Starting April 1, 2010, consumers will no longer have to pay the 2 cent levy on all beverage containers (excluding dairy) sold in Manitoba.

The 2 cent charge has been in effect since 1995 but since then the popularity of recycling has outgrown the program. More and more Manitobans are recycling and a 2-cent charge per product can no longer handle the costs it takes to recycle.

The Pollution Prevention for Manitoba Conservation will be taking a new approach on collection revenue for recycling programs and plans to place the fees on producers instead of consumers. Unfortunately, we may see prices go up on the products themselves in the near future.
