By the end of 2012, all Winnipeg Transit Buses will have new automated fare collection boxes on board. These digital collection buses will count your change, read smart cards, and spit out transfer slips.
The new technology will replace boxes that are as old as the 1930’s. The Cleveland fare box has been out of production since the 1960’s. Winnipeg Transit has been waiting for fare-collection technology to mature before making the change over. The $15-million upgrade is expected to begin in 2012. You should start seeing the new boxes mid next year.
