The City is set to approve a $21-million, seven-year photo radar contract to keep Photo Radar on Winnipeg streets – but some are against it.
Coun. Scott Fielding believes its a huge tax grab and the money is better served hiring 57 more Winnipeg police traffic officers to perform manual radar. If approved, ACS Public Sector Solutions will supply and operate digital photo enforcement in Winnipeg, from Jan. 1, 2013 until May 31, 2020.
According to a police survey, 83% of the public approve of photo radar. There are currently 50 Winnipeg intersections set up for red-light cameras – but only 31 actual cameras rotating through them. There are also 10 mobile units that rotate throughout the city. [WINNIPEG SUN]
