Apple has officially unveiled more details on CarPlay. Formerly called iOS in the Car, the in-car iPhone and iPad integration system will bring iOS’s interface into dashboards all over the country.

CarPlay lets drivers access their iPhone/iPad content and maps from the builtin entertainment system. Makers that have all pledge to include CarPlay are: Ferrari, Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota.

CarPlay uses Siri to make calls, listen to voice mail and hear incoming alerts and messages. Integration with maps allows turn-by-turn directions. CarPlay also supports iTunes radio, podcasts and certain third-party apps including Spotify and iHeartRadio for all your music needs.

It will start showing up in vehicles later this year and requires iOS 7 and an iPhone, iPad or iPad Mini with a Lightning connector.

Now that Apple has struck first blood with the car industry… we can assume that Google/Android will follow shortly.

The video above demonstrates how it will integrate with Volvo’s line of CarPlay vehicles.
