A change is being made to improve bicycle safety at dedicated Sunday/Holiday bicycle routes.
There are four streets in Winnipeg that are designated as Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Routes:
- Wellington Crescent
- Wolseley Avenue
- Lyndale Drive
- Scotia Street
These routes give cyclists an opportunity to use the roadway with limited vehicle traffic. Previously, vehicle traffic was discouraged but not prohibited on these streets at the posted times. Motorist could legally drive on these routes (if they could get pass the barricades)
Beginning in 2015, that will all change.
Motor vehicle travel on the Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Route is now limited to a distance of no more than one block from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Signs will be posted on all approach roadways to advise motorists they are entering a Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Route.
Barricades will no longer be placed along the roadway.
A violation of the Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Route by-law will result in a $185 fine.
