WestJet has always stood out from the competition by offering its first checked baggage free. But beginning October 29, 2014, they will charge a $25 fee for a first checked bag on Econo fares for travel within Canada and between Canada and the U.S.
The new fee will only apply to bookings made after September 15, for travel on or after October 29, 2014. So anyone with an existing booking for travel after October 29 will still get a free checked baggage.
Guests flying to international destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe will continue to get a first checked baggage at no charge.
For frequent travellers, WestJet has launched a new WestJet Rewards tiers program featuring three levels – Teal, Silver and Gold.
Guests who qualify for the Silver tier (at least $4000 12-month qualifying flight spend) will be able to check a first bag at no cost. Guests who qualify for the Gold tier (at least $6000 12-month qualifying flight spend) will get two free checked bags.
Also, to ease the bad news, WestJet has introduced a Price Drop Guarantee on ALL WestJet flights. Previously, this was only available on Vacation packages. Price Drop claims are eligible up to two hours before departure! Visit http://www.westjet.com/guest/en/price-drop-guarantee.shtml for more information.
Having to pay for a checked baggage is definitely bad news, but the price guarantee is definitely a welcomed addition!
