Winnipeg’s only pure Hip-Hop, Dance and R&B radio station, Streetz 104.7, announced on their Facebook Page on Wednesday that after 1,579 days on air, they are pulling the plug.
A reason wasn’t given for the stations cancellation but fans are told to listen in on Monday to ‘see what happens’. Native Communications Incorporated (NCI), who owns the station, will most likely be doing a re-brand.
In 2008, NCI was granted one of the last FM licenses available in the city. The focus of the station was Hip-Hop, Dance, R&B with a 40 per cent commitment to aboriginal content.
Currently, if you tune in to 104.7 FM, you’ll hear classical tracks that are far from what you’d be used to hearing on the station. Listeners are also periodically reminded to tune in on Monday when a new station is set to launch.
Streetz 104.7’s target audience was youth aged between 18-34. Coverage reached the outskirts of city limits with its 3,000 watt transmitter located in downtown Winnipeg.
