U.S. hardware chain, Lowes, is looking to open up shop in Winnipeg and give Home Depot and RONA a run for their money. They have submitted a plan to city hall to build a store west of IKEA as part of the Seasons of Tuxedo development.
The news comes after Lowes failed to buy-out Canadian hardware chain RONA. The move to open retail shops in large markets could be a tactic to put pressure on RONA to accept a second offer when it comes. Opening a Lowes in Canada would definitely drive prices down for consumers – but unfortunate it means another U.S. chain is taking our hard earned Canadian dollars. [CTV WINNIPEG]
