New Rock Station Hits Winnipeg Air Waves

97.5 BIG FM has officially launched into Winnipeg air waves and will replace Power 97 FM.

They specialize in “Big Hits and Real Classic Rock”.

The radio station is owned and operated by Corus Entertainment. Corus also runs 99.1 Fresh FM and 680 CJOB, the number one radio station in Winnipeg. CJOB currently owns a 12.0 per cent share of Winnipeg listeners. CBC Radio is right behind them with a 11.7 per cent share.

Power 97 drop to a 4.2 per cent share last year which forced the station to make some big changes.

Corus Radio Winnipeg General Manager Scott Armstrong says “These are big songs from the last 40 years and some real classic rock songs that haven’t been heard in the market for a long time.”

“It’s kind of like set it and forget it. From the Rolling Stones to Peter Gabriel to Bruce Springsteen,” he says. “These are a lot of artists that haven’t been heard in Winnipeg for a long time so I think it’s going to be really refreshing for folks.”

As with all radio stations that first start up, they’ll have three straight days of commercial free music over the weekend.

Once launched, the morning show will be ran by Jay Richardson and Jolene Lebsack.
