Former NBA star, Shaquille O’Neal, is looking to get back into the video game scene. His Shaq Fu fighting game was released on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo on October 28, 1994. Now, 20 years later, he wants to release a sequel: Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn.
Big Deez Productions has started a crowd funding campaign and is looking to raise $450,000 for development and production. It’s using a Flexible Funding campaign which means it will receive all funds raised even if it does not reach its goal. The funding duration is from March 06, 2014 – April 20, 2014. The campaign is for a digital copy of base game on PC (retail price planned at $29.99). Other video game platforms will be included if they can reach their stretch goals.
Shaq himself is heavily involved in the project. $450,000 is pocket change to the retired NBA star, who can most likely fund the project himself. This crowd funding campaign is being used to generate a buzz and its almost a guarantee that we’ll see this game on platforms even if the funds aren’t raised. 5% of all profits from the game go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America!
Shaq Fu was dubbed one of the worst games of all time… so why would they want to do it again? The developers say that its going to be a brand new game all together. There are two, and only two, similarities between the new Shaq Fu, and the abomination that was born in the nineties: The name, and the starring character.
Here are the stretch goals for the campaign:
- $500,000 – We add a challenge mode!
- $550,000 – Two additional levels and an additional playable character!
- $650,000 – iOS and Android feel the thrill of Shaq Fu!
- $775,000 – Shaq Fu gets the Xbox and PS3 treatment!
- $960,000 – Shaq in your pocket with PS Vita and 3DS versions!
- $1,080,000 – Nintendo lovers get the action on Wii U!
- $1,620,000 – Shaq goes turbo on XBOX One and PS4 Platforms!
The minimum contribution is $15, which gets you a digital copy of the game for PC, and if the mobile stretch goal is reached, you’ll get a mobile version as well. The premium contribution is $35,000, which gets you everything plus you get to bring two friends to the TNT studios for a meet and greet, watch a live taping of NBA on TNT, and have lunch with Shaq.
