Please note: most summer students will be required from May through August, with May 1 being the earliest possible start date and September 15 being the latest release date. Successful candidates must be available to start work on short notice and must also intend to return to school at the end of the season. Candidates must be at least 16 years old.
