Premier Gary Doer has announced that the province will be sending $100,000 in support of the relief efforts in the Philippines.

Tropical Storm Ketsana (which was recently upgraded to a Typhoon) hit the Philippines hard over the weekend. At one point Manila, the Country’s capital with a population of 15-million, was 80% covered in water. The flooding affected everyone from the poor, to the rich celebrities.

The Philippines documented a record-high amount of of rainfall in 24 hours at 45.5 centimetres (17.9 in). More than a months worth of rain fell in just 12-hours. The death toll is currently at 246 people with many still missing.

Manitobans are urged to help by contributing to agencies like the Red Cross, Plan International Canada, Hope International and various church organizations.
