3,400 Winnipeggers showed their national pride Canada Day by standing shoulder to shoulder to form Canada’s biggest-ever Living Flag this morning in front of the Legislature, despite the rain.
The Downtown BIZ had challenged Winnipeggers to come out and beat Victoria’s record of about 2,100 people in 2010. While Victoria’s final tally for their July 1, Winnipeg’s event organizers are ecstatic about the participation.
“We were hoping for just over 2,000 people, and when the line started forming before 9am, we knew this event had really captured Winnipeggers’ imaginations,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ executive director. “No matter how many people Victoria gets today, we know today we beat their previous record. I have to say, when everyone started singing O Canada together I had a shiver down my spine. It was amazing.”
