The province has paved the way to introduce harsher penalties for anyone caught using their cellphone while driving.

The new bill will allow police to issue a 3 day licence suspension for first time offenders. A 7 day suspension will be issued for the second time.

When caught, drivers will be issue temporary license to get their vehicle home and then the suspension will kick in. Traffic ticket experts argue that by issuing an immediate suspension, the Province is automatically assuming a driver is guilty and doesn’t give the driver a chance to fight it in court.

The current penalty for cellphone use is five demerits and a $204 ticket.
